Killswitch Engage drummer Justin Foley has broken his collarbone in bicycle accident and the band has recruited As I Lay Dying drummer Jordan Mancino to fill in for him on their upcoming tours of Europe and Asia. The band hopes that Foley will have recovered enough to join them when they hit the road with Lamb of God on their upcoming North American tour which begins in late October. The band sent out statements from both Foley and Mancino. Foley had this to say, "I've never missed a show, and I'm devastated that I have to miss this tour. I'd like to apologize to the fans and everyone involved with KsE for the inconvenience I've caused. "I will do everything in my power to heal and return at full strength and as quickly as possible. In the meantime, I'm positive that Jordan will kill it and the band won't miss a beat without me. I'm honored to have such a monster player fill in. See you all very soon." Mancino adds, "I'm stoked to have this opportunity to help out Justin and my brothers in KsE. A few years back, Justin filled in for me on tour while I was dealing with the passing of my father. I'm now able to return the favor with a hope that Justin will heal from his injury quickly and effectively so he can get back out here and shred as he always does for the KsE fans!' The band had these words for fans, "Killswitch would like to thank our Asia and Europe fans in advance for understanding. As always, thank you so much for the support." You can find the North American dates here.

(Radio.com) Radio.com take a look at Metallica's incredibly influential debut album, 1983′s 'Kill 'Em All in the latest installment of their Not Fade Away series to celebrate the landmark metal album's 30th anniversary.Sometimes, it takes the rest of the world a while to catch up with what a handful of people know. Over the weekend, Metallica played a "secret" gig at the historic Spreckels Theatre in downtown San Diego, which seats about 1500. It was the hottest event of Comic-Con, an event that attracted well over 100,000 attendees to catch glimpses of the most anticipated sci-fi films and TV series. Among the super heroes and TV series and book adaptations was Metallica's 3D IMAX flick, Through The Never. But back in 1983, Comic-Con was just an event catering to mostly comic book fans, decades away from Hollywood treating it like a sci-fi Sundance. The idea that Metallica would play places several times larger than the Spreckels Theatre seemed like a pipe dream. Metallica has been such a huge band for so long, it's hard to remember how unlikely their success actually was, and how underground they were when they started. You have to go back. Way back: before their feature film, before they started their own festival, before their Lou Reed collaboration (can we just forget about that one, actually?), before their edition of Guitar Hero, before their Napster battle, before their tell-all documentary. In 1983, the face of hard rock was Def Leppard; their Pyromania album dominated the charts and MTV. They were a New Wave Of British Heavy Metal band, but with the help of producer Robert "Mutt" Lange, they became a polished rock band who didn't sound out of place on the radio next to the Police, Michael Jackson and Duran Duran. A much glammier strain of hard rock was piquing interests of radio programmers and magazine editors: Quiet Riot's Metal Health hit #1, Mötley Crüe's Shout At The Devil and Ratt's debut EP had just come out, and Van Halen were in-between Diver Down and 1984. Those bands were based in L.A., and L.A. was what was happening. But heavy metal has always been outsider music, and with the possible exception of Shout At The Devil, none of the above albums had much of an air of danger. A 382 miles north of L.A. in San Francisco, there was Metallica. They were not pretty. They did not sing ballads. Actually, frontman James Hetfield barely sung at all: he yelled and growled. Metallica weren't influenced by KISS or Slade; they preferred Venom and Mercyful Fate, and, above all, Motörhead. And along with bands like Anthrax, Exodus, Slayer, and Megadeth (led by exiled Metallica guitarist Dave Mustaine), they created a new counterculture within heavy metal. As drummer Lars Ulrich told authors Jon Wiederhorn and Katherine Turman in their excellent oral history of metal, Louder Than Hell, "In '83, '84, '85 the music scene in America was still dominated by the major labels. We were the big f*** you alternative to Loverboy and Journey and REO Speedwagon. At that time, we were pretty f***ing vocal about it, too. We made sure that everybody understood that we were the anti-Motley Crue." For guys who didn't want to dress like girls, sing like girls, or sing to girls (maybe because girls weren't interested), this was their band. Today, "Enter Sandman" is played at sporting events. If you knew who Metallica was in 1983, you were probably an outcast. The music was fast, loud, and brutal. more on this story

(Radio.com) Thirty Seconds To Mars want you to be in their new video, but it's going to cost you an arm or perhaps a leg. Jared Leto and the guys put out a casting call for their new lyric video on Tuesday (July 23) asking fans to get the words from their song, "Do Or Die," off their latest album LOVE, LUST, FAITH + DREAMS, tattooed somewhere on their body. Lyrics like, "I don't want to live a lie that I believe" or "Under the banner of heaven/ We dream out loud" or "I will never forget the moment, the moment." But getting the tattoo is just one step in a fan's quest to make an appearance in Thirty Seconds' new video. To be considered you must follow a few guidelines, which include making sure you used the highest resolution camera possible and that the footage is as still as it can be. They recommend you use a tripod. Fans are also required to say, "I am the Echelon" before the tattoo footage starts and tell the band why they're getting the tattoo. We imagine, "To be in this lyric video," is not the answer they're looking for here. While some fans went and visited their local tattoo artists the minute after they read the post, others are calling the band irresponsible for asking fans to deface themselves all to earn a spot in a music video. more on this story

(hennemusic) Last week, Rob Zombie guitarist John 5 leaked the news that the rocker is filming his current run of concerts for an upcoming live DVD release, and now Zombie is talking about the project."[Doing a concert DVD] always seemed like a huge nuisance, truthfully," Zombie tells Q103 Albany. "We had a live record and that took a million years to do. And a live DVD, for some reason to me, always seems like a nuisance, because after the show is done, I don't care. I don't want to relive it. I mean, a certain member of the band films every show and wants to watch it immediately after the show. And it aggravates the f**k out of me. Who gives a sh*t? The show is over, I don't care. I never wanna hear about it again, I never wanna see it again. Like, I never watch anything — a TV show I've been on; I don't care. Once it's done, it's done. But I figured at least once we should film it." Zombie is currently on the road headlining the 2013 Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival; the shows are to promote his latest album, "Venomous Rat Regeneration Vendor." "We've had so many big crazy stage shows over the last many, many years," he explains, "And we never filmed anything with [Rob's former band] White Zombie back then. I mean, there's little clips here and there, like [footage from] Brazilian television or something…" more on this story

"What a legacy he's left us. Even so, the concert was most enjoyable for us and the atmosphere was electric." Nobs, who founded the world-renowned Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland, suffered a fall while practising cross-country skiing during the Christmas holidays, and passed away on January 10th, 2013 at the age of 76. Nobs earned himself a mention as "funky Claude", who rescues children in Deep Purple's 1972 classic "Smoke On The Water". (Classic Rock) Trent Reznor admits upcoming Nine Inch Nails album Hesitation Marks isn't quite the all-guns-blazing work of his earlier years but that doesn't mean he has nothing to say.The reactivated NIN work has two main inspirations. For the music he looked back at his 1994 album The Downward Spiral; and for the festival stage shows he borrowed from Talking Heads concert movie Stop Making Sense. Regarding The Downward Spiral, Reznor tells the New York Times: "I felt very aware that it's 20 years later. I know that guy and I feel for him. I don't resent him; I don't miss him. But how would things feel on the other side of that now, in a much more stable life place, mentally and physically, and with a new family?" He describes Hesitation Marks as "sparse" and "minimal," adding: "It's hard for me to do that. I've realised that if I have 100 tracks, I'll use 110 tracks. This was really about economy. It was just a weird puzzle of grooves. "It didn't dawn on me until I was almost done that I don't really even raise my voice on this album that much. The mechanism of screaming choruses doesn't exist here. And that wasn't by design." more on this story

(Gibson) Rarely do two six-string giants stand toe-to-toe for an entire album. The 1973 release Love Devotion Surrender marked one of those rare full-disc encounters. The album sold a stunning half-million copies following its July release and captured both John McLaughlin and Carlos Santana at the height of their powers, backed by members of their respective bands at the time — the historic line-ups of both Santana and the Mahavishnu Orchestra.Intended as a tribute to fellow instrumental genius and spiritual seeker John Coltrane, the album held two Coltrane tunes, two McLaughlin songs and the traditional gospel tune "Let Us Go Into the House of the Lord." Four decades later this material, cut in sessions during October 1972 and March 1973, still stands the test of decades thanks to its interstellar playing. The album occurred in large part due to the direct inspiration of guru Sri Chinmoy, who both Santana and McLaughlin followed. It also marked a search for musical stability for the two artists. Santana was searching for new directions, with the expanded jams of Santana III now an obvious precursor to 1972's more jazz oriented Caravanserai. At the same time, the original powerhouse membership of McLaughlin's Mahavishnu Orchestra was splintering, even as the group reached the height of its popularity playing defiantly loud, experimental and ambitious music. To get an earful of how Santana's and McLaughlin's playing styles differed and meshed, listen to Love Devotion Surrender's "A Love Supreme," one of the set's Coltrane compositions. Both are playing electric guitar at a superbly high level, trading phrases, with Santana panned hard left and McLaughlin hard right. At the time, Santana had recently switched from the SG he favored at Woodstock and on his earlier albums to Les Paul Standards and Les Paul Customs. With Mahavishnu, McLaughlin was mostly seen with a black Les Paul Custom or his double-neck EDS-1275 blasting through a 100-watt Marshall head. Another Coltrane track, "Naima," finds both playing acoustic guitar, a direction that McLaughlin would take much further in his explorations of traditional Indian music with the group Shakti, where he played a specially designed acoustic guitar with a scalloped fretboard and drone strings. "The Life Devine" also borrows from "A Love Supreme" for its theme and gives Santana free reign as he alternates sprays of rippling, serrated notes with long single tones that he bends and holds into feedback, including one that clocks in at more than 30 seconds. McLaughlin's showcase is "Let Us Go Into the House of the Lord," although some critics have said that his arrangement borrows extensively from organist Lonnie Liston Smith's, which the latter developed while working with Coltrane disciple Pharoah Sanders. But McLaughlin's playing is a tour-de-force of ferocity and power, tension and release, with his notes creating an aural psychedelic tapestry that attempts to be nothing less than a sonic portal to the spiritual world. More including a stream of a song from the album.

(Gibson) For more than 20 years, from 1971 till 1992, Duane Allman's famous 1959 Cherry Burst Les Paul was played, cared for, and cherished by one man: Joe Marshall. Duane befriended Marshall in late 1966, when the Allman Joys were based in St. Louis. Duane and Gregg often subsequently stayed with Marshall at his parents' home whenever the band was in town. The friendship between Duane and Joe was singular and special, but it also exemplified the loyalty Duane demonstrated—and inspired—toward those closest to him. Marshall's ex-wife Christine recalls that, in the years following Duane's death, the Cherry Burst served as "a connect with Duane.""I remember one occasion where Joe left the guitar in the car overnight," she says. "It was secluded, so there was no danger of it being stolen, but it got a little cold out. The next day, when Joe realized what he had done, he ran out brought the guitar inside. For 20 minutes he kept wiping the guitar, almost as if to warm it. As he rubbed polish on it he spoke to it, or to Duane, saying he was sorry about the mishap and would never let it happen again. That was the only time I observed him letting his feelings about the guitar be known. He never left it outside again." Today, Marshall suffers from a health condition that makes speaking difficult. Some of his responses to the questions below, therefore, were compiled from remembrances he shared with family and close friends. Other commentary was gathered from memories he either wrote down himself or expressed in a previously recorded interview. What emerges from Marshall's fond recollections is not only the tremendous regard he had for Duane, but, by inference, a portrait of the degree of devotion Duane felt toward those he considered friends. As regards the '59 Cherry Burst, Marshall ultimately presented it to Duane's daughter, Galadrielle, in accordance with an informal understanding and a love for Duane. Below are Marshall's remarkable remembrances of the man who came to be known as Skydog. How did you first meet Duane?: A friend and I first met the band—back when they were the Allman Joys-- at a place called Pepe's A Go-Go, in St. Louis. This was in November of 1966. We were passing by and heard them playing The Beatles' "Drive My Car." We peeked through an opening in the drapes and saw this young guy playing guitar. His hair was nearly down to his shoulders, and he was rocking back and forth as he played. When they took a break we met the band outside, and they invited us up to their apartment above the nightclub. What was their live set like?: Well, we were too young to go inside the club, but Duane took care of that. He said they weren't 21, either, and told us to come on and follow them. We obediently marched in behind them and sat down. They took the stage and before the set began, Gregg dedicated the next group of tunes to their "new friends from St. Louis." Then they started playing stuff by The Yardbirds, The Animals, The Byrds, the Stones and some blues tunes we'd never heard. It was as if we had been struck by lightning. More.
