(Gibson) Metallica rarely allow the use of their songs in movies, but the metal band digs a new independent feature called Hesher so much, they've granted the filmmakers use of some of the band's music.Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who plays the lead role, recently explained he based much of his character's performance on late Metallica bass player Cliff Burton, who died when Metallica's tour bus crashed during a tour in Sweden in 1986. Gordon-Levitt was shocked when Metallica recognized the similarities without giving them prior warning. "They dug the movie. It was a real honor and I took a lot of inspiration for this character from the basis of some of their early albums, this guy named Cliff Burton, who played on Master of Puppets and Ride the Lightning," Gordon-Levitt said, reports Blabbermouth.net. "And when the band saw it, they were like, 'You know what?! He reminds us of Cliff,' and we didn't even tell them that's what we were going for. And they let us use their songs and I was actually moved because I grew up headbanging to Metallica." Movie co-star Rainn Wilson of The Office added to how Metallica's music enhanced the film, calling Metallica, "The Beatles of heavy metal." more on this story

(Gibson) After a five-year hiatus, System of a Down played the first show of their reunion tour this week at Rexall Place in Edmonton, Alberta. The concert, played in front of 14,000 fans, was the kick-off of their international tour, which will culminate in a headlining performance at the U.K.'s Download Festival in June.Drummer John Dolmayan is opening up about the band's time off, explaining that while the break enabled members to pursue solo projects (Scars on Broadway, Indicator), those side shows were no substitute for playing in System of a Down. "I'm not opposed to side projects and stuff, but ultimately this is our band," the drummer told Straight.com. "This is what people are interested in, what people want to hear, and this is what I want to play. I really enjoyed doing the Scars album and touring with Scars, but Scars is Scars. Today Brandan from Anchored tells us about their new single "Last Night" from their recent album "Listen To This". Here is the story:I remember writing Last Night like it was yesterday. It was the last song I wrote for the album "Listen to This" and on the "Last Night" of the writing sessions. That's where I got the title and then developed the story around the name. The song is about meeting a girl at a bar the night before but not just as cut and dry as that. Our video for the song captures the deeper meaning. In the dating world you have millions of different options but I chose to pick the final two. For example, you meet two different people on the same night and you don't know what baggage they have hidden in their back pocket if any at all. It's the ol saying "do you turn right or left'. In this case one girl likes to go on walks in the park, going out for ice cream, wants to start a family etc. The other girl likes to party, and do so in every place the other girl likes the brady bunch route. Kids aren't in her picture and doing shots and going wild is. Now, neither are bad depending on what you want. To each their own. It's kind of split down the middle. Some guys might want the more tame chick, and others might just want the "bad girl". In the video you can see both options in plain sight. Now you never find out who the guy chooses but that's simply because I leave it up to you and yours to pick which one gets "singled out" haha. There are some lines of the song that remind me of my past dating times. I was more into the party and good times at first. Lines like "I got out of bed and shook my head, forgot every single word I said" is pretty self explanatory and happened a few times haha. You can get wrapped up in it as well, as in the line "the next day but the same old scene". After all that I was lucky enough to find my one and "she's got a heart that's naked, so tough that I can't break it", "look what she's done to me, I've told everyone." haha The heart that's naked just means open. I think my favorite line in the song is "when I closed my eyes she was long gone", simply because it's so true and happens every night somewhere in the world. Mostly to girls that get taken advantage of but it happens to guys as well. You meet somewhere, have some drinks, hear the right things, end up back at your place or theirs, do some #$%@^&*, pass out, and wake up alone. They get what they want and then are out of there. Obviously that's not the person you want or maybe it is on some mornings after a bottle of jager and a case of beer hahaa. So to those of you out there in the dating world
here's your theme song
good luck! and thanx for taking the time to read this. Hearing is believing. Now that you know the story behind the song, listen for yourself and learn more about the album right here!

Eagle Rock will release Rory Gallagher's lost 1978 studio album as a special 2-CD set called Notes from San Francisco, next Tuesday May 17. Here is the background: The story goes that Jimi Hendrix was once asked what it was like to be the greatest guitarist in the world, to which he replied, "I don't know, go ask Rory Gallagher!" Rory Gallagher (1948-1995) is simply one of the all-time guitar greats. Slash, The Edge, Brian May, Johnny Marr, Janick Gers, Ritchie Blackmore, Glenn Tipton and Vivian Campbell have all said it. Since practically inventing the Power Trio format in Taste (both Cream and Taste debuted in 1966), Gallagher's music has stood the test of time and he's as popular now as he ever was, his influence gargantuan. The story of Rory's lost San Francisco album actually starts in Japan. In November 1977, after a grueling six-month world tour, the band flew straight from their last show in Japan to San Francisco to begin working on a new album with famed American producer Elliot Mazer (who worked on Neil Young's Harvest, Big Brother & The Holding Company's Cheap Thrills and The Band's The Last Waltz). Mazer recalls the sessions grew "tense," as Gallagher thought the mixing process "too complicated." By the end of January 1978, he had shelved the whole record and broke up his band of the past five years. more on this story

Phish: Live In Utica Box Set will feature 2-DVD's and 2-CD's and will be released nationwide on May 24th. The box set presents three hours of Phish in an intimate venue. Here is the synopsis: On October 20, 2010 Phish played their first ever show in Utica in the heart of the Mohawk Valley. Utica Memorial Auditorium is a hockey arena with a capacity of about 5,700 and a design very similar to another round room and favorite Empire State Phish venue, Madison Square Garden. Utica was the smallest venue on Phish's fall tour and the atmosphere was charged with electricity - the music was swinging, inspired and transcendent with a crowd that rose to the occasion. One clever fan even went so far as to craft a "Guyutica" sign that no doubt helped shape the night's events. more on this story

On this day in 1970, The world premiere of The Beatles film Let it Be took place in New York City. Gibson takes a look back: Following the sessions for the "White Album," which produced legendary music but also found tensions rising to an all-time high, The Beatles planned to get back to their roots on their next recording. As it turned out, the not always smooth experience would be filmed for a documentary titled Let it Be, which made its world premiere on this day in 1970.For the new album, Paul McCartney's idea was to leave behind all of the Sgt. Pepper-style studio tricks and make music that was stripped-down and relatively straightforward to play live. The plan was that the new album would be recorded as a live performance, and not in the studio. At this point, the band hadn't toured in two and a half years and McCartney liked the idea of going back on the road. John Lennon, George Harrison and Ringo Starr were less keen on that notion, so the plan became for The Beatles to play a single concert perhaps in London, or on an ocean liner or in a Roman amphitheater in Africa. Rehearsals began on January 2, 1969 with no concrete plans in place. But, before those sessions started, Dennis O'Dell, the head of Apple Films, suggested that the rehearsals be filmed for a television documentary that could serve as a companion piece to the live concert/album. To make filming easier, The Beatles set up camp at London's Twickenham Film Studios under the watchful eye of two cameras and director Michael Lindsay-Hogg (who had previously worked with the band on promotional films for "Paperback Writer," "Revolution" and other songs). more on this story
