Sebastian Bach Goes After Man With a Knife at Guns N' Roses Show
Former Skid Row frontman Sebastian Bach reportedly helped avert possible disaster at Sunday night's surprise Guns N' Roses show at a New York City club when he spotted a drunk patron wielding a knife and took quick action.

This is all according to what an unnamed source told New York Post's Page Six: "The man walked in while Guns N' Roses was onstage and pulled out a knife and flicked the blade out."

Bach, who was standing on a banquette said: 'Nobody is getting anywhere near my man Axl Rose with a knife,' and went after him. Security then immediately threw him out." - read more at Jam!

Singled Out: Cassino
Welcome to Singled Out! where we ask artists to tell us the inside story of their latest single. Today Nick from Cassino tells us about the title track from their sophomore album "Kingprince". We now turn it over to Nick for the story:

"Kingprince" is the nickname of a friend, and the song was a bit of a struggle to write. The words and music came easy, but when you deal with something this heavy, the thought of what others will think weighs on you, especially when these are people you see on a regular basis. This was the second song that was inspired by the death of someone I knew, and the first time I had no idea what my thoughts would stir up. The first time around I planned on using his name in the title of a song, but the family got wind of it and it became a big deal. Here I was in my crappy little bedroom, writing music for an album that would be on the shelves of Best Buy, writing things that deeply affected his family, people who I hardly even knew. I just thought it would make a good song, not even taking into account the circumstances of his death. I guess Music can be a powerful thing sometimes (after all it IS the language of the soul). I felt like an a**hole for not talking to his family first. Honesty is the most important part of music, but I still don't know if there is a line that should not be crossed…

The song "Kingprince" is inspired by a friend who took his own life, and I say "inspired" because I don't really ever write about a certain, particular circumstance (names, dates, times etc.). I guess it's just more about the experience. I write mostly from the 1st person perspective, regardless if it is something that happened to me or someone else. Luckily I also write mostly in metaphors, so in the end it all ends up being pretty universal. I don't know why it's always a metaphor, that's just how it's always been. Anyways…He was always a great friend, a wonderful person, funny, and troubled. Before he passed, he had a couple run-ins with the law, and then was living in his car in Alabama…he tended to disappear off and on towards the end. I hope he knows his friends and family miss him, and I'm sure he's out skating on the rings of Saturn, and exploring all the dimensions we can't see. I was supposed to play at the funeral, but I got mixed up and they ended up just playing a Cassino song on the overheads…I felt really bad….So I hope he can forgive me for that. I think we would have dug this song….

Side note- the Harmonica track and the electric guitars were the "demo" very first takes…after about a couple of days of writing parts, we went back and listened, and nothing even came close.

Hearing is believing. Now that you know the story behind the song, listen for yourself and learn more about the album - more on this story

Prog Rockers Ensemble Mangrove's 2009 CD Still Going Strong
When you think of Dutch progressive rock, bands like Focus, Supersister, Kayak and Earth and Fire immediately come to mind. Now with the release of their 5th CD, Dutch prog ensemble Mangrove can proudly be added to this prestigious list.

Touted by as "essential listening" by Jerry Ewing of Classic Rock Presents Prog magazine, Mangrove's latest CD masterpiece 'Beyond Reality' has been garnering international praise since its release this past June. "We are very excited about the great reviews out there," says Chirs Jonker who plays keyboards with the band. "They come from all over the world, which is truely amazing! Most reviewers are stunned and excited about the the big step forward we made in comparison with the previous albums. We are also very happy that our latest album has been nominated for the 'Italian Prog Awards', for best artwork, best recording and best foreign record. Its predessor 'Facing The Sunset' already got the IO Pages Prog Award in 2005 for best prog album of that year in The Netherlands."

On June 27th 2009 Mangrove released the long expected and stunning new studio album 'Beyond Reality'. The title seems to fit the great expectations of the band very well. On this album the development of a professional approach, songwriting capabilities and the moments of virtuosity are clearly showcased. Beside the epic tracks like "Daydreamer's Nightmare" and the vivacious "Voyager", there is the title track "Beyond Reality" which exhibits elements of classic rock suitable for a wide music loving audience. Together with the beautiful modesty of "Love and Beyond", the 18-minute epic "Time Will Tell" and the instrumental powerplay of "Reality Fades", an enormous variety is presented to the listener. With this new album, Mangrove intends to make a clear statement: pushing the limits in an amazing way. Driven by where it all started with: passion for the music. "All we try to say to our fans and potential fans is captured inside our music: people who like it to be carried away on a musical journey, will be satisfied from beginning to end," explains Chris Jonker. "We try to bring the sensation of seventies giants like Pink Floyd, Genesis, Yes and King Crimson back to life, even though we add our own distinctive Mangrove sound." - more on this story

Carmine Appice's SLAMM in PA
Carmine Appice's SLAMM!!, the "stomp on steroids" drum act led by the drummer icon and currently taking the USA by storm, is set to perform on Saturday, April 17th at the Sherman Theater, 524 Main Street in Stroudsburg, PA.

Created by legendary drummer Carmine Appice, SLAMM is an exhilarating, physically combustible theatrical percussion show featuring insanely talented musicians and the rock master, Carmine Appice. Author, clinician, drummer, philanthropist, Appice first came to prominence as the percussionist with the late 1960s psychedelic band Vanilla Fudge. He contributed distinctive background harmonies with bassist Tim Bogert, adding to the group's high decibel sonic assault. After five albums, Appice and Bogert left Vanilla Fudge to form the blues rock quartet Cactus with vocalist Rusty Day and guitarist Jim McCarty.

Eventually, Appice left Cactus with Bogert to join Jeff Beck in the power trio Beck, Bogert & Appice, and then later joined Rod Stewart's backing band in 1977, co-writing hit songs such as "Do Ya Think I'm Sexy?" and "Young Turks". In 1978, Appice played drums on Paul Stanley's first solo album. He was a member of KGB featuring Ray Kennedy, Rick Grech, Mike Bloomfield and Barry Goldberg, and has recorded with Stanley Clarke, Ted Nugent, and Pink Floyd. He was the drummer for the bands King Kobra, Guitar Zeus, and Blue Murder, and toured with Ozzy Osbourne. Now Appice performs with the SLAMM cast, turning drums, buckets, drain pipes, trampolines, oil cans and kegs into an irresistibly rockin' show. - more on this story

The Fletchers Go Soph Next Week
On February 23, indie rock band The Fletchers, will self-release the anticipated follow up to the 2008 debut Bright Blue Lights. Lights Out Loud, which has been topping the CMJ Charts at WRSU-FM Rutgers for three consecutive weeks, is the sophomore effort of the NJ-based four-piece founded by Gary Kaplan of 90s buzz-bands Rotator Cuff and Dandelion Fire.

WRSU Music Director Lisa Uber said, "The Fletchers 2008 release was an instant hit at 88.7 WRSU FM. Their follow-up followed a similar path, debuting at #1 on our CMJ charts and has continued to be a DJ favorite. Gary has a long history in the local area and at WRSU, and if this recent success is any indicator, The Fletchers' 'Lights Out Loud' will surely catch the attention of music fans in the rest of the country and abroad."

Lights Out Loud features ten original songs written by Kaplan, including the breakout single "Beaches." With his raspy vocal style, likened to Hüsker Dü/Sugar frontman Bob Mould, and fuzz-laden lead guitar, Kaplan delivers infectious indie pop influenced by Britpop and American Indie acts like XTC, Parklife-era Blur and REM, and even 60sinvasion acts like The Kinks. In addition to Kaplan, The Fletchers are Dan Coffey (bass and backing vocals), Cliff Heaton (drums) and Rob Freda (guitar). - more on this story

Gov't Mule Star Guests on Mason Reed's New EP
Tucson, Arizona-based singer-songwriter Mason Reed will be releasing his new EP, "You Can't Come Back From Heaven," on his own label on February 23, 2010. It will be available online via all download portals, and hard copies will be available at shows and at www.masonreedmusic.com.

Recorded over five days in January 2010 in Los Angeles, California, and produced by Reed and engineer Steve Holroyd (Ryan Adams, Tom Petty), the new EP features an appearance by bass master Jorgen Carlsson of the band Gov't Mule on three of the tracks, including the first single, "Not Perfect." Reed says: "This record is about lost loves and found purpose. It's a gritty, bare-knuckled representation of giving it all up to face your dreams and demons head on."

Featuring his unique, soul-filled, smoky voice, the five-song EP's release will kick off a self-proclaimed "Never Ending Tour" for Reed, who plans to play both solo shows and full bands shows (see tour dates below). The tour starts on February 17th in Los Angeles. "I'm a work horse for sure," says Reed. "Road, studio, road, studio. This is the schedule we have, and I love it. I wouldn't have it any other way." It comes as no surprise that the first track on the EP lyrically reaffirms Reed's love of the troubadour lifestyle: "I don't love nobody, but I love that road."

Devin Townsend Checks in
One of metal's most intriguing, ominous and immensely talented figures, the mighty Devin Townsend, just completed an extremely successful North American trek with genre visionaries Between The Buried and Me, Cynic and Scale The Summit. This was Townsend's first tour in a number of years and the first in support of his new, mind-blowing offering, Addicted, that was met with worldwide critical praise and scored very impressive first week numbers debuting at #168 on the Billboard Top 200 chart and #2 on the Billboard Heatseakers chart.

Townsend checks in with the following report in regards to the success of the tour and his plans for the remainder of the year. He states: "Tour one in the can! Man, what a heck of an experience. I had gone back into touring with a certain amount of trepidation. 'will I flake? Can I do this without the 'persona? Is this life going to wipe me out?' but as is with most things, you never know until you're 'in it'.

"After a week of tumultuous shows (click tracks through front of house, monitor problems, broken guitars, etc.) I began to realize that really NOTHING has changed since Ozzfest for me. I'm still the same cheeseball performer, but now my voice is clear and I have the realization that I am honored to do this, and I really missed it. I love playing for people, and to finally represent all the emotions that go into my work, as opposed to just one or two is a dream come true and one that I don't take lightly. - more on this story
