(Gibson) Megadeth's Dave Mustaine has formed a new band with ex-Anthrax guitarist Dan Spitz. The band, reported to be called Red Lamb, has risen from the ashes of Spitz's previous project, Deuxmonkey, which was shelved after vocalist Wade Black quit in April and issued a cease and desist on all of his lyrics and vocals. The Red Lamb album will be mixed by Johnny K, who is also producing the next Megadeth album after producer Andy Sneap had to drop out due to a scheduling conflict with his own band, Hell. Mustaine had already been involved in Deuxmonkey has far back as last year. In November 2010, he told this writer (in an unpublished segment of an interview for Mixdown magazine): "I've been working with Danny Spitz on his project and I was trying to sing a melody to him over the phone and I grabbed a guitar to play it, because with the increments of the frets it's a lot easier than when you're singing, when you're helping someone zero in on a melody over the phone." more on this story

(hennemusic) AC/DC are one of the last bands standing… Standing firm that their songs will never be available for download, that is. "I know The Beatles have changed, but we're going to carry on like that," AC/DC guitarist Angus Young told Sky News Friday at the London premiere of the band's new DVD, "Live At River Plate." "For us, it's the best way. We are a band who started off with albums and that's how we've always been." Experts say the rockers, whose 1980 album "Back In Black" is the second-highest selling in history, are missing out on millions in lost revenue by refusing to allow their work to be sold in the digital marketplace. Young said he refuses to sanction allowing individual tracks to be downloaded because their songs should be heard as part of a full album. more on this story

"No (reunion). That's just one of those things that are never going to happen. If you don't see somebody for a while, there's the old thing, 'Absence makes the heart grow fonder.' Well, we haven't had absence," Corgan tells Rolling Stone. "The things that have happened between us in the interim haven't been good. There have been lawsuits and lots of stupid stuff. It's only made it worse. If it was bad before, it's really bad now. Jimmy and I aren't enemies – he's just off doing what he wants to do, as he should. Here is the story:This song was written in five minutes on a piano in my front room. Originally, I didn't care for the song and thought it was a throw away, but my band mates convinced me otherwise. (Gibson) Perhaps the most celebrated album of Rush's long, illustrious career is 1981's Moving Pictures. Featuring two of the band's top singles, "Tom Sawyer" and "Limelight," along with other favorites, such as "Red Barchetta" and the instrumental "YYZ," the album helped cement the group's status as an upper echelon arena act. The group have spotlighted the album on their Time Machine tour, playing it in its entirety to houses packed with multiple generations of Rush fans. And with a newly issued special edition Blu-ray/DVD+CD package, it seems like the perfect time to check in with Rush guitarist Alex Lifeson to look back on the set."We knew they were good songs," Lifeson told MusicRadar.com, who asked the Gibson signature guitarist to reflect on the record track-by-track (highlights below). "Did we think that they'd ever be considered 'standards'? Not at all. All we tried to do was please ourselves." "Tom Sawyer": "We don't like to think about the album sequence until we're done recording everything, but I think 'Tom' was always going to be the opener. Just the way it starts – it had to open the record." "Red Barchetta": "I remember that we really loved this song, and so the writing of it was very quick. It was born from a jam, which is how a lot of the stuff on Moving Pictures came about. We'd go into the studio in the morning, jam on an idea, and then huddle around a little cassette player to see if we had something." The rest of the songs

(Gibson) The man who was most famous for playing the piccolo trumpet solo on The Beatles' "Penny Lane" has died, according to the Los Angeles Times. Classical musician David Mason passed away on April 29 after a brief battle with leukemia. He was 85.The story goes that Paul McCartney was seeking to add some extra instrumentation to "Penny Lane" and he saw Mason play Bach's "Brandenburg" Concerto No. 2 in F Major on television. The next day, producer George Martin brought in Mason to record with the band. "I did not even know who The Beatles were when I was asked to do a recording session with them," Mason told England's Bath Chronicle in 2003. "For me it was just another job." Mason brought nine trumpets to the session and eventually picked the B-flat piccolo trumpet to deliver the distinct solo. McCartney sang the solo aloud, Martin wrote out the notes and Mason performed his task, according to The Beatles Recording Sessions. He was paid about $45 for his contribution. more on this story

(Gibson) The Bobby Fuller Four may have sung "I Fought the Law," but when the law comes down on criminals, judges prefer to quote the lyrics of another bard. According to the LA Times, legal experts have determined that no artist has been quoted more in courtrooms than Bob Dylan.U.S. District Judge Robert Lasnik recalled hearing Dylan sing about injustice over the radio airwaves when he was growing up in New York City. "Suddenly there was someone speaking a certain kind of truth to you," he said. "You'd say, 'Wow! That's something I'm not used to hearing on the radio, something that moved me.'" University of Texas law professor Alex Long agreed that the influence of Dylan is prevalent on Baby Boomer-era judges. "Everyone wants to believe that the music they listen to says something about who they are," he opined. "Being a judge is a pretty cloistered existence, having to crank out these opinions in isolation. Dylan was popular at the time they were coming of age and trying to figure out who they were. The chance to throw in a line from your favorite artist is tempting, a chance to let your freak flag fly." more on this story

The ten-track album was recorded in 2010 with core band members: Joel Hamilton (producer/engineer BlakRoc, Sparklehorse), Matthias Bossi (Skeleton Key, Sleepytime Gorilla Museum), Carla Kihlstedt (Tin Hat, Sleepytime Gorilla Museum) and Tony Maimone (Pere Ubu, Frank Black, Bob Mould). An impressive array of guest musicians took part including Blixa Bargeld ("Drosophila Melanogaster"), Mike Watt ("Yeager's Approach"), Mike Patton ("Planemo") and Patton's former Mr. Bungle cohort/current Secret Chiefs 3 ringleader Trey Spruance ("Obituary For The Future"). Where the previous release, Traineater, focused on the American rust belt and The Book of Knots' self-titled debut explored all things nautical, Garden of Fainting Stars tackles the final frontier: space. In the band's own words: "The imagined utopias that await doomed travelers and early astronauts at the other end of their fantastical journeys inevitably give way to the grim realization which mankind has faced again and again: At every hopeful turn, commonplace realities await us. A vast and empty universe stretching far beyond infinity, capable of containing the countless imaginary creatures, civilizations and otherwise terrestrial impossibilities that inhabit our dreams, dies in the fluorescent lighting of the laundry soap aisle at Walmart. Once again, we cast a wormless, rusty hook into the lifeless seas of the music industry, expecting to reap only sorrow." more on this story
