(Gibson) In an interview with Examiner.com last week, Al Jardine let slip news that pop fans have been waiting to hear for over four decades. According to the guitarist, Capitol Records is planning to release The Beach Boys' lost masterpiece, Smile, this summer. The album, which was intended to be the follow-up to the group's magnum opus, Pet Sounds, was scuttled in late 1966 for a variety of reasons and has never been released to the public in its entirety. In 2004, Brian Wilson rerecorded the material as Brian Wilson Presents Smile, winning three Grammy nominations for his efforts. But until now, The Beach Boys' version has remained on the shelf. Jardine, though, says that is all about to change. "Capitol Records plans to issue a Beach Boys version of Smile sometime this summer to begin the celebration of The Beach Boys' anniversary," he said. "Smile is the Holy Grail for Beach Boys' fans, so it will be good." more on this story

(Gibson) Comb the annals of Jimmy Page interviews and you'll find that the notoriously elusive Led Zeppelin guitarist has a pretty cool take on the world. The 67-year-old first picked up a guitar at age 12 and has been at work on it ever since, playing high-profile session work for The Who, The Kinks and Van Morrison, among others, before joining the seminal London group, The Yardbirds.Of course, Page's biggest imprint was made in Led Zeppelin from 1968 to 1980. Equipped with Gibsons, ranging from the Les Paul Standard to the Doubleneck EDS-1275 to the J-200, Page picked, strummed and shredded his way into the ranks of the world's best and most influential guitarists. Led Zeppelin's supernatural chemistry ended abruptly when, traumatized by the death of drummer John Bonham, the band disbanded more than 30 years ago. But that hasn't stopped Page from continuing on with his music or prevented Led Zeppelin fans from holding out hope for a legitimate reunion. What does Page have to say about the chances of that? Read on for his take on a Led Zeppelin reunion and other insights here

Today Shon Sullivan a.k.a. Goldenboy tells us about "Holiday" from his brand new album "Sleepwalker" which hit's stores today! (Crowded House fans take note) Here is the story:A few years ago I had the wonderful opportunity to go to New Zealand and record with Neil Finn and the band for his "One All" album. In the guest house where we were staying was a Tascam 8 track reel to reel recorder along with a Wurlitzer piano. One evening I hooked them both up and started recording this little piano riff on the 8 track. While I was doing this, Sebastian Steinberg, who played bass on the album and was staying in the room next to me, came in and said "Ah yes." We talked about how it was like we were on music holiday. We also talked about how New Zealand had this kind of dark and foreboding feeling about it. That feeling was further enforced when the following weekend we all stayed out at Piha beach. Stuffed in wetsuits two sizes too small we headed out into the water. Piha has black sand from all the volcanic rock surrounding it and the waves are absolutely treacherous. Our wetsuits were so tight that we couldn't swim properly and we almost drowned! Although I'd brought that 8 track reel of tape that I'd been recording ideas on back home with me , I didn't have anything to play it on. Years later when Jon Crawford and I were recording at his studio, Interstellar, someone came in and wanted to trade him an old Tascam recorder for some studio time. It seemed like a good trade but there was no way of knowing if this machine even worked because nobody even sells those reel to reel tapes any more. Then I remembered the one I'd brought back with me from New Zealand and had never been able to play! We put it on and this little Wurlitzer piano riff that I'd completely forgotten about came out of the speakers. Inspired, we just kept adding on parts until it was complete. Hearing is believing. Now that you know the story behind the song, listen for yourself right here!

(hennemusic) Matt Warnock at Guitar International hooked up with Sammy Hagar to learn about how the recording of the new Chickenfoot album is going. Sammy Hagar: We started last Saturdayit's a week today. Seven days and you ain't gonna believe it, but we've got eleven songs. It isn't like we wrote the songs previously, rehearsed them and then went in and just tried to cut 'em. We're writing in the studio on the spot. Joe presents us with some musical ideas, and his ideas are really together, it isn't this vague idea. He presents you with an intro, a verse, a chorus, a bridge, a solo and an ending. Then we jam to it. I see if it feels melodically in my repertoire of blues licks that I have in my voice. [Laughs] Then I come up with a good melody and structure, and we work on the arrangement until we all agree. Then my job is to come up with a title before we're done rehearsing the song. Last but not least, I go out and write the lyrics. Believe it or not, I've already written lyrics for five of the songs on the new record. Then we get a take that sounds good and we continue the process. I can't believe how fast things are going with this record. It's amazing. A lot more here

Gibson continues their weeklong countdown of the greatest guitar riffs in music history. Today they lay out 40-31. Here are just a couple: 36. "Panama," Van Halen (1984): The world knows Eddie Van Halen can ignite a fretboard with his preternatural pyrotechnics. But what really makes him one of if not the greatest axemen in the solar system, what separates him from the pack, is his wonderful ear for the monster and always tasty riff. "Panama," the third single from Van Halen's epic 1984 album, is a heavy-duty and immensely catchy riff that harkens back to some of the finer work of his first two albums. Not terribly intricate, certainly not by Edward's standard, but the riff makes the song. Sean Patrick Dooley 35. "Rock and Roll," Led Zeppelin (1971): This showstopper on Led Zeppelin IV was born during a 1971 jam session in which the band aimed to polish off their song "Four Sticks." Instead, Jimmy Page came up with this magical intro guitar riff and the band dropped what they were doing to write "Rock and Roll." "The riff and the sequence was really immediate to those 12-bar patterns that you had in those old rock songs like Little Richard," Page told The Times last year. "It was just so spur-of-the-moment the way that it just came together more or less out of nowhere." Ellen Barnes The rest of today's list

(Gibson) At just after 11:30 p.m. on this day in 1990, rock and roll innovator Del Shannon was found dead, slumped in a rocking chair in the den of his new Santa Clarita Valley home. A .22-caliber rifle was found next to Shannon's body. It looked like suicide to Deputy Bill Linnemeyer of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.Shannon's manager Dan Bourgoise, said the singer had been depressed lately, that he was concerned about his new home and had been suffering form the flu for several weeks. At the same time, Del Shannon's career was on the up after a decade-long slump. He'd been working with Tom Petty and Jeff Lynne and was rumored to be replacing Roy Orbison, who had died, in the Traveling Wilburys supergroup. Gibson has selected 10 noteworthy tribute bands to singled out. Here are just a couple that caught our eye because of their decision to blend two band's music together: Gabba (ABBA, The Ramones): Upon forming in 1996, this London-based tribute band immediately set about melding ABBA's dance-pop style with the punk-rock sound of The Ramones, thus giving birth to "disco-punk." The group has been featured in Mojo, Melody Maker, New Musical Express and other high-profile rock publications. Among the outlandish claims listed on their website is the "fact" that a musical based on their songs titled Papa Mao Mao was staged on Broadway. Beatallica (The Beatles, Metallica): This Beatles-Metallica mashup group got its start as a one-off project at Milwaukee's annual Spoof-Fest in 2001. Encouraged by stellar reviews, the group decided to forge on with its novel strategy of performing Beatles songs and melodies in the metal-riff style of Metallic. The song titles "The Thing That Should Not Let it Be," "And Justice for All My Loving" say it all. Beatallica have opened shows for the likes of Dream Theater, Motorhead and L.A. Guns. The members of Metallica are said to be huge fans. more on this story

(Gibson) The rock world lost one of its great performers on Sunday with the passing of guitar legend Gary Moore. Moore died while on vacation in the town of Estepona in the Costa del Sol region of southern Spain. He was 58 years old.Born in Belfast, Northern Ireland, Moore first made his mark in the hard rock band, Skid Row (not to be confused with the later band). Inspired by the fiery blues playing of Albert King, Jimi Hendrix and Peter Green (who took Moore under his wing when the young Irishman was breaking in), Moore combined the feel and subtlety of the finest blues players with the speed and intensity of hard rock's heaviest hitters. Moore followed Skid Row with an on-again-off-again romance with Thin Lizzy. His friendship with Phil Lynott and Brian Downey stretched back to his school days, and he would play with Ireland's favorite band off and on for nine years, contributing to some of the group's best-loved songs, including "Still in Love with You," "Sarah" and "Waiting for an Alibi." He also recorded three albums with the jazz-fusion band Colosseum II during the same period. more on this story
