(Gibson) Although Linkin Park are set to begin their first North American tour on Thursday (January 20) in Sunrise, Florida, lead singer Chester Bennington says he's not as prepared for this trek as others in the past. The frontman says that he's been hindered by some "stupid" injuries.

"I tore a ligament in my left hand last year, playing basketball at Chuck E. Cheese, which is like a pizza place for kids," he said. "I injured my back a few years ago, that's been acting up. The last show in Australia, I bent over to pack my bags and I tore a little bit of my back again."

But the Linkin Park singer said his ailments won't stop him from putting on a show. "That's not gonna prevent me from going out and shredding on this tour," he said. "I'm gonna go out and it's gonna be like nothing happened."

The Day Ozzy Bit The Bat
(Gibson) On this day in 1982, the wild man of rock, whose life was threatening to run out of control, did something at a concert in Des Moines that would turn into one of the great rock and roll tales of all time.

Ozzy Osbourne was touring America in support of the Diary of a Madman album with his Night of the Living Dead tour. The album title was strangely apt since stage shows had become more and more outrageous. At the end of a gig Ozzy would catapult meat (mostly intestines from a butchers shop) into the crowd. Naturally, Ozzy fans started to get into the spirit of the event and started bringing their own meaty offerings to shows. One fan was turned away from a concert for bringing in a whole Ox's head. On top of that, word was out that at a meeting with his record company in Los Angeles, Ozzy had bitten the head off a dove and fans were now beginning to bring small creatures of their own to gigs.

But that was the tone of relations between Ozzy and fans. So on this otherwise unremarkable night in Iowa, someone at the Des Moines concert threw a bat on stage. The bat, stunned by the bright lights, lay seemingly dead on the ground. Ozzy, always the showman of course, picked up the animal and bit into it. When the bat reacted by flapping its wings, Ozzy knew it was alive and, more importantly, a real bat (he later said he had presumed it was made of rubber). Ozzy was immediately rushed to hospital for rabies shots – not the best end to an evening. more on this story

The Grateful Dead 60 Disc Box Set
The Grateful Dead have announced a massive limited edition box set. Here's the details they sent over:

Grateful Dead slipped the shores of America and crossed the pond for its first-ever major European tour in April 1972. The legendary 22-show run spawned Europe '72, a live triple album that remains one of the band's best-selling and most beloved releases. A tour this momentous deserves a boxed set of historic proportions and Dead.net has stamped your passport to relive every note from the European tour with Europe '72: The Complete Recordings—an individually numbered, limited edition collection that includes more than 60 discs with over 70 hours of music featuring every show from what is arguably the Grateful Dead's greatest tour.

Europe '72: The Complete Recordings is housed in a replica steamer trunk reminiscent of the ones prevalently used at the time. Along with the music, a vast majority of which is previously unreleased, the travel chest contains tour memorabilia, a coffee-table book with never-before-seen photos, and a comprehensive essay by noted Dead author Blair Jackson. Each performance will also be accompanied by an essay specific to the show written by top Dead scholars including David Gans, Gary Lambert, Nicholas Meriwether, and Steve Silberman. more on this story

Slow Strokes
(Gibson) Nick Valensi, guitarist for The Strokes, wants to keep his band going. Coming off a difficult five-year process for the new Strokes album, tentatively titled Angles, he said that he and his bandmates are committed to sticking together and making more music in a timelier fashion.

"I don't want to make an album every five years," Valensi told Rolling Stone. "I love being in this band, and I want it to be a career thing. It's so worth it – for all of us."

The Strokes plan to tour on the album (due on March 22), and have already revealed their headlining slot at this year's Coachella Festival. "We want to come back strong but slowly, so we can grow live and also make new music," Valensi said. "We want to release albums quicker." more on this story

Singled Out: Tuck From Hell's Death Before Disco
Today Tuck From Hell tells us about "Death Before Disco" from their brand new album "Thrashing," which hits stores next Tuesday. Here is the story:

As i recall, we were at Polo΄s place watching a movie and drinking some beer. Later that evening, right after the usual scream-battle, we were switching channels. When MTV came up, everyone suddenly froze. I believe the so called artist was called Britney Spears.

Words cannot describe the feeling of burning hatred and disgust we all felt. Polo broke the silence with: Id rather die 20 times in a row, before having to play something like that!! We all agreed, and realized we had to write a song about our feelings towards this kind of "music."

The clichι lines, the groovy beat and the sing along choruses were a must, as we wanted to make fun of all the parts we despised. Though all of a sudden, we found ourselves with the neck-breaking thrash hit, that is Death Before Disco.

Hearing is believing. Now that you know the story behind the song, listen for yourself and learn more about the album right here!

The Town That Rejected The Beatles
We received this info about a book that should be of interest to Beatles fans: Back in 63 to liven up a town in Sussex, England a 19 year old promoter booked the Rolling Stones for $80 for a dance. It was a sell out. He then phoned Brian Epstein in Liverpool who offered him the Beatles for $390 !

The Beatles never appeared because the town of Horsham said no! No Beatles in our back yard. Nobody would hire him a hall.

That amazing unique story is the basis of a fact to fiction novel now published in America: 'Tear My Heart' takes that incident and tells it as it was: great new 60s songs, blackmail, romance, intrigue, abuse all wrapped up in 60s memorabilia. more on this story

Gary Cherone's Hurtsmile Coming Next Month
Hurtsmile is a new band featuring singer Gary Cherone (Extreme, Van Halen) and his brother Mark and they will release their self-titled debut album on February 8, 2011 in the US.

Here is the adjective filled description their PR folks sent out: The self-titled, Hurtsmile is a raw sonic sucker punch in the face! From the opening buzz saw riff of "Just War Theory" to the epic finale of "Slave" and "Beyond The Garden/Kicking Against the Goads", Gary continues to push and poke you in the ear with his lyrically provocative themes.

"Hurtsmile was a long time coming… I always wanted to write a record with my brother," says Gary. "I'm a big fan of Mark's song writing and his snarling guitar riffs." The timing was right as Extreme was in-between their touring and record cycle, leaving Gary the freedom. They recruited Joe Pessia (bass) an alumnus of Nuno Bettencourt's Dramagods as well as the guitar player for Tantric. Joe also engineered, and co-produced the record with Gary. To round off the lineup they enlisted heavy hitter Dana Spellman on drums "It's an east coast-Boston thing," states Gary. "Mark, my brother, was in a band with Nuno's brother… Joe was in Nuno's band and Dana was a friend, and student of Mike Mangini (former Extreme drummer) … we like to keep it in the family."
