The Methods to Rubin's Madness
Metal Underground reports: In a brand new article published in this past weekend's edition of the New York Times magazine, co-head of Columbia Records Rick Rubin spoke about his work as a producer for such bands as Metallica, Linkin Park And Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Whenever he agrees to produce an album, Rubin scrutinizes the songs before going into the studio. Rubin works slowly, it can take him years to finish an album. "A lot of that is because of the songs," Rubin explained. "I try to get the artist to feel like they are writing songs for the ages rather than songs for an album. As they write, they come over and play the songs for me. For some reason, most people will write 10 songs and think, That's enough for a record, I'm done. When they play the songs for me, invariably the last two songs they've written are the best. I'll then say, 'You have two songs, go back and write eight more.' "

His responses are instant, specific and constructively definitive. In the early Metallica sessions, Rubin has been exacting about different drum sounds. "Lars" Ulrich, the drummer "will play two things for me, and I'll say, 'This one is great and that one is terrible,' " Rubin recalled. "Lars will say: 'How do you know? They both sound good to me.' Well, I just know. The right sound reaches its hand out and finds its way. So much of what I do is just being present and listening for that right sound." [Good that Rick is on the case now instead of Bob Crock so we won't get Lars bashing pots and pans this go around!]

Lizzy Borden Has An Appointment with Death
antiMusic reports: Metal Blade has a set a October 2nd release date for the new Lizzy Borden album "Appointment with Death". Lizzy's first new studio offering in seven years. A concept tour is also planned around the concept of the album.

Here is a little of what the label had to say about the release: Appointment with Death was produced by L. Borden and J. Scott It was recorded at the Zanzibar studios in N. Hollywood CA. And was mixed by Erik Rutan (Hate Eternal/ex-Morbid Angel) at Mana sound in Florida.

Like all past Lizzy Borden recordings, Appointment with Death is a conceptual piece; this concept is centered around the theme of, as the title implies, Death. "Oddly enough, writing eleven songs about death was no easy task for me; lyrically being graphic or grotesque would have been too easy, and being overly morbid would bring nothing new to the concept. I wrote this just like I have all of the other LB recordings, as a play or a movie. There is a beginning, middle and an end with the lead character taking us on a journey. Death is all around us, lurking, waiting to pounce, striking fear and antagonizing the living in many different ways, I tried to explore some of those ways in the most poetic way that I know how" commented Lizzy.- a lot more including tracks, who played on the CD and more

"(…) If You already noticed, there is new DVD gonna be released soon. The show was recorded in the club "Stodola" in Warsaw. That's why the title came from ("...and Blood Was Shed in Warsaw"). The main part of the DVD are the songs from our last releases, BUT...there are some rarities on this material like "Sword of the Witcher"! What the Hell is that? There's CD-Projekt RED who work on PC games and who asked us to compose a song, which is gonna be kinda "trailer-song" for Their upcoming game. The title of the game is "The Witcher" and this is pretty fresh RPG in the fantastic , filled with brutality and Magic world of the Witcher (from the Sapkowski novels). More then awesome graphics are made by world famous Mr. Baginski (1st prize ..... for "Cathedral") and give the game revolutionary character indeed! We said "yes!" and recorded the song in May in Hertz Studio.- more on this story
