Soundgarden Guitar Heroes With New Release
The Soundgarden reunion continues with the announcement of a new compilation that will include a previously unreleased track and the band will make history by being the first to bundle an album with a major video game. Here is the announcement:

Soundgarden will release their first collection of music since 1996 in the form of Telephantasm on September 28th in the US and September 27th internationally. This multi-label, career-spanning retrospective album includes beloved band hits, deep back catalogue cuts and a never-before-heard unreleased track entitled "Black Rain," taken from the Badmotorfinger recording sessions. Telephantasm marks the first time ever a collection of its kind has been collated in one place.

Like the iconic '60s and '70s bands which inspired them, Soundgarden redefined rock music for a whole generation and had a revolutionary impact on the course of musical history. As one of the first bands to release music on the venerated Sub Pop label, and the first band to come out of the 90's Seattle music scene to later sign to a major label, they are once again making history with Telephantasm. The band has announced that they will be partnering with innovative gaming publisher Activision Publishing, Inc. to release the album on September 28th via A&M/UMe inside 1 million copies of the new videogame Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock. This release marks the first time a music album will be simultaneously released and bundled with a video game launch.

Brian May Shares The Physics Behind Queen's We Will Rock You
Queen guitarist Brian May recently spoke with Terry Gross, the host of NPR's Fresh Air, about his band's legacy, the greatness of frontman Freddie Mercury and how his astrophysics degree helped in the recording of "We Will Rock You." In the interview, May said that his physics background gave him the idea for how to make the "stomp-stomp-clap" portion of "We Will Rock You" sound like a stadium full of people.

"Being a physicist, I said, 'Suppose there were 1,000 people doing this; what would be happening?' And I thought, 'Well, you would be hearing them stamping. You would also be hearing a little bit of an effect, which is due to the distance that they are from you,'" May explained. "So I put lots of individual repeats on them. Not an echo but a single repeat at various distances… So you just feel like you're in the middle of a large number of people stamping and clapping."

May said he was amazed that the song has become an anthem. "I didn't realize that it would translate to sports games. This is an amazing thing," he said. "'We Will Rock You' and "We Are the Champions" have kind of transcended the normal framework of where music is listened to and appreciated – they've become part of public life, which I feel wonderful about. It's fantastic to me, if I go to a football game or a soccer game or basketball or whatever – or any place all around the world – and there it is. And I think, 'My God. Most people don't even realize that I wrote it.' Most people don't realize that it was written. It's sort of become one of those things that people think was always there. So in a way, that's the best compliment you could have for the song." - more on this story

Ozzy Wants To Form Non-Metal Band
Blabbermouth reports that Ozzy Osbourne told VH1 Radio Networks' Dave Basner that he fancies trying other genres of music aside from heavy metal.

"Being Ozzy Osbourne is great," he said. "I mean, it's been wonderful being the singer of Black Sabbath. Having all those hits through Sabbath and then on my solo career is one thing, but then if I want to do anything branching away from the heavy stuff, people will go, 'Oh, he's sold out. Oh, he's not doing it. Oh, he's singing a love song. Oh, he's singing about the…' or whatever."

Ozzy went on to reveal what kind of projects he's contemplating pursuing that would allow him to explore musical styles outside the heavy rock genre. "I would like to form a fictitious band just to make a different record, but it's the time it would take," he explained. "I mean, it takes me all my time just to do an Ozzy record. But I would dearly like to get a mini-supergroup together. Nothing like heavy rock, like a bluesy vibe." - more on this story

Jefferson Airplane Live Albums To Be Unearthed in Roctober
Four never-before-released live albums by Jefferson Airplane are set to be released October 26 on Collectors' Choice Music Live.

The four live albums include original vocalist Signe Anderson's farewell show and Grace Slick's first show, both at the Fillmore in 1966. Here is the announcement with more details:

The argument rages on, but for many music fans in the '60s, the best live band from the Bay Area was Jefferson Airplane. Formed during the summer of 1965 in San Francisco, the group triumphed in 1967 with Surrealistic Pillow, one of the key recordings of the Summer of Love, containing the hits "Somebody to Love," "White Rabbit" and "Today." The Airplane featured three master instrumentalists (Jorma Kaukonen, Jack Casady and Spencer Dryden) and three vocalists: Grace Slick (replacing original singer Signe Anderson in 1966), Marty Balin and Paul Kantner. The Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame inductees made a total of eight studio albums and released a smattering of live albums including 1969's Bless Its Pointed Little Head. - more on this story

Wilco Sideband Autumn Defense Announce New Album and Live Performance
Wilco's John Stirratt and Pat Sansone will release their fourth Autumn Defense album Once Around on November 2nd 2010 via Yep Roc Records. The band will perform during the Wilco-curated Solid Sound Festival on August 15th.

Founding Wilco member John Stirratt and multi-instrumentalist/current member Pat Sansone bring the sounds of a California summer to the fall when they release Once Around 11/2 on Yep Roc. The band's fourth full-length is filled with late 70s-tinged AM gold, all draped in melodies that seem to have always existed, resulting in songs that feel as though they've been floating on clouds, patiently waiting for their turn in the sun.

Much more than a side-project, The Autumn Defense is a fully realized, decade-long creative outlet for Stirratt and Sansone, elucidating a fresh set of songwriting goals and avenues of artistic expression. Once Around finds the band with a renewed vision and focus. Extensive touring plans are in the works which will allow the new material to flower in a way previous projects weren't able to enjoy.

Singled Out: Gypsyhawk (Ex-Skeletonwitch)
Welcome to Singled Out! where we ask artists to tell us the inside story of their latest single. Today Eric Harris formerly of Skeletonwitch tells about his new band Gypsyhawk and the song of the same name from the their debut album "Patience And Perseverance". We now turn it over to Eric for the story:

I remember writing all of the song 'Gypsyhawk' back in the dead of winter when I lived in Athens, Ohio. It was all done on a four track and I was waiting so long to be able to play it. It wasn't until almost a year-and-a-half later that I had the opportunity to put it together with a band, but the original intention carried a 'black and roll' kind of feel, then I realized, "f*** all that noise, I love the early classic rock sound." So with some minor adjustments, we got the tune nailed down to where it's at now.

The song title came along with the band name (obviously), but me and my buddy, Greg, were high as s*** one day talking about cool band names…partly because I needed a band name and his band was in the process of changing their name. Then, all of a sudden, I pretty much chalk this one up to collective consciousness, I was like, 'Gypsyhawk,' then when the weed smoke cleared enough for me to see Greg's face, he was like, "Yeah, that's rad." Then the name just stuck. Almost everyone that heard the name after that was super stoked on it, so I felt like I made ONE right decision.

The song "Gypsyhawk" was titled that originally because I had no idea what to call the song or what I was going to write about. It slowly came to me: the lyrics are all about my experiences living in and leaving places without being tied down, kind of like a roamin' gypsy vibe…A troubadour. During my childhood in Louisiana, I was always moving -- from Abbeville to Youngsville to Lafayette to Opelousas, even to Fort Worth, Texas. And then in my 19th year, I moved to Ohio. I started out living in Columbus, then Athens, to Cleveland and finally Nelsonville before unexpectedly relocating to Los Angeles. So, I figured I should just write about what I know....moving. And since "Gypsyhawk" was the song that got all this started, I wanted the lyrics to count for more than just some made up s***."

Hearing is believing. Now that you know the story behind the song, listen for yourself and learn more about the album, the band and grab tour dates - right here!

Jack White and My Morning Jacket's Carl Broemmel Guest on New Secret Sisters 45
Third Man Records have announced August 10th release of The Secret Sisters' debut 45. The Jack White-produced record features a cover of Johnny Cash's Big River and the sisters' take on the classic folksong The Wabash Cannonball, with My Morning Jacket's Carl Broemmel on pedal steel and White on guitar. Presales are currently being accepted now through www.thirdmanrecords.com.

The musical influences on the sisters (Laura and Lydia Rogers) aren't hard to pin down. The pair attributes the development of their distinct vocal style to singing at family picnics, church functions, and to growing up with "a love of music from all sides'" of the family in Mussel Shoals, Alabama. The intimacy between the sisters translates beautifully onto their new record: the B-side boasts harmonies straight out of the 1930s, and the A-side, though decidedly heavier on the guitar, still highlights the pure, clear vocals that are sure to become the trademark of the Secret Sisters.

150 Tri Color singles will be made available of this release. 50 will be included in random mail-orders through Third Man Records' website, and 100 will be available from their Nashville storefront on Saturday August 14th from 12 noon.

That Metal Show Host Goes Rap For Fat Chicks Cover
That Metal Show host Don Jamieson is the latest addition to the upcoming tribute album "Whole Lotta Love: An All-Star Salute To Fat Chicks."

In a surprising first, Jamieson provides lead vocals for a rap/rock version of the hip-hop smash "Baby Got Back." An homage to thick and curvy women with an abundance of junk in the trunk, the song was first popularized in 1992 by rapper Sir Mix-A-Lot (who has himself taken to performing a metal version of the song in recent years). All music for Don's interpretation was arranged and performed by Paul LaPlaca (Chris Caffrey, The Great Kat, Zandelle), with backing vocals provided courtesy of rock & roll comic C.C. Banana.

"It's hard to pinpoint exactly how I came to agree on doing this song," explains Don Jamieson. "A man I know only as C.C. Banana asked me if I would rap on an album about fat broads. Though I've been intimate with a few ladies in the heavyweight division before, I've never actually rapped about them. For that matter, I've never rapped about anything. Now that I think about it, I guess it was the promise of a cold beer that sealed the deal. So thank you, C.C. and Paul, I had a blast. Oh yeah, and thank you, Budweiser." - more on this story

Sunny Songwriter Bobby Hebb Dies
Bobby Hebb has died. He's best-known for the 1966 pop hit "Sunny," one of the most popular songs of all time, covered by Frank Sinatra, James Brown and Ella Fitzgerald among the hundreds of other artists.

According to Nashville newspaper The Tennessean, he died Tuesday at 10:50 a.m. at Centennial Medical Center in Nashville. He was 72.

Hebb wrote "Sunny" in response his brother's murder outside a Nashville nightclub and the assassination of President John F. Kennedy a few days previously. "Sunny" was so popular that he toured with The Beatles. He told The Tennessean in 2004, "John [Lennon] and George [Harrison] were very quiet. Claude Hay To Be Deep Fried Satisfied Next Month
Australian blues/roots guitarist Claude Hay's debut album, Deep Fried Satisfied, will be released September 21st by Ingot Rock

Hailing from Australia's Blue Mountains, Claude Hay is a prime example of the Do-It-Yourself work ethic, having hand-built his own twin-neck guitar, lovingly called "Betty," and customized his tour van with a kitchen and a recording studio. In addition to building his own instruments, Hay also built his own house, too. And his musical approach is no different – he's literally a one-man band, constructing layer-upon-layer of instruments live and in the studio until he has listeners guessing where the rest of the band is hiding.

In Claude's case, it's just his amazing technical and musical abilities showcased to the max, as he fuses vocals with slide guitar, sitar, bass and electronic percussion in a loop-driven performance that invokes the best of stomping traditional blues with a booty –shaking funk edge. His fresh, unique take on blues and roots attracts a wide spectrum of listeners, but Claude still has the chops to grab blues enthusiasts.

If you purchase a copy of Rules to Rock By at your local bookstore- anywhere from Barnes & Noble to your corner bookstore, and email Josh the receipt, he will personally send you a download link for the book's soundtrack (josh@rulestorockby.com)!

On top of an original track from indie-rock legends Deerhoof, the soundtrack also features covers of Santigold, The Dandy Warhols, and Miike Snow, on top of several original tracks written by Josh Farrar and the Rules to Rock By crew!

Rusty Anderson Born On Earth Again
Rusty Anderson's sophomore solo album Born On Earth arrived in stores [again?] this week on his own Oxide Records. [Amazon shows it was originally released October 6, 2009.]

Born On Earth is a loosely conceptual look at modern life and what it's like, as individuals and in communities, to be alive in this era and on our planet, while musically it's a diverse mix of guitar-heavy and dreamy modern rock/classic power-pop.

Anderson, perhaps most immediately recognized as lead guitarist for the Paul McCartney Band, fills the album with his free, expressive guitar playing yet displays a remarkable gift for restraint, while his clear tenor soars throughout. - more on this story
