(hennemusic) The first Van Halen album with David Lee Roth in 27 years has at least one fan: guitarist Mark Tremonti of Alter Bridge and Creed. Tremonti says he witnessed a live performance by Eddie, Alex and Wolfgang Van Halen of the full new album at Eddie's 5150 studios. In a new interview with Austria's Mulatschag TV, Mark was asked about his band friendship with VH bassist Wolfgang Van Halen. "We played with Van Halen years and years ago at Madison Square Garden and Palace in Detroit," said Tremonti. "The first time I saw Wolfgang, he was just a little
probably five-year-old kid or six-year-old kid.Eddie, [VH] that day, gave me one of his guitars, so I got to know Eddie. "Then years went by and Wolfgang ended up being a fan of Alter Bridge, so we got to know him through Alter Bridge," he continued. "And Wolfgang invited us to go see soundcheck when Van Halen did a tour a couple of years ago, and we were the only in there, so it was quite a treat. And then recently, I was in Los Angeles and Wolfgang invited me to his Dad's house and I got to go to 5150 studios and watch Eddie and Alex and Wolfgang play their new record from front to back. So I was one of the only people who have heard the new Van Halen. It was incredible." more on this story

(Rock News Desk) Foo Fighters mainman Dave Grohl says the main reason the band's tour riders are full of specific catering instructions is to take care of their crew. They've become known for their comedy riders, written by tour manager Gus Brandt. The latest edition includes ten pages of line drawing for promoters to colour in, with the advice: "Pencils work best, remember to stay outside the lines; originality, creativity and pure sarcasm are what we're looking for; and no one likes a straight-A student." A word-square, when solved, reveals the secret message "Don't forget the bacon," a nod to Metallica's rider which asks for the meat to be available at every meal. "That's Gus' personality and sense of humor. He's a wicked smarts, and after the last rider got so much positive attention we were all very proud someone got it," Grohl tells Rolling Stone. "The first idea for this one was to make it look like a laminated waffle house menu, with suggested servings and sh*t like that. Deep Purple fans mark your calendars for June 28th as that's the day Eagle Rock will release Phoenix Rising, a two-hour-plus revelatory documentary including 30 minutes of never-before-seen (not even on bootleg) onstage footage from Japan. Phoenix Rising will be released on DVD, Blu-ray, and in a special two-disc DVD/CD package. The release is cause for celebration amongst Purple fans due to the rarity of material. Extensive interviews with keyboardist Jon Lord and bassist Glenn Hughes tell the tale of a band caught by circumstance into one of its most controversial, extreme and exciting eras of its long career. Ian Gillan and Roger Glover were gone. A young unknown singer by the name of David Coverdale was recruited as was bassist Hughes. The results were the albums Burn and Stormbringer (both released in 1974). But then Ritchie Blackmore left the band. Against all odds, they rocked on, recruiting Tommy Bolin (from Zephyr and The James Gang). The album Come Taste The Band (1975) documents the short-lived Bolin era, an era that all came crashing down when the band announced in July of 1976 that it was breaking up. By December, Bolin would be dead due to a heroin overdose. Nine years of silence would ensue. The never-before-seen 30 minutes, "Rises Over Japan," has the Coverdale/Lord/Bolin/Hughes/Paice lineup delivering the goods in 1976 on eight songs: "Burn," "Getting Tighter," "Love Child," "Smoke On The Water," "Lazy," "Homeward Strut," "You Keep On Moving" and "Stormbringer." (The double-disc package contains these eight songs on CD.) This segment is some of the only video footage that showcases Tommy Bolin performing in Deep Purple. more on this story

(Gibson) A set of drawings by Sir Paul McCartney, which were expected to fetch more than $40,000 at auction, will not be hitting the auction block after all, BBC News has reported. The drawings, which were done by McCartney in the early '70s as prototypes for a part-animated film, were being sold by the daughter of animator Eric Wylam, who died in 1997. Maggie Thornton, Wylam's daughter, said the drawings have been in her family for 40 years. "My father was given a pile of scrap paper covered in rough drawings and I always believed they belonged to my father," she said. On the eve of the sale, however, attorneys stepped in and asserted the drawings were, in fact, the property of McCartney. "The lawyers say they're still Paul McCartney's property, as the film was made by his company, MPL Communications," said Chris Albury, a representative of Dominic Winter auctioneers. "As such,[according to the attorneys], any work done by Paul or the team working on the film should have been returned to MPL or Paul at the end of its usage." more on this story
