(Rock AAA) Vocal armed forces supporters Queensryche were the victims of a bomb attack during a recent visit to war-torn Iraq but frontman Geoff Tate insists making the trip was the least the band could do.The prog metal outfit played a series of shows for military personnel. While in northern Iraq they were forced to take cover when a battle exploded around them, and although none of them were killed, they were left injured and shaken by the experience. "We got bombed. We had to spend a lot of hours in bunkers there, waiting for the insurgents to get under control. We all lived through it although we got injured that was a scary situation," Tate tells BraveWords.com. "A mortar landed about a hundred yards from where I was standing the ground just shook. It was amazingly powerful and scared the hell out of me. I'd just been standing there watching the sun come up, eating a little container of yoghurt and boom the bomb goes off."

(Gibson) The late, legendary Pink Floyd founder Syd Barrett remains one of the most enigmatic figures in rock music, and a new anthology of his work, An Introduction to Syd Barrett, is only likely to further the myths and mysteries surrounding the iconoclastic artist, who died in 2006. Of particular interest to Barrett fans will be the anthology's inclusion of a never-before released track, "Rhamadan," which is available as a bonus download to those who purchase the album. The track is drawn from the tumultuous sessions for Barrett's 1970 solo album, The Madcap Laughs, and is a prime example of Barrett's most noncommercial instincts. "Rhamadan" is essentially a 20-minute, freeform jam, with Barrett forsaking melody and structure as he solos on a variety of instruments.

(Rock AAA) Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich says the band have accepted the "slaps on the wrist" they received from the rock and metal community over the years. He understands people think the thrash giants lost their way, especially in their troubled period around the late 90s. But they still enjoy making music and importantly, they still do it for themselves. "It got out of control in the 90s. We were putting an album out every half an hour or something. We've certainly got our wrists slapped a couple of times by the community when we've gone too far." Lars tells FasterLouder. "I'm not going to give you the crap about doing it for the fans we do it for ourselves. But the best thing about music is when it's a shared experience. So that's why we've tried to give the fans so much access.

Today As They Sleep frontman Aaron Bridgewater tells us about "Oracle of the Dead" from their brand new album "Dynasty," which was released this week. Here is the story:"Oracle of the Dead" brings forth some of the mythological side of the new record. It observes the concept of using oracles to communicate with the dead... Hades (the Greek God of the underworld) was often associated with these "ceremonies" if you will. We figured we could touch on Heaven and Hell along with all of the other Empires/Gods mentioned in the album. So, we decided to start it off with the Hellish side of things on the opening track. Thus, "Oracle of the Dead" was born. Don't get it twisted though... We aren't condoning any such beliefs or behavior, just explaining the role and often "hold" that these dark endeavors can have on people's lives. As I said be before, I don't believe in using Ouija boards and what have you, but different strokes for different folks I guess. We're just here to write metal and deliver a message that's not drenched in filth. "Oracle of the Dead" is relentless... And that's what we were going for. Hearing is believing. Now that you know the story behind the song, listen for yourself and learn more about the album

Boyce's wife, Caroline, found him dead in the living room of their Nashville condo, where he had shot himself. One of the most successful songwriters of the'60s, Tommy and his writing partner Bobby Hart played a major role in The Monkees TV show, writing many of the group's early hits. But the writing success had begun back in the pre-Beatles rock and roll era when the young Boyce, only recently moved to Los Angeles from Arizona, pestered Fats Domino enough for the star to listen to his song "Be My Guest." Fats recorded it and Boyce saw it rise to the top of the charts. Teaming up with Hart in 1959, Boyce and his new pal would pen hits for numerous acts notably "Come a Little Bit Closer" for Jay and the Americans in 1964.
