Early Van Halen Recording Unearthed
The Metal Den has obtained what is reportedly an extremely rare live 1975 recording of Van Halen covering Led Zeppelin's classic song entitled "Trampled Under Foot", which came off Zeppelin's 1975 album Physical Graffiti.

Before they were selling out arenas, David, Eddie, Alex and Michael were killing it in the Hollywood club scene, most notably at Gazzarri's… which was ultimately demolished and became Billboard Live in 1996. In 1998, the legendary location became The Key Club.

The listener will be treated to a time when rock was fun and not some strenuous popularity game, like it is today. - Check it out here

Accidental Guns N' Roses Reunion
(hennemusic) Duff McKagan joining Guns N' Roses onstage at London's 02 Arena last week happened quite by accident.

"Things happen, in life, pretty crazy at times you least expect things to happen," Duff told KISW Seattle's "The BJ Shea Morning Experience" yesterday. "I got to London last Thursday (October 14). I was there on separate business — a separate business even from music. I checked into the hotel in London I stay at all the time. And the hotel manager came, 'Hey, Duff, we'll show you up to your room.' He goes, 'So you're playing tonight?' And I said, 'No, no, I'm here on just business this time — I'm not playing this time around.' And he looks at me strangely. 'What? You're not playing tonight?'"

"....So, I'm in these meetings and my phone starts ringing later on in the day in my hotel room; it was kind of managers and tour managers," said Duff. "The word (was) out I (was) in the hotel. And it came down to the simple fact... Axl and I just sort of met up, we saw each other and we hugged. I went down to the gig with him." - There is more to the story, check it out here

"We have about 12 songs with him," the U2 frontman told The Age. "At the moment that looks like the album we will put out next because it's just happening so easily."

Earlier this month, U2's manager Paul McGuinness said the Irish rockers would release a new album in spring 2011, before the start of their next U.S. tour. U2 are also working on what Bono calls a "club" album, which features contributions from the Black Eyed Peas' Will.i.am, French DJ David Guetta and Lady Gaga's creative partner RedOne. - more on this story

Singled Out: Default
Today Jeremy Hora from Default tells us about "Turn It On" from their brand new album "Comes & Goes," which comes out next Tuesday! Here is the story:

"Turn It On" was one of the last songs we worked on. We were gettin a little nervous because we didn't think we had enough rock tracks for our cd. Sometimes the best songs come out of despair in the last hour. We just started jamming the main riff and then it all started writing itself. We had nicknamed it "Stroke It Song" before we had words for it because of the feel of the verse. We cowrote the lyrics with Marty Frederickson, who we worked with last record as well.

There's no crazy story behind the lyrics. They kinda wrote themselves. Its just taken from the experiences we've had as well as watched go down in the 11 years we've been a band. Its one of my personal favorites on the record and to play live as well. The bridge has this Zeppelin feel right before it leads into the guitar solo that I really dig. It was nice to be able to just let loose and just rip a guitar solo too and then again at the end of the song. When we first recorded Turn It On we knew right away it was perfect to lead off the cd in that 1st spot. Live we do the same. Didn't expect it to be a single when we first finished it either. It was a nice surprise to be able to release it. I believe it showcases the band perfectly. Expect more songs like it in the future for Default for sure.

Hearing is believing. Now that you know the story behind the song, listen for yourself and learn more about the album - right here!

Dandy Warhols Reunion
(Gibson) Last weekend, The Dandy Warhols kicked off the American leg of the tour with a gig that was highly emotional and extremely fitting for a moment of retrospection.

The group's founding members – guitarist/vocalist Courtney Taylor-Taylor, guitarist Peter Holmstrom, and bassist/keyboardist Zia McCabe – re-teamed with original drummer Eric Hedford for a one-time-only gig at the Satyricon club in Portland, where the band played some of their earliest gigs.

The show was doubly poignant as it was part of a series of farewell shows for the club that many have described as Portland's answer to CBGB. - more on this story

Iggy Pop and James Williamson Kill City Again
(Gibson) This week, Bomp! records re-released one of the most crucial and controversial of proto-punk albums, Kill City by Iggy Pop and James Williamson.

Recorded in 1975 and originally released in 1977, the album captured a decadent and despairing time in Iggy's post-Stooges career, but also unleashed a fiercely defiant, guitar-driven approach to rock 'n' roll that proved to be remarkably influential for countless bands to follow. The album's sonic envelope-pushing was somewhat muted however by a sludgy mix and a poor pressing on green vinyl. Those problems have been addressed on the re-issue, which was restored, remixed and remastered by guitarist Williamson himself, working with A-list engineer Ed Cherney.

"Kill City was by all measures a desperate effort, a singularly honest and heartfelt performance, a genuine progression of our song writing, and another in a long line of flops that were later resurrected and heralded as masterpieces," Williamson said in a Bomp! press release. "By the time it was released as a record, both Iggy and I were off doing other things with our lives, but with this re-release we are not only reunited in our musical endeavors but in our appreciation of this album, its remix, and its importance to us as artists." - more on this story

Good Vibrations Hit On This Day
(Gibson) On this day in 1966, The Beach Boys "Good Vibrations" made its debut on the U.S. singles chart. Gibson looks back: The [Beach Boys' 1966 album Pet Sounds] proved a turning point in the group's musical progression and earned universally good reviews from critics and musicians (including British music royalty, Paul McCartney and George Martin).

The album didn't sell especially well but the commercial benefits of Wilson's studio methods would come with a song that Wilson worked on during the Pet Sounds sessions. "Good Vibrations" didn't make it on to the record, but would set new standards in pop studio production when released as a single. It debuted on the charts on this day in 1966.

The track was produced over 17 recording sessions at various studios, racking up over 90 hours of tape and costing in excess of $50,000. The distinctive electro-theremin that gave the song its eerie, whirring sound cost the band $15,000. Wilson revolutionized the recording process for this track, recording takes over and over and then editing the choice sections into the final mix. Wilson would take the same technique to his next project, Smile. The song would be Wilson's last #1 hit before LSD, depression and business issues turned him inwards and away from the music scene. Today the song is regarded as a pop classic and a revolutionary track in the evolution of recorded music. - more on this story
