Day in Rock Report for 05/06/2011
(Gibson) After months of rumors that Stone Sour/Slipknot singer Corey Taylor was going to be christened as the next Velvet Revolver vocalist, followed by that not happening, Velvet Revolver guitarist Slash admitted in a new interview that he was the main reason Taylor didn't get the gig.Slash explained that Taylor did meet with the group, but it just didn't click, reports Blabbermouth.net: "All we were doing was just rehearsing with him and trying him out auditioning him ... he did come in and do all that. It just didn't seem to fit right to me. And he's great, and I love Corey, but it didn't seem like the answer to the Velvet Revolver problem." Adding to the drama, during a co-hosting stint on the May 4 edition of Canada's Louder radio show, Taylor was asked for his thoughts on Slash's comments. "We got together and we jammed some stuff and I guess it just wasn't working for him, which
He's Slash and he's entitled to have that, and I'm not gonna argue with him," Taylor said. "But it was cool to just be able to get together and jam with those guys and I made some really cool friends. Me and Duff [McKagan, Velvet Revolver bassist] are really close. It's one more thing I can say I did." more on this story

Some have complained that Def Leppard have become softer over the years. If you are one of those fans, you're not going to like this. On the other hand, if you have kids.... Here's the official word: Dreamin' With Def Leppard, the first installment of the "Rock the Cradle" series will be released on June 28th, 2011. "The Rock The Cradle" series features lullaby renditions of popular songs from legendary rock groups, and is the only lullaby series that series that features full band production & original members of the band. Dreamin' With Def Leppard is no exception, as it features Def Leppard guitarists Phil Collen & Vivian Campbell, performing 12 of the bands biggest hits. And, contrary to the usual simple keyboard & xylophone production, each track features a complete band production. Def Leppard's biggest hits are melodic at their core, and for the Leppard "lullification" process, we wrapped those great melodies with a warm blanket. more on this story

(Rock AAA) Wildhearts mainman Ginger has revealed that he quit rock supergroup the Brides of Destruction after founder Tracii Guns backed out of a series of agreements, chucked away the concept for the album and made the band something he didn't want to be a part of.Ginger says he was excited about the prospect of working with Guns before his supergroup dream turned sour when he realised he wouldn't have any input into the song writing. "I just realised the idea of the band that we all had, wasn't the idea of the band that was going to record the album.," he tells RockAAA. "The album was meant to be called '13 Acres' because we lived on this crazy ranch that Charles Manson's disciples had moved into before they moved to the Topanga Canyon one. This place was just steeped in history and it was 13 acres and it was all f**king spooky. "But it turns out the album is going to be called 'Runaway Brides.' I thought that was daft as we had such a really cool concept with this dark album and songs about life. more on this story

(Gibson) Duff McKagan has led a colorful life, playing integral roles in Guns N' Roses, Velvet Revolver and now his own band, Loaded. But there has been a dark side, as well: a long-term battle with addiction that McKagan has chronicled in his new autobiography, It's So Easy and Other Lies.McKagan told New Jersey's WDHA-FM radio (as reported on Music-News.com), "You get a cross-section of my life. I almost lost a battle to addiction and I kind of had to relive it, but in a conversation where you understand what's going on in my life. I could tell you how much I drank or how many drugs I took in a day, but a normal person would just not understand that. I don't even know if the book was even any good. It sounds lame, but it was just so many damn words and endless hours of writing." Even with the autobiography out of the way, McKagan says he still has a lot of things to check off on his bucket list. "You know there's a hundred things I could think of I have left to do, but it's been great so far," he said. "I've never really sat there and thought about it; about what I've done so far, and how does it feel. I probably should do that one day, but it's not happening yet. Probably a good sign." more on this story

Today we celebrate Mother's Day this coming Sunday with Scarlett Cherry who tells us about "Angel" from her brand new album "Labor of Love". Here is the story:Initially, our concept for Labor Of Love was to write songs that were love letters from Mothers to their babies...to explore and relate the beauty and power of Mother's love. Angel was written with my dear friend, collaborator, and producer, Alisan Porter. in her words.." Angel is a love affair of melody and spirit. it came from a random voice note on my iPhone. I was inspired by the idea of how much love you could have for something, before you ever meet it." Together with Eli Rise, and my husband, Lee Cherry..we discussed the feelings associated with first time Motherhood, and the gorgeous anticipation of our little "Angel". We were writing and recording Labor Of Love during my last trimester. Pregnancy fueled my love and passion for this piece. That coupled with the enormous capacity of pure love in the writing process...gave this song Wings. Hearing is believing. Now that you know the story behind the song, listen for yourself and learn more about the album right here!

On this day in 2002, American songwriter and producer Otis Blackwell died from a heart attack. He wrote the classic songs "All Shook Up," "Return to Sender," "Don't Be Cruel," "Great Balls Of Fire" and "Fever." Over the years, Blackwell's songs have sold more than 185 million copies. Gibson takes a look back: Although he might not be as well known as Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Willie Dixon or Buddy Holly, Otis Blackwell should be considered alongside those greats as one of the architects of rock and roll. A remarkably talented songwriter, Blackwell penned many of the songs that shaped rock music including "Don't Be Cruel," "Fever," "All Shook Up" and "Great Balls of Fire." Blackwell died on this day in 2002, but his songs will live on forever.Otis was born in 1932 in Brooklyn, New York and grew up playing piano and listening to R&B and country tunes on the radio. "When I was young, I just sat down and started playing Chopsticks at the piano," Blackwell later remembered. "I got so far and then lost interest. Eventually, I regained it and started writing songs." At the age of 20, he won the famous "Amateur Night" contest at New York City's Apollo Theater. As a result, he landed a record contract, first with RCA and then Jay-Dee. His first single was a song he wrote, "Daddy Rolling Stone," which went on to become pretty popular in Jamaica, where it was covered by Derek Martin. A decade later, it would become a regular selection in The Who's early performances. more on this story
