A new album featuring twelve previously unreleased tracks that Ronnie James Dio recorded in 1971 will be released this October. Here is the official word with the details:

Described as a "Rock/Honky Tonk/Blues band," a forthcoming release, 'And Before Elf…There Were Elves,' will prove that Ronnie could easily handle other rock-related styles.

Released on October 11th via the Niji Entertainment Group, 'And Before Elf' will feature twelve previously unreleased tracks (all from 1971), comprised of both live in the studio and live on stage tracks. more on this story

Blink-182 Break Up Was Really Stupid
(Rock News Desk) Blink-182 frontman Tom DeLonge says the band had to split up because it had become a machine which was controlling its members – and they'd got to a point where they hated each other without any real reason.

He left the three-piece in 2005, forcing them into hiatus, and it wasn't until the 2008 plane crash which nearly killed drummer Travis Barker the bandmates got talking again. The result was a reunion tour following by work on new album Neighborhoods, due out in September.

"The reason the band broke up was really stupid in the first place. It's not like we had sex with each others' wives – though for how bad we hated each other that should have been what happened," DeLonge tells the BBC. "We got so big that the machine running the band took over. We were burned out. We needed a break. But the machine won't let you do that.

"We'd stopped communicating with each other because the machine was so big." more on this story

Heavy Metal Declared An Addiction
(Rock News Desk) A heavy metal fan in Sweden is being paid income support to help pay for going to concerts – because psychologists agree he's addicted to music.

Roger Tullgren, 42, also has dispensation to miss work shifts to attend shows. And when he does appear in the Hassleholm restaurant which employs him as a kitchen porter, he's permitted to dress in the kind of clothes many of us would be sent home for wearing – and he's allowed to play his own music while he works.

"I've been trying for ten years to get this classified as a handicap. Finally three psychologists agreed I needed help to avoid being discriminated against," Father-of-two Tullgren tells The Local. "I have a form saying: 'Roger feels compelled to show his heavy metal style. This puts him in a difficult situation on the labour market. Therefore he needs financial help.' more on this story

Competition Between Slayer and Rob Zombie
(Gibson) Rob Zombie and Slayer are bringing Hell on Earth – or at least the Hell on Earth tour – to Canada. The musician and filmmaker recently spoke to QMI Agency about the tour and the friendly competition between the Slayer and Zombie camps.

"There's always that feeling [of competition]. Any band who walks onstage and doesn't care about that is... well, kind of weird," he said.

"I don't know how you couldn't. You want to go out there and be the best you can. At the same time, it's nice when the bands aren't trying to do the same thing. Our show is more theatrical than theirs, and obviously we don't play as fast and heavy as they do." more on this story

Jimi Hendrix Biopic Shot Down
Word spread a couple weeks back that OutKast singer Andre 3000 may land the role as Jimi Hendrix in a bio-pic about the iconic rock star. However, the Hendrix family sent out a statement dashing those hopes.... or at least hopes that this rumored film would be officially sanctioned. Here is what they said:

Various websites and media outlets have recently posted or printed pieces that indicate a feature length Jimi Hendrix biographical film is nearing production.

Experience Hendrix, LLC, the family-owned company entrusted with safeguard the legacy of Jimi Hendrix and administrator of the Jimi Hendrix music and publishing catalog has made it known many times in the past that no such film, were it to include original music or copyrights created by Jimi Hendrix, can be undertaken without its full participation. more on this story

Intense Fans Scare Machine Head's Robb Flynn
(Rock News Desk) Machine Head mainman Robb Flynn admits his fans can be so intense it sometimes scares him. And while he finds himself amazed at the sight of massive circle pits appearing while he plays, he's often concerned for the participants' safety.

The band recently returned to the live arena after completing work on upcoming album Unto the Locust, following nearly three years on the road promoting previous release The Blackening.

"People do some crazy sh*t. They carve our names into them, they jump off balconies. Sh*t like that is f**king scary to watch at times. We're like, 'Dude, be careful.'," Flynn tells The First 3 Songs. "When we were headlining the Wacken festival there was a point I was looking out into the audience and there was a circle pit about a quarter-mile wide. It was jawdropping to watch. more on this story

Queensryche Singer Insults Rock Fans
(Rock News Desk) Queensryche frontman Geoff Tate has slated rock and metal fans who don't like crossover genres are mentally lazy – and too much music in the genre comes out of "boneheaded" concepts.

The band recently released their thirteenth LP, Dedicated to Chaos; but Tate says it's not really an album, because the format is dead.

"It's more of a playlist than an album. You can put them in any order you want – alphabetically if it works for you," The singer tells BraveWords. "The world is moving away from the concept of an album. The whole music industry model has outlived its time." more on this story

"IV was recorded after touring for 2 and a half years with Mike Patton promoting our last album Another Sound Is Dying," explains bassist Stu Brooks. "It had been the longest duration of time in between releases. By the time we hit the studio, we were extremely hungry to put down the ideas. Most of the record was written while we were on the road. The Day The Buzzcocks Went Live
(Gibson) On this day in 1976, The Buzzcocks made their live debut supporting The Sex Pistols and Slaughter & The Dogs at The Lesser Free Trade Hall, Manchester. Gibson takes a look back: It was a gig that revolutionized the music scene in England. The new voice of their generation, the Sex Pistols, headed north to Manchester to play a show promoted by two young fans who had also put together their own band (inspired by the Pistols). The fans were Howard Devoto and Pete Shelley. Their band was The Buzzcocks and they made their live debut on this day in 1976.

Shelley and Devoto had discussed starting a band when they read a Sex Pistols review in NME. Shelley told Just Juice magazine: "They were doing a show in London. It said they did The Stooges' songs. It seemed like they were an exciting band to see. They seemed like a band that we thought we could be like. So that weekend, we borrowed a car and drove down to London. We found this group called the Sex Pistols and saw them playing. Their manager, Malcolm McLaren, was saying how he wanted to get gigs outside of London. We were like, 'Perhaps we can get you on at our college.'

"So we went back to the college and tried to get them a show, but no one was interested. We found out that we could hire a hall for 50 dollars a night. We thought if we sold tickets for a pound or $1.50, then we'd have right many people. We figured we could make it worth their while to come and play. So that's what we did. We said, 'Why don't you come up and we'll organize a gig here?' So we did. That's the first time that Sex Pistols played in Manchester." more on this story

Singled Out: Turbid North's The Hunter
Today Nick Forkel from Turbid North tells us about their single "The Hunter" from their latest album "Orogeny". Here is the story:

The song "The Hunter" came about after browsing through this book on Alaskan Survival stories. There was this short story that caught my attention about an old hunter who goes out on a hunt, and basically everything goes wrong for him. It takes place up in Alaska in the 1960's, at that time there were still people who hunted for their own food and that was how they survived. This guy goes out with one horse and supplies for a week or two, right at the end of fall to gather food for the long winter ahead. A terrible snow storm hits early, which he's not fully prepared for, and takes him off guard. He is stranded at his base camp for almost a month. The weather is so treacherous, he'd die if he tried to head back home. His horse quickly dies on him and he starts to run out of food fast but he keeps saying to himself, he's been here before, hell get out of it somehow. By the end of it you're really rooting for the guy to survive and make it back home. He finally musters up the courage to brave the weather, but eventually old man winter gets the best of him and he dies out there. It was an amazing read and inspired me to write a song based on that. The lyrics would tell the story and the music would be the soundtrack for the lyrics, like a soundtrack to a movie. Each riff goes with what's happening in the lyrics. I've never wrote music before with a theme in mind, so it was very fun coming up with stuff as the story goes on. That song really set the tone for the rest of the record.

Hearing is believing. Now that you know the story behind the song, listen for yourself right here!

. Rival Sons - Pressure & Time
Rival Sons take their inspiration primarily from the classic blues-rock sounds of the late 60s and early 70s and that it certainly an excellent era to draw from. Fortunately Rival Sons are not into mimicry. This one is meant to blow out cheap speakers and get the neighbors pounding on the wall.
