Megadeth's Dave Mustaine Collapses in Russia
[Update] A quick follow up to this story from last week. Apparently, the story about Dave Mustaine's kidney trouble was based on inaccurate information, which sometimes happens with trying to report on news stories with little or conflicting information, but we now know that he did not collapse and wasn't hospitalized. Our news partner at Rock News Desk has issues a follow-up article clearing up the errors. We, as we are sure that the editors at RND, are just happy to learn that Dave is doing ok and his condition wasn't as serious as first assumed and knowing RND editor Martin Kielty and having worked with him, we know that this wasn't intentional or done for any ill intention. Yes, some publications operate that way, but Martin, like antiMusic do our best to bring you the best information we have available without any other agenda. You can read RND's follow up article here.

(Rock News Desk) Dave Mustaine has apologized to fans in Russia after Megadeth only managed to play a six-song set in St Petersburg on Wednesday – but he's revealed doctors told him he shouldn't have played at all.

The thrash icon collapsed before the European Carnage tour show with Slayer, and was found to be suffering the effects of a kidney stone. Medical experts wanted to send him to hospital immediately, but Mustaine insisted on playing at least a short show.

"Two hours before the show I started to feel like I had a hernia, or I'd been hit in the groin. I told my tour manager I needed a doctor and it might be in my best interest to cancel the show – and I rarely cancel shows," He explains. "After 45 minutes of prayer and sweating like a dog, I was told to pee for the doctors. They explained there was blood, and gave me an IV, an analgesic and an anti-inflammatory injection. The next hour is blurry. But I woke up and David Ellefson was holding my hand and praying over me. more on this story

Ex Manager Predicts Guns N' Roses Reunion
(Rock AAA) Former Guns N' Roses manager Alan Niven has laughed off suggestions the original line-up will reunite for a special appearance at next year's Superbowl but he has insisted they will eventually put their differences aside and return to the stage together. And in keeping with tradition he says any reformation of the original five members of the group once dubbed the "most dangerous band in the world" would have to be a global event.

In a RockAAA exclusive he said: "Forget it – the Superbowl is an absurd circumstance. It would be better to do a pay per view and play a full set 'Live from Ground Zero' when the World Trade Centre rises up from the ashes.

"That's truly Phoenix like – resurrection and resilience expressed in a relevant circumstance – now that would be cool. And if Axl started packing now he might make the stage on time." more on this story

Metallica and Iron Maiden Score Top Metal Songs Of All Time
Gibson concludes their countdown of the Top 50 Metal Songs of All Time today with Black Sabbath, Metallica and Iron Maiden dominating the Top 10. Gibson also presented the Readers Top 25 Metal Songs Poll Results. The No. 1s from Gibson and their readers are below:

Reader's No 1). "Hallowed Be Thy Name," Iron Maiden: Iron Maiden are the kings of the end-of-the-album-side, eight-minute epic and – with apologies to "Rime of the Ancient Mariner," "Fear of the Dark" and a few others – they've never done it better than on this Number of the Beast monster. From the initial bell tolling to the rush of the full-band entrance around the one-minute mark and the enthralling riff that follows, the song never ceases to build. Just as the lyrical character's anticipation and terror escalates on his walk to the gallows, so builds the power of the track. By the end of the song, as Bruce Dickinson belts "Yeah! Yeah! Yeah! Hallowed Be Thy Name!" the listener is in full-out headbanging frenzy. With winding, weaving, harmonizing twin solos from Adrian Smith and Dave Murray, and thunderous backing from bestial bassist Steve Harris and drummer Clive Burr, the song is, perhaps, the perfect distillation of the unmatchable Iron Maiden formula. – Michael Wright - Read the full Readers Poll list here.

Gibson's No. 1) "Master of Puppets," Metallica: Metallica were already high on the heavy metal watch list with Kill 'em All and Ride the Lightning, but 1986's Master of Puppets was the ultimate statement of intent, as much a call to arms for metalheads everywhere as it was a dire warning of the enslaving power of drug abuse. The song's razor-sharp intro riff sets up the perfect headbanging tempo in the chugging verses, while it's every teenage metal fan's sacred rite of passage to scream out "Master! Master!" at the top of their lungs to this song (preferably at a Metallica concert, but at the very least from a car window). The breakdown and harmony line are balanced by a rare James Hetfield solo (with Hetfield revealing a surprisingly bluesy, haunting and emotional lead style), a return to the harmony, then a blazing Kirk Hammett solo. By the end of the song, it's obvious that metal would never be the same. – Peter Hodgson

Incubus Finish Comeback Album
(Gibson) Incubus have finished work on their seventh studio album, according to a post on the band's fansite, Incubus-online-view.com. Incubus manager Steve Rennie delivered the news.

"Album number six is in the can," Rennie posted, apparently forgetting to count one of the band's previous albums. "I picked up my copy of the record last night at Henson Studios [in Hollywood]."

The manager went on to describe the release as, "nothing like its predecessors. Quintessential Incubus, but like no Incubus record before it." more on this story

Steven Tyler Forget To Ask Aerosmith About American Idol Appearance
(Rock AAA) And the saga continues……. It would appear Steven Tyler has just unwittingly destroyed the on-going peace negotiations around the Aerosmith camp.

Some time ago, RockAAA reported that Tyler and band mate Joe Perry had kissed and made up after stresses surrounding Tyler's American Idol work. Then normally placid Tom Hamilton re-ignited things, followed by claims that Aerosmith would actually APPEAR on the show. Apparently this is news to Idol-hating Perry when he told the Boston Herald: "I don't know anything about it. No one's said a word to me."

Absent minded Tyler then admitted that it may have slipped his mind to mention it... "I want to be honest about this and I don't want to get myself in trouble because I haven't asked the guys yet, (but) I'm sure they will." more on this story

Included in the set list were such Bowie classics as "Space Oddity," "Moonage Daydream" and "All the Young Dudes," as well as then-new songs like "The Hearts Filthy Lesson" and "Little Wonder." more on this story

Stone Temple Brothers Despite Problems
(Rock News Desk) Stone Temple Pilots guitarist Dean DeLeo says the band's music is worth all the tolerance he's had to show over Scott Weiland's weird ways. Almost all of their problems, from cancelled tours to police investigations, addiction issues to rehab time, have been down to their singer. But DeLeo insists they're family – although he was glad of the break when they split up in 2003.

The guitarist tells the New Zealand Herald: "If there was an award given out for patience and compassion I'd have a mantel full of them. But I've been in this band 20 years, and if I allow myself to get bent over and angry, and lost in that bulls*** world of anger, who's the idiot?

"Regardless of what you hear about what happens, the four of us are brothers. We grew up together. We're all different human beings and we all have different things that float our boat." more on this story

Why Anthrax's Scott Ian Will Miss Some Shows
Anthrax guitarist Scott Ian has issued a statement to fans to explain why he will be missing some upcoming Anthrax shows:

I know there's been a lot of rhetoric out there regarding upcoming Anthrax shows, Big 4 and otherwise. I've been debating on whether or not to make a public statement about this as it really pertains to my personal life and I generally like to keep that personal. Because this is affecting my band life, I feel like you, my friends, deserve to hear from me personally.

I will be playing the Big 4 show April 23 in Indio, CA s well as the shows in Manila, Bangkok, and Japan that will follow the Indio show. I won't be playing the shows scheduled from July 2 - 16 in Europe and the UK. Melvin Sparks RIP
(Gibson) Melvin Sparks, the legendary acid jazz guitarist, has died of heart failure at his home in Mt. Vernon, New York. He was 64.

Sparks first surfaced in the '60s and '70s as a soul-jazz guitarist (famously backing Lou Donaldson on the funk-jazz classics "Everything I Do Gonna Be Funky," "Hot Dog," "Donkey Walk" and "The Caterpillar.") and later played a key part on the acid jazz movement of the '90s.

Jambands.com quotes Sparks' friend Annabel Lukins on the guitarists' acid jazz influence: "As the acid jazz style he helped pioneer enjoyed a revival in the '90s, its new generation reached out to Sparks with heartfelt reverence and the guitarist found appreciative new fans in the audiences of Galactic, The Greyboy Allstars, Karl Denson's Tiny Universe, Derek Trucks and Robert Walter's 20th Congress." more on this story

Jeff Beck's Ten Dollar Guitar Album?
(Rock News Desk) Jeff Beck has vowed to record an album with a ten-dollar guitar just to prove how easy modern effects units have made things.

"I played a 1959 Gibson, which was loaned to me by the manufacturer because I don't own one myself. The character and tone of it, without distortion, is the something you can't get out of any other guitar," Beck tells MusicRadar. "I don't understand players who get their hands on such a great instrument then crank it up and distort it through a massive amp. If you're going to do that you might as well chuck away the Gibson and play any old thing.

"Some day I'll make a whole album with a ten-dollar guitar just to prove what you can achieve with a cheap axe and a box of tricks. But if you've got a precision instrument you should treat it with respect, and allow its strengths to come to the fore." He isn't the only guitar god who isn't impressed with today's guitarists

Syd Barrett's First Love Wasn't Music
(Gibson) According to his sister, Pink Floyd founder Syd Barrett saw himself as a painter, not a musician. Yahoo News reports that Rosemary Breen spoke at an exhibition of her brother's works and said: "He was firstly an artist and secondly a musician. If ever he was asked what he did, the reaction would always be 'I'm an artist,' never 'I'm a musician.'"

Barrett formed Pink Floyd in 1965 along with Roger Waters, Nick Mason and Richard Wright. He quit the band after three years, becoming famous for his reclusive lifestyle. "He never ever understood celebrity," Breen said. "He never sought it and he didn't want it. It was just a complete mystery to him why people wanted to see him.

"He was an artist who had got sidetracked half way through his life into playing music, which he'd always enjoyed as a hobby and then came back to art. He thought he was the same as everybody else: he didn't see anything special about himself." more on this story

Bon Jovi Idol
(hennemusic) James Durbin brought the rock to American Idol again this week, with Wednesday's performance of a classic Bon Jovi track.

The show's theme was built around contestants singing songs from the year they were born; in Durbin's case, that's 1989. James pulled out Bon Jovi's "I'll Be There For You".

Steven Tyler wants Durbin to keep bringing the heavy, though, warning him "don't get too 'Pop-y' on me." When more discussion followed, Durbin mentioned Tyler's band had some good stuff in '89, but that he "didn't want to spoil the Aerosmith until the finale," prompting Steven to reply, "You save it and I'll come up and sing it with you."
