Avenged Sevenfold Fire Mike Portnoy
(Rock AAA) Mike Portnoy has left Avenged Sevenfold at the band's request, he's revealed. The drummer has been standing in with the band since Jimmy 'The Rev' Sullivan died last Christmas, appearing on current album Nightmare and touring with them since the middle of the year.

Portnoy left Dream Theater in September, shocking fans and ex-bandmates alike since he'd founded the band 25 years previously. One of the reasons he gave was that he'd enjoyed his tenure with A7X more than he'd been enjoying working with his own outfit.

Now he says: "Sadly my time with Avenged Sevenfold has come to an end. The band has decided to carry on into 2011 without me." more on this story

"If I look back I can see the big gaps between records were just fear. I didn't feel confident. I thought the act of writing was terrifying," Reznor tells Tavis Smiley. Gwar Frontman Releasing Novel
From smoking crack to violating hobbits to the world of literature. Gwar's frontman is a true Renaissance man! (or alien): For many years Richmond Va. artist/musician Dave Brockie has been known to the world as Gwar's pig-snouted and bellicose lead "throat-thing", Oderus Urungus, playing to semi-packed houses around easily 35% of the world.

Brockie has now added literature to his already bulging quiver of artistic arrows. Eleven years after its completion, Brockie's sprawling epic of modern war and ancient necromancy, Whargoul, has finally been released in book form by Eraserhead Press.

The story of the Whargoul came to being in the late nineties as Brockie toured Europe with GWAR. Inspired by some of histories more despicable events, Brockie began drawing and writing about the creature that called itself "Whargoul". The idea of an undying creature that found sustenance in the carnage of war began to flesh itself out in the form of several comics for the now defunct Slave Pit Funnies, and was stand-out track on GWAR's 1997 album "Rag-Na-Rok". Ultimately Brockie decided the only way the story could truly be told was through a novel, and began hand-writing the book into a journal that was half-filled with pages of microscopic lettering, which he unbelievably lost, forcing him to re-write it from memory on his first lap-top. Brockie finally finished the book in 1999. more on this story

Rob Halford Talks Judas Priest Farewell Tour
(Gibson) Metal legend Rob Halford recently discussed Judas Priest's farewell tour announcement with SignOnSanDiego.com. He said that the tour would begin in 2011, but would probably stretch on until 2012. As for why the band is saying goodbye, Halford said that it was because of a bunch of reasons.

"I suppose retirement or slowing down, if you want to call it that, I don't know," he said. "I think you have to face mortality, that's for sure. Some bands keep going and going, some bands ease off a bit, and some bands stop altogether. It happens to all bands, eventually, and now this is something we're facing in Judas Priest. So, what we want to do is leave on what we feel are respectable terms, musically."

Although Priest is still very popular around the world and performing well, Halford said the band are in danger of "Muhammad Ali Syndrome."

"If you get in the ring too much, the whole thing can become really sad to look at and listen to," he said. "And you have to ensure that doesn't happen as a musician, especially in the extreme world of heavy metal, because it's very demanding to carry these old bodies all over the place. You try to do the things you could easily do 30 years ago and it's not so easy. What we would like our fans to do is consider that this something to celebrate and not feel sad or depressed about. It won't be all over in a flash."

Free NYC Sucks Metal Compilations Coming
Metal Sucks have the announced the release of a free digital compilation featuring the best of NYC's metal bands including Krallice, Hull, East Of The Wall, Black Anvil, Tombs, Made Out Of Babies, Goes Cube, The Binary Code and more.

Here is the official word with more details: NYC's metal scene is literally exploding at the seams. There are so many great local bands playing shows on a regular basis that on any given night you've got to make some pretty hard choices about where to get your headbang on. We try and highlight some of our favorite local bands on MetalSucks from time to time, but frankly it's just not possible to keep up; seemingly every month there's another fantastic band that's as good or better than any number of "signed" acts from around the U.S. or the world, only they're not that well-known outside of our city's borders.

That's something we hope to change with our brand new compilation, NYC Sucks. Volume 1, containing 14 songs by as many bands, will be released on January 18th, and Volume 2, containing 13, will be released on February 22nd. more on this story

Zooey Deschanel To Play Famous Groupie
(Gibson) She & Him singer and film actress Zooey Deschanel is set to co-produce and star in an HBO series about the life of famous rock and roll groupie Pamela Des Barres.

The show, currently in development, will feature work by writer Jill Soloway (Six Feet Under) and co-producer Tim Gibbons (Curb Your Enthusiasm), as well as Des Barres and her ex-husband Michael, according to LA Weekly.

The series is being called a "dramedy" that will feature Des Barres' view of rock and roll's glory years, a time in which she was linked to Mick Jagger, Jim Morrison and Jimmy Page, among other rock stars. As for the question of who will portray these rock stars, Des Barres says most of the legendary musicians will be cameos and more significant characters might be composites of various rockers. She says she's open to the idea of current musicians taking on roles of '70s stars. "I've always seen Rhett Miller (of alt-country group the Old 97s) as Graham Parsons," she said.

Come On Feel The Christmas Noize
On this day in 1973, Slade were at no. 1 on the U.K. singles chart with "Merry Xmas Everybody" their sixth chart topper. The song has re-entered the UK charts on eight other occasions. Gibson takes a closer look:

Britain's most popular Christmas single, by that archetypal '70s English band Slade was in fact recorded at the end of a very hot 1973 summer in New York. In the neighboring studio was John Lennon putting the finishes touches on his latest opus and Slade borrowed the master's keyboard for their soon-to-be perennial, "Merry Xmas Everybody."

Slade, originally skinheads but later kings of the glam power pop era, were, by 1973, veterans of five #1 U.K singles. They'd been groomed by former Animal and Jimi Hendrix manager Chas Chandler, who found them paying in a club in London. He told Chris Charlesworth of the Melody Maker in 1972, "I went down to see them at the Rasputin club in London, and they knocked me out. I was as impressed with Slade as I was when I first saw Jimi Hendrix. I wanted to find something different from the blues, and Jimi was the same thing. But Slade just had a ball on stage. After watching them work I had to sign them." more on this story

Singled Out: Machiavillains
Today Patrick Willse from the Machiavillains tells us about "Tirades Injustice" from their brand new album "Natural Selections". Here is the story:

This song is loosely based around a recapitulation of how my circle of friends seemingly imploded. They fell in and out with each other, always with much regret; a state of affairs that I in no way have found myself immune. Now I find myself in a more weathered position. When I saw so much more energy and potential for life years ago compared to now, I thought we were invincible. Since then camaraderie has fallen though it stays strong among a tiny handful of us.

So in an effort to express this cocktail of mixed emotions I started with a C Major chord and resolved it to E flat major. This movement of chords and the lyrics that accompany it represent to me a defiant optimism toward the loss of innocence. We are more mature now, we can see what works and what's broken in our lives is similar to what's broken in our country. Culpability and responsibility are not always pleasant and more often than not people try to find ways out of both by resolving to do nothing. We cannot idly accept this status quo in our personal or public affairs.

People should not be forced to suffer or perish because of miscommunications and misunderstandings compiled with apathy, animus and greed. We see too much of that behavior these days, I'd like to think that it's something that we can change that would make the future better.

Now that you know the story behind the song, learn more about the band and album right here!

The original segments were created and animated by Jay Ward (Rocky & Bullwinkle) and feature appearances by Crunch regulars Jean LaFoote, the Crunchberry Beast, Smedley the Elephant as well as cameos from other classic cereal icons.

"I thought it would be a fun, almost odd act of musical rebellion to transcend some of my love for the breakfast cereal culture thematically and sonically into a punk-pop song," explains Cafiero. "Cereal mascots, commercial campaigns and the box-art itself were just as important, sometimes even more so, than the cereal itself," he finishes.

John Mellencamps latest concert tour is full of American fools, dreamers, saints, sinners and above all else survivors. For over two hours, Mellencamp shined a light on these characters in what is more than his best concert tour in nearly two decades, but without question, the best concert I experienced in all of 2010. - Read the full Best of 2010: John Mellencamp Live in Chicago review
