Day in Rock Report for 12/04/2012
Lamb Of God frontman Randy Blythe have been indicted on manslaughter charges in the Czech Republic for the death of a fan who died two weeks after being allegedly injured at the band's concert in Prague in 2010. The band's manager Larry Mazer issued the following statement in response to the indictment: "After a three month investigation, the prosecutor in the Czech Republic has decided to move forward with an indictment of Randy Blythe on the charge of manslaughter with intent to cause bodily harm. Obviously, we intend to fight vigorously against these charges as we feel that in no way did Randy intend to cause bodily harm on the young fan who subsequently died from injuries sustained at the show. As he has stated previously, Randy intends to go to Prague to defend himself at trial."While it is a tragedy that a Lamb of God fan died following a performance by the group, in no way do I feel that Randy did anything improper that led to the young man's injuries and subsequent death. The price of a ticket to a show does not entitle audience members access to a band's stage. In the years since the murder on stage of Dimebag Darrell Abbott, performers of all genres have had to become more guarded while performing in response to the dangers presented by fans trying to become part of the performance. We believe that Randy responded professionally to the numerous amount of fans rushing the stage that day, a number of them captured on videos that have been posted on the internet. We have testimony from the venue operator that acknowledges lax security and an improper barricade being used that evening. Numerous testimonies from fans also were contradictory as to the actions of the multiple fans that tried to access the stage. "At this point, all that the band, myself, and our lawyers can do is to present a defense and try to convince the panel of judges who will hear the case that Randy is innocent of all charges and that his name and reputation need to be cleared and that he be permitted to carry on with his life and career always mindful that a fan passed away after a Lamb of God performance."

(hennemusic) Following the 2007 Led Zeppelin reunion concert at London's 02 Arena, fans anticipated that Zeppelin would carry on with drummer Jason Bonham behind the kit in place of his late father, John. All reports indicate that Robert Plant was the lone hold-out preventing Zeppelin from moving forward, opting instead to concentrate on his solo work and his then-new project with Alison Krauss. In a new interview with 98.7 The Gater in West Palm Beach, Bonham discussed the situation. "Robert and I spoke very long and hard about this," Jason explained. "And there's other reasons, and I respect him for that. He told me." "I'll share one thing he said," continued Bonham. "'It doesn't matter how great you are on drums, Jason, I love you to bits and you play absolutely amazing. But John was the drummer in Led Zeppelin and John was part of me, Jimmy and John Paul. We shared something very, very special.' He said 'I struggle sometimes just thinking about trying to create some magic again. He's not there. He was a very, very dear friend of mine that he said 'I miss every day.'" Listen to the interview here.

Landmarq have released a new studio album, 'Entertaining Angels' which was produced and mixed by keyboardist Mike Varty.Vocalist Tracy Hitchings had this to say about the effort, "All of the lyrics I have written for this album, starting with 'Entertaining Angels', were born of my spiritual beliefs. Other lyrics I penned had that same concept, just different stories that got reshaped as I was overcoming Cancer with a very unconventional method as part of the belief in reshaping my life and helping me rid my nemesis. In particular, 'Glowing - Part 1 & 2' is a testament to that and was an amazing and cathartic experience. Writing lyrics and vocal arranging on this album has been an amazing journey and healing process in my life, which has completely changed from the one I once lived." Says Tracy, "'Entertaining Angels' is rich in backing vocals, the arrangements of which were so important in order to give the warmth and brightness that was not quite as present in our previous work. I so loved arranging to the backdrop of Steve's and Uwe's music, which overall has been given the life-force of Mike Varty's production work. This has created a more accessible and maturer sound without losing the concept flavor. Both the cello work of ELO's Hugh McDowell and the sultry saxophone of Laurent Hunziker has provided the icing on the cake!" more on this story

Today Cellophane Flowers guitarist Ian Sumner tells us about the song "The Promise" from their debut album 'Staring At The World,' which was released digitally this week. Here is the story:Some songs arrive fully formed, this one came together like a jigsaw puzzle. I was messing around on the keyboard and came up with what is now the guitar riff that opens the song. Fra started strumming on the acoustic. We tried to give it a disco feel, but we just couldn't get it to work and we almost left it behind right then. But I got sacked from the keyboards (yet again
) and played tremolo guitar along to the acoustic and a whiskey rhythm and we got a really good vibe going, kind of David Lynch meets Chris Isaak, with Fra scatting these short, punctuated nonsense verses over the top. We sometimes play a live acoustic version that sounds a bit like that. At this stage, it had slowed down to about half the speed it is now. That's when the chorus was written it took about two weeks to convince Fra to sing it because it was really poppy, which was somewhat at odds with the rest of the song at this stage. Because of the vibe, it needed some sleazy dark lyrics. Sex, booze and gambling. The news was full of the latest corruption, banking or political scandal tearing the UK falling apart (OK, it could have been any day in any country over the last five years), so the theme emerged of the powers that be gambling with our futures they win and we lose, we lose and they win. Fra's scatting lent itself to writing some really dark and punchy words, the story kind of wrote itself even though we ended up losing half the singing and half the story in the verses to keep it sparse the remnants of the original verse are still there in the third verse with that ghostly refrain that Fra does. It then became obvious that we needed to make this a driving song again, who wants to relax while being screwed over? So Nick and Luca sped it up and came up with that great driving rhythm. It still had something missing, but there was enough of something there to take it onto the recording studio where we'd already started work on the album. This was the only track we took in unfinished and was the most fun to record, we were still creating as we lay it down and we had no idea if it would make the cut or not. We ended up not using about five tracks that were recorded. We played it to Dave Allen, our producer, he recorded a rough take and two minutes later added that sequencer keyboard sound. It instantly came together and is now probably the most natural sounding song on the album. And now everyone is saying it's a homage to Siouxsie - it's a homage to Lynch! The Promise is one of our favourite live tracks, even bigger and louder, and it's actually the only one we play to a click so we can get the sequencer going. Hearing is believing. Now that you know the story behind the song, listen for yourself here and learn more about the band and the album right here!

(hennemusic) Led Zeppelin members Robert Plant, Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones made a rare television appearance Monday night on The Late Show with David Letterman. At one point, Letterman asked if the guys had considered carrying on following the 1980 death of their drummer, John Bonham. "No," said Page. "The fact was that we had the records out and then we'd put the songs into the set; it was almost like another beginning, a second wind for the songs, because they were changing every night with the improvisation we were putting in. There was no way with the amount of work and mutation that had gone on with those songs that we could say to another drummer, 'well, can you learn this bit and learn that bit'; it just wouldn't work." (hennemusic) The Cult have released a video for the Salem remix of their track "Elemental Light," from the band's latest effort, "Choice Of Weapon."When singer Ian Astbury had the idea for Salem to do the remix, he reached out to Salem as an admirer, using an e-mail he found on and EP he had. The band responded and chose "Elemental Light", which resulted in an ethereal, beat-driven version of the song. Ian then called in the cinematic prowess of director/acclaimed fine artist Kostas Seremetis to create a visual element for the remix, and the result is more short film than music video. "The sentiment of this film captures the loss of wilderness, and a generation trying to make sense of the trash heap they have inherited," Astbury says of the project. "It evokes nature versus man, that struggle [and] desire to control nature and ultimately death." Watch the video here.
