Get Ready For Van Halen
(hennemusic) We know something's going on in the Van Halen camp these days. This past weekend, David Lee Roth posted a cryptic message on his website that read simply: "Get Ready..."

As usual, nothing from VH itself, as their website hasn't been updated since December of 2009. Shameful for a band of this stature to have such a poor online presence, but let's hope someone gets hired to work on the site before the new album comes out.

Expected to be released before year-end, the highly-anticipated record represents VH's first full album with Roth in 27 years, and the band's first album since 1998. The group began recording in January with producer John Shanks. more on this story

Why Slayer Sat Out Jam With Metallica, Megadeth and Anthrax
(Rock News Desk) Kerry King says he was scheduled to appear as part of the Big 4′s live jam in Gothenburg, Sweden, at the weekend – but changed his mind after Metallica changed the track to be played.

"We were going to play the Anti Nowhere League song So What, and I'd rehearsed it. But they changed it to Am I Evil at the last minute and I decided not to do it," Slayer axeman King explains. "I haven't thought about that songs for two months since we played it in California."

Slayer frontman Tom Araya has previously voiced his unhappiness with Am I Evil as the thrash giants' jam track, saying it's not representative of Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth and Anthrax as a movement. more rock news

KK Didn't Quit Judas Priest For Golf
(Rock News Desk) Retired Judas Priest guitarist KK Downing has denied he left the band because he wanted to concentrate on running his golf course.

He surprised fans by announcing his departure just as the metal gods revealed their current world tour would be their last. His statement alluded to dissatisfaction with "management and band elements" but he didn't elaborate.

Bassist Ian Hill, now Priest's sole remaining original member, recently suggested Downing wanted to focus on his nine-hole course at his Shropshire home of Astbury Hall. But Downing has rubbished the suggestion."I love Iain as a brother and nothing will ever change that – but his take on the situation is inaccurate, and the people from the press has no license to jump in and take what they thought was a cheap scoop out of what Ian thought the situation was," He says. "My golf course is not, and was never, the reason for not doing the tour with Judas Priest." more on this story

The self-titled SuperHeavy album will be released in September, but a taster single, "Miracle Worker," will debut the week of July 4.

Stewart describes SuperHeavy, in a statement, as "a mad alchemist type experiment." Jagger says, "We haven't planned to do a tour or anything, but if people really like it maybe we will. We'd love to get out and play some of it live. As soon as we started playing together in the studio it gelled, and all these different styles didn't seem to be a problem to make them fit together... Vinnie Vincent Rewrites His History and Plans To Redo Invasion Album
(Rock News Desk) Troubled ex-Kiss guitarist Vinnie Vincent says his Wikipedia entry is inaccurate and has written his own version of his own history.

He's also stated he plans to re-record the second Vinnie Vincent Invasion album, All Systems Go, because he always hated the version which was released.

Vincent writes: "The common misconception was that a 'band' was signed to the label. However, it was Vincent who was signed exclusively to Chrysalis as a 'solo artist' off the power of his demo. Vincent began recording and the end result was 'Vinnie Vincent Invasion'. A virtual powerhouse of great songs, in-your-face, over-the-top guitar, great layered intricate harmonies and piercing vocals, 'Vinnie Vincent Invasion' exploded onto rock radio and became the fastest-selling debut album in the history of Chrysalis Records. a lot more here

Former Onslaught Members Regroup
(Rock News Desk) Former Onslaught drummer Steve Grice has assembled a band made up of fellow ex-members and plans to tour a live performance of their 1989 album In Search of Sanity.

The project is called Onslaught: The Sanity Days and also features singer Steve Grimmett, who sang on the album, plus guitarist Alan Jordan from 2007′s Killing Peace and bassist Jase Stallard from the 1980s.

The title was a departure from Onslaught's previous and later thrash metal outings, and the material doesn't appear in their live shows for that reason. Flea Promises Something Different With New Red Hot Chili Peppers
(Gibson) With a new album, I'm With You, set for release on August 30, Red Hot Chili Peppers seem poised to carry on a winning streak that began with the group's fourth album, Mother's Milk, in 1989. That album not only marked the L.A. funk rockers' entry into the Billboard charts, but also the addition of guitarist John Frusciante and drummer Chad Smith. Smith is still around, on hiatus from the supergroup Chickenfoot, but Frusciante has moved on—marking a major shift for the band.

"Well there are a few huge differences [between this album and the last]," bassist Flea told Stereogum. "The number one difference is John Frusciante left the band, and he was a huge part of our creative process for a long time. I'm so grateful for him. He wrote the principal parts for many of our most popular songs, and the parts for many of our most artistically profound songs, which weren't necessarily popular. He just gave us so much as a songwriter, as a player, as a human being, and just his relationship to music, which is such a beautiful and pure and powerful one."

The dervish-like bassist explained the transition: "We took two years off from the band during that time he left, and I didn't think I'd want to continue the band without him. But once he left, I realized that dealing with this different situation, it seemed like it would be, I just felt so much love for the band, and love for Anthony [Kiedis], I just wanted to keep doing it and once we made that decision I decided to get Josh, so my point is—I kind of went on a big tangent there—a big difference is having Josh Klinghoffer as our guitar player, because he's a much different guitar player than John." more on this story

Pulp Singer Jarvis Cocker Sets Book Release
(Gibson) Pulp singer Jarvis Cocker will release a book of his lyrics this October. According to The Guardian, the book is called Mother, Brother, Lover: Selected Lyrics.

Cocker explained the books: "When [Pulp's lyrics] were reproduced on the record sleeves, it always used to say 'N.B. please do not read the words while listening to the recordings.' But I've accumulated a certain amount of work now and I think a lot of the appeal is that Faber have published a lot of poets I like. The idea that I could be allowed on the same shelf is very flattering. So I went back and looked at the words, and with that passage of time I realized some of them were alright."

Cocker and a reunited Pulp recently played Glastonbury and will perform at the Reading and Leeds festival in August. more on this story

Singled Out: The Northstar Session's Late Bloomer
Today Matthew Szlachetka from The Northstar Session tells us about the title track to their new album "Late Bloomer". Here is the story:

"Late Bloomer" is one of those songs that songwriter's either say "it just hits" or "just came to them." In this case, the song came out of a music idea or riff that I had cataloged a couple years before Kane and I wrote it. The meat of the song is basically a variation of 2 chords that creates tension with the vocal melody.

When I initially came up with the music I had a sort of anthem, sing along, group chorus idea in my head (which is initially how the song begins). Kane and I wanted the focus of the song to be centered around the chorus so we decided to pretty much keep the verse and chorus structure (chord-wise) essentially the same. This is probably also one of the most minimally structured songs we've written, the simplicity of the music portion really allowed us to focus of the lyrics, melody and groove.

So the writing process that Kane and I usually do starts with a chord progression or riff that either one of us brings to the table. Sometimes it happens with a lyric or melody, but in most cases spawns from a progression or riff. The song usually starts to take shape after we've been hanging out and chatting for a while. Usually the subject of the song is a result of the conversation we were having. "Late Bloomer" came out of a conversation we were having about people we knew; friends & fellow musicians who we felt had so much talent and potential but had somehow become lost along the way. Some had realized their potential and capitalized on it, but in most cases, these people were floating around waiting for something to happen instead of taking charge. We wanted to write a song about the "late bloomer" type of person that has sat on their talent for longer than usual but finally wakes up and takes action after the "light bulb goes on." We both definitely had some previous personal experience with this subject matter, so that also helped write some of the lyrics faster.

This song literally was written in about 15 minutes. After our initial conversation (and a few glasses of wine!!!) Kane and I came up with the chorus idea. We usually start with the chorus idea so that we know that our initial focus will be for the song. The main theme of the song "oh no, alright, let go" was the anthem and sing along focus that we wanted. We chose to use that as the beginning, creating a prelude to the chorus, because once you get there (to the chorus), you get the resolution to that phrase which is "I'm a late bloomer and the moment is now, I know, I know, I know, I know." This was the light at the end of the tunnel portion of the conflict and the idea of the lost person waking up. The verses became the conflict/ tension and the chorus- the resolution and release.

I wish every song could be written in 15 minutes! When they do come (and you are pleased with the end results) you feel really lucky as a songwriter.

Hearing is believing. Now that you know the story behind the song, listen for yourself and learn more about the album right here!
