Sammy Hagar has once again addressed the idea of reuniting with Van Halen, but unlike the sentiment he expressed earlier this year that he would be open to the idea, he seems to have now closed the door on the possibility in a new interview with Rolling Stone. Hagar was discussing the special guests on his forthcoming album 'Sammy Hagar and Friends' and was asked about any big name stars that he wanted to be on the effort but were left off. In a follow-up question he was asked about the idea of a duet with David Lee Roth. He answered that question and he expressed his overall feelings about Van Halen. Here is that section of the interview: "It's so hard! Because, probably, if he came to me, f**k yeah. I'll do anything. But to go to him and put myself in that vulnerable position, I would get probably the wisest f**king crack that ever came out of his mouth. I don't think Dave wants to sing with me. I don't think Dave wants to be in the same room with me, to be honest with you. I don't know if I intimidate him or if I piss him off or if he just flat don't like me, or if he's afraid of me. I don't know what it is, but he and I do not get together. We tried. I gave it every shot I had on that tour. And I could care less. I mean, I'm totally over the guy. "As a matter of fact, the whole idea of Van Halen people ask me all the time, 'What if Eddie called you up and asked you to be back in that?' I just hope he doesn't do that. I'm so past it, and I'm so happy and proud of what we did, I wouldn't want to tarnish it again like that '04 tour. And now what they're doing, acting like I was never in that band, just playing all that early material . . . How can they do that? "But Dave can't sing it, so what the f**k. It is what it is, and I'd just as soon let it be. Let them finish it off in their own way, and whatever happens, it's all good. I would love to be friends with those guys. Michael Anthony is one of my dearest friends, and I don't see why Ed and Al shouldn't be that, someday, in our lives. But until then, it's all fine. "I don't want to go backwards anymore. At my age, I have a hard enough time rehearsing and playing those old songs at a rehearsal. And I certainly can't go back and listen to them. I just want to keep moving forward, and I'm so anxious to play my new songs in the set that the thought of going back and playing with a band that hasn't recorded since 1994 or something like that ewww. That sounds painful to me. "You don't want to go back and re-tarnish. Van Halen was so great and is so special for the time that they had their reign, that to leave that alone they're smart, in one sense, in that they don't do a lot. When they do, everybody's horny again: 'Oh sh*t, I got to go see it again!' I'm proud of being in Van Halen. I really am. I'm really proud of that time in my life. It was great sh*t, man." See who else he wanted on the album and why Metallica frontman James Hetfield took a pass here.

(Gibson) They'd talked about doing it, and for a while it looked like it wasn't going to happen, but Megadeth and former Metallica bass player Jason Newsted finally shared the stage on the final night of the touring Gigantour festival. (Radio.com) Country singer and songwriter Chris Stapleton has thrown down the gauntlet. In a note published on his Facebook page, he responds to recent comments Tom Petty made about contemporary country music by suggesting that Petty "put [his] money where [his] mouth is in a tangible way." And he's even offering to help. This past May, Petty called current country music "bad rock with a fiddle." Then this past week, he told Rolling Stone that, to him, contemporary country "reminds me of rock in the middle Eighties where it became incredibly generic and relied on videos." In the same interview, however, Petty also admitted: "I don't want to rail on about country because I don't really know much about it." Stapleton, then, thinks it's high time Petty was schooled. "Your recent comments lead me to believe you see room for improvement in modern country music," writes Stapleton. "So, in the interest of making Country music less "sh*tty" (your words), I suggest a collaboration." Stapleton isn't just bluffinghe's actually a person Petty could almost certainly learn from. A veteran songwriter, he's penned hits for such superstars as Kenny Chesney, George Strait, Tim McGraw, Brad Paisley, Vince Gill, and Darius Rucker, among many others. He's also worked in bands such as GRAMMY-nominated alt-country favorites the Steeldrivers and Southern rockers the Jompson Brothers. Stapleton is also now gaining traction for his own new country single, the powerful "What Are You Listening To?," which is easily among the freshest songs to come out of Nashville in ages. Watch the promotional video which includes comments from Stapleton and his producer, Tony Brown here and read Stapleton's full statement.

(Radio.com) Lorde hasn't even released a proper album yet, but she's already reached No. 1. The 16-year-old singer from New Zealand, whose real name is Ella Yelich-O'Conner, owns the top slot on the Alternative Songs chart this week with her song "Royals" off her EP, The Love Club. According to Billboard, she's the first female solo artist to do since Tracy Bonham hit No. 1 with her song "Mother Mother" 17 years ago. Yeah, the last time this happened, Lorde wasn't even born yet. "It's beyond my wildest dreams," Lorde recently told Radio.com regarding the popularity of "Royals." With a hit single already under her belt, Lorde is looking toward the release of her debut album, True Heroine, which Universal announced today (Aug. 12) will be released Sept. 30. Serosia have announced that they will be hitting the road with Sevendust for a series of North American dates this fall in support of their latest album, "Variables." The tour will be kicking off on September 18th in Las Vegas, NV at the Hard Rock Live and will be concluding on October 10th in Wilmington, NC at Ziggy's By The Sea. Serosia had this to say about the trek, "For us, this tour is a stepping stone for Serosia to be exposed to a much broader audience and to display our vision of the future of rock music. We are looking forward to connecting with all the fans along the way." Drummer Anthony D'Agata says fans that watch the show are in for a treat as they promise to deliver "an actual show! Not just four dudes standing around playing meaningless repeated choruses, wearing all the newest fashion crazes. "The end result/payoff of all of our efforts is the live show. We are intense and REAL. No choreographed stage moves, just us letting the music speak through our bodies. If there was a single word that could describe a Serosia show it would be, ENERGY." For potential fans that are not familiar with the band, lead singer Lucas D'Agata offers this description, "The best way to describe our sound is expressive and meaningful," he explains. "We are not a love song band, nor do we care about how hard you can party or how many chicks you think you can score. Musically, we are aggressive yet delicate, with a strong sense of detail and vision." As for the band's unusual name, D'Agata explains "We were looking to create a word, rather than use something already in existence. It seemed to fit the original and organic feel of the music better that way. After a bit of brainstorming, Derek concocted SEROSIA." more on this story

(Classic Rock) Trent Reznor remembers being given "shamanish advice" by David Bowie when Nine Inch Nails were touring with the pop-rock icon and Reznor was at the height of his addiction issues. Now he's cleaned up his act, and getting set to tour new NIN album Hesitation Marks, he appreciated Bowie's lesson all the more. Reznor tells the Guardian: "When we toured with Bowie, this was the Bowie that had come out the other side and was happily married. I was nearing the peak of my addiction, and his role to me was kind of mentor, big brother, friend and also he'd give me kind of shamanish advice. "He was playing everything from his Outside album and he said: 'You guys are going to destroy us on stage because we're not playing anything anybody wants to hear. Nobody really wants to hear this new album. What they want to hear is The Jean Genie and all the hits but I don't have it in me to do that now.' "I thought, 'That's kind of dumb on one hand.' Then I thought: 'To build a persona or a sound, and it's not broken and worn out, then throw it out and try something new? Man, it takes balls to do that. Would I ever have the courage to do that, or would I do careers and expectations and fitting in?'" more on this story

(The Blues Valerie June jokes she was aiming to "balanced out the murder ballad situation" by recording her track Shotgun on recent album Pushing Against A Stone. She's usually inspired by different singing voices heard in her head but that song, which tells the story of a woman killing her man because he's about to leave her, came about in an entirely different way. June tells NPR: "I met PJ Harvey when I was in England, and the first thing I do when I meet a songwriter I admire is to ask them how do they receive songs. "She told me, 'I don't really hear voices. I have once, but I really see images, and I write what I see.' When I was writing Shotgun, it's one of the first songs that's come to me as an image. "I was seeing this field, this prairie in the middle of America; the wheat was over-my-head high, almost, and it was blowing back and forth. There was this old house, like a haunted house, with a screen door flapping in the wind." More.

(Gibson) 1993 doesn't seem all that far away to me. But when you stop and think about it, a lot has happened in the world of rock music over the past two decades. Twenty years ago the glam rock acts of the eighties were desperately trying to hold on as the spotlight moved towards Seattle and the bands associated with grunge rock. Music was shifting from light-hearted hair-metal, to introspective music by bands like Pearl Jam, and Nirvana. Here are several huge tracks from 1993. Lenny Kravitz - "Are You Gonna Go My Way": Lenny Kravitz had been building a steady following with his first two releases, but it was with his third album Are You Gonna Go My Way that he became one of the biggest rock acts on the planet. The title track, which was written by Kravitz, and his long-time guitarist Craig Ross, reached number 4 on the charts in the UK. "Are You Gonna Go My Way" has become one of Kravitz' biggest hits and is a must at all his concerts Nirvana - "Heart-Shaped Box": "Heart-Shaped Box" was the first release from what was to become Nirvana's last studio album, In Utero. The band was under pressure to follow up the hugely successful Nevermind; an album which basically set the tone for a whole new generation of band's. Courtney Love has said that Kurt Cobain would lock himself in the closet while working on the riff to "Heart-Shaped Box." The song's name was apparently inspired by an actual heart shaped box that Cobain had gotten from Love. Aerosmith - "Livin' On The Edge": Aerosmith released their 11th album, Get A Grip, in 1993. The album was a huge success, producing several massive hits, like the ballad trio "Cryin'," "Amazing," and "Crazy." But the big rocker from the album was "Livin' On The Edge." This was when MTV still played music, and Aerosmith put a lot of effort in to making over-the-top videos to accompany the singles. Stone Temple Pilots - "Plush": Although Stone Temple Pilots released their debut album Core in 1992, the single that would make them a household name, "Plush," was released in 1993. The song, which is characterized by its slow rock-groove by the DeLeo brothers and drummer Eric Kretz was a huge hit for the band. The slow riffing in the song make it a great tune for beginners to learn on acoustic guitar.Soul Asylum - "Runaway Train": When Soul Asylum reached international fame thanks to the song "Runaway Train" in 1993, it wasn't an overnight success for the band. Having formed in Minneapolis in 1983, the band had released five albums before hitting the big time with Grave Dancers Union. The band's singer David Pirner started dating Winona Ryder, and was even featured in the nineties drama-comedy Reality Bites. Since then Soul Asylum has sort of faded back in to obscurity. They still tour and release new music, but it is hard to imagine them ever returning to the success of 1993. See more songs that had an impact in 1993.
