Coheed and Cambria Member Arrested For Attempted Armed Robbery With Fake Bomb
(Rock News Desk) Coheed and Cambria bassist Michael Todd has been arrested on suspicion of armed robbery after an incident in a US drugstore.

He's said to have entered a branch of the Waldgreens chain in Attleboro, Massachusetts, just before 1pm local time. It's reported he showed a pharmacist a message on his phone which claimed a bomb would be detonated if they didn't hand over an amount of prescription painkillers.

The thief left the premises with six bottles of pills and hired a cab. Police investigation suggested the vehicle in question had taken the suspect to the tour bus area of the Comcast Center in nearby Mansfield, where Coheed and Cambria were preparing to support Soundgarden. Police officers arrested him just minutes before the band were set to hit the stage. He was identified as the suspect by store staff, the cab driver and by CCTV footage. more on this story

Motorhead Star Dies
(Rock News Desk) Former Motorhead guitarist Wurzel has died of heart failure at the age of 61. Wurzel, real name Michael Burston, joined Lemmy's outfit in 1984 and appeared on nine albums before leaving in 1995.

He got his nickname while serving in the British Army as a corporal, when colleagues compared his appearance and character to kids' TV scarecrow Worzel Gummidge. He was already 35 years old and working as a builder when he sent a demo tape to Lemmy following the departure of Brian "Robbo" Robertson from the band. That led to an audition and the end of his pub-rock hobby.

When he arrived with fellow recruit Phil Campbell he extended Motorhead's lineup to four members. Their first public appearance together was on the cult alternative sitcom The Young Ones. His debut Motorhead album was 1984′s No Remorse for which he was lead co-writer for the single Killed By Death; and he contributed to Orgasmatron, Rock'n'Roll, No Sleep At All, The Birthday Party, 1916, March or Die, Bastards then finally Sacrifice in 1995. more on this story

Chickenfoot Preview New Album
(hennemusic) Chickenfoot fans are expecting the new single from the band's sophomore album, "Chickenfoot III," sometime this month…but the band has jump-started the anticipation by sharing a short tease of something from the new disc.

The :33 clip doesn't give up much – there's only a hint of Sammy Hagar's vocals to be heard – but the music sure does sound like the 'Foot.

Earlier this week, Chickenfoot announced a new, exclusive deal with eOne Music to distribute the record in North America. "Chickenfoot is one of the top-selling hard rock groups in the country," said eOne Music President Alan Grunblatt. "Everyone at eOne is thrilled to be working with them." Grab the preview here

Gene Simmons Says Problems With Shannon Tweed Not His Fault
(Rock News Desk) KISS mainman Gene Simmons admits things are still "touch and go" after long-time girlfriend Shannon Tweed finally said she'd had enough of his womanising. But he insists it's not his fault – because all men are the same.

The drama is being played out on his reality TV show, Gene Simmons Family Jewels, but has spilled into promo interviews for the series. Tweed finally snapped after finding a photo of him with some young women. When he told a reporter, "I don't know them," she said: "He means he doesn't know their names."

He's accepted he has to change his ways – but won't take the blame for behaving the way he has. "It's touch and go," Simmons tells Lehigh Valley Music. "Women are basically living with Jekyll and Hyde when it comes to men. Men are always on their best behavior for women so they don't see what's under a man's skin: testosterone. The tendency of guys is to do all kinds of stuff that pisses off women. When they peel off the outer skin of the snake, they get the snake – and that's not easy to take." more on this story

Megadeth The 13th
(Gibson) Dave Mustaine has spilled a few details on the new Megadeth album, starting with its superstitious title, 13 [Some reports have the title as TH1RT3EN].

The album was recorded in Mustaine's Vic's Garage studio in San Marcos, California with producer Johnny K (Sevendust, Disturbed, Staind). Artist John Lorenzi, who worked on United Abominations, Endgame and Warchest with the band, will provide the cover art.

As for the album title, Mustaine told Rock Radio DJ Tom Russell it was an auspicious number. "I started playing guitar at 13 and this is our 13th record and I was born on the 13th," he said. "As soon as I said I was going to call it 13, I started noticing 13 everywhere. They never used to have 13th floors in hotels, but now they have them again!" more on this story

The Rotted Guitarist Severs Fingertip in Accident
(Rock News Desk) The Rotted guitarist Tim Carley is recovering from an on tour accident which left him with a severed fingertip. He's expected to suffer no permanent injury after surgeons reconnected the damaged digit – and he's vowed to keep playing through the pain.

Carley was in hospital for six hours yesterday after a heavy flight case fell on him from a van. Doctors removed a fingernail, attended to fractured bones then re-attached the top of his finger.

The death metal musician jokes the accident has made him more like his idol, Black Sabbath icon Tony Iommi, who lost two fingertips at work in a sheet metal factory in 1966. more on this story

Ozzy Osbourne Thought Betty Ford Clinic Would Teach Him How To Drink
(Rock News Desk) Ozzy Osbourne has revealed he thought the Betty Ford Clinic was an exclusive drink and drugs den when he was persuaded to check in for treatment.

US President's wife and addiction treatment pioneer Ford died at the age of 93 last week, after dedicating her life to helping people deal with the kind of drink and drug issues which seriously affected her own life. Ozzy paid tribute to his 1984 stay at her clinic, telling the Sunday Mercury: "I phoned them and told them. 'I'm coming in.' The woman asked me, 'What drugs are you doing right now?'

"I told her, 'Booze and coke.' She said, 'I want you to keep doing them until you get here.'" he said. "Well, I thought, 'F**king hell – this is going to be a great place!' Sharon told me it was a club where they'd teach me to drink like a gentleman." more on this story

Def Leppard's Joe Elliott Granted Dying Father's Wish
(Rock News Desk) Def Leppard's tour manager has told how Joe Elliott only agreed to play the band's current tour because his dying father told him to – and the band knew Joe Senior was close to the end when they performed in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, last Tuesday.

The singer had wanted to postpone the band's upcoming US tour dates after his dad suffered a heart attack in April. But the man who had funded Def Lep's first recording session told him to get back to work.

Elliott and his mum were with Joe Senior when he died in a UK hospital last week. Long-time chief roadie and friend Malvin Mortimer says: "Joe's father, Joe Senior to all who knew him, suffered a significant heart attack in April. While he was in intensive care he had two more attacks. He was very low for a week or so." more on this story

Jimi Hendrix Biopic To Star OutKast Singer Andre 3000?
(Gibson) OutKast singer Andre 3000 is set to play the lead role in a forthcoming biopic of Jimi Hendrix…maybe. In a profile piece for Esquire, British actress Hayley Atwell divulged the news as a "possibility."

"Next up is possibly a Jimi Hendrix biopic — an independent film with Andrι 3000 from OutKast playing Jimi Hendrix," Atwell said. "But I don't know, really."

The OutKast singer, whose real name is Andrι Benjamin, has been lobbying for the Hendrix film since 2004. At that time, he told the New York Daily News he was fascinated by Hendrix's dual personality. "Jimi was wild onstage," he said. "Off-stage, he was really calm." more on this story

KISS Working on Heavier New Album
(Gibson) KISS guitarist Tommy Thayer says the band's next album is shaping up as more "riff-oriented" and slightly heavier than 2009's Sonic Boom. Speaking to Lehigh Valley, Pennsylvania's The Express-Times, Thayer also revealed that Gene Simmons, Paul Stanley and company have already cut eight songs for the forthcoming disc.

"It's going phenomenally," said Thayer. "We've been in the studio for several weeks. This is definitely some of the best stuff KISS has ever recorded."

Thayer, who still considers himself the "new guy" in the band, went on to say the album will mark another step in KISS's effort to recapture their vintage sound. "The idea [with Sonic Boom] was to create a classic KISS record going back to the roots of the early records, and really try and capture that vibe," he said. "I think we did and then some. On this record, we're taking that to the next step." more on this story

Diamond Head Star Joins Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth and Anthrax Jam (video)
(hennemusic) Metallica hit Sonisphere UK Friday night for the fourth installment of the current Big 4 European tour and the Big 4 finale featured a very special guest.

Setting up for another jam with members of fellow metal titans Megadeth, Slayer and Axthrax – James Hetfield asked the crowd, "Is there another band playing or something? What's all this extra gear? It's 'The Big Four Band,' does that sound like a good idea? Celebrating 30 years of Metallica, we invite Anthrax, Megadeth, Slayer and hopefully someone from Diamond Head to put the cherry on top."

"You see that guy, if it wasn't for Brian Tatler, there's a pretty good f**king chance none of us would be here tonight," Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich added while pointing at the Diamond Head guitarist, before the musicians kicked into a version of that band's song, "Am I Evil?" Muse in Space?
(Rock News Desk) Muse frontman Matt Bellamy wants to record a song or a video in space – but he's hoping he can persuade billionaire Richard Branson to foot the bill.

The richest man in the UK is thought to be worth over $4bn, so he could easily afford to cover the costs. Tickets on Virgin Galactic's planned flights cost $200,000 each, with a total of six seats on the SpaceShipTwo vehicle – and the band would need to book an entire flight to get their wish.

"We're trying to blag a free trip on it. I'm going to try to convince Richard to let us make a music video, or even record a song up there," Bellamy says. "I think that would be cool. Would I be scared? No, I think I'd be alright." more on this story

Styx Won't Consider Reunion With Dennis DeYoung
(Gibson) A Dennis DeYoung-Styx reunion might just be a "grand illusion," according to guitarist Tommy Shaw. The marriage of theatrical pianist DeYoung and arena rocking guitarists Shaw and James "J.Y." Young was always a rocky one, and its breakup was a mere eventuality. With the group (minus DeYoung) currently on tour with sound-alike singer Lawrence Gowan, Shaw says there is no reason to consider a reunion.

"I don't think [a reunion] is realistic," Shaw told Rolling Stone. "We tried it in 1996 and we realized what was true in 1983 was only more true in 1996. We'd just gone our separate ways. Rather than having a positive effect on each other, we have a very negative effect on each other. You only live once and you should be happy."

"In retrospect," he continued, "we weren't even happy working with each other in our heyday. We're just different people with different desires and different visions of how things should be. God, it was such an unhappy place. Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. We're crazy, but we're not insane." more on this story

AC/DC Fans Honor Bon Scott
(Gibson) An army of AC/DC fans went to the birthplace of late singer Bon Scott this weekend. They were celebrating what would have been Scott's 65th birthday at Bon Fest in Kirriemuir in Angus, Scotland (no, really!). Fans from around the globe paid tribute to the AC/DC frontman, who died in 1980 and was replaced by Brian Johnson.

Also in AC/DC news, a book by founding bass player Mark Evans will be released in November. Titled Dirty Deeds: My Life Inside/Outside AC/DC, the book tells the story of AC/DC's fearless climb to the top.

In the book, Evans writes: "The aggressive attitude that AC/DC had towards Australian bands continued when we shifted overseas. The world's bigger bands became our new targets….we saw a few of the so-called headline acts and straight away knew that we had nothing to fear." more on this story

Dave Grohl Says High Tech Studio Gear Ruined Today's Music
(Rock News Desk) Foo Fighters mainman and ex-Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl says drum machines are alright for pop music – but they have no place in rock'n'roll.

He believes other high-tech gadgets are destroying the feeling of recorded music, and doesn't think albums should be pixel-perfect.

"All that sh*t ruins music these days. Drum machines work for pop artists but when it comes to rock'n'roll, don't f**k with the human element," Grohl says. "I had favorite drummers because of their inconsistencies – modern production has robbed drummers of personality and it really pisses me off." more on this story

A.R. Rahman Talks Supergroup With Mick Jagger
(Gibson) Superstar Indian composer A.R. Rahman is a busy man. In addition to prepping for a July 10 performance at the Hollywood Bowl with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Slumdog Millionaire composer is preparing for the first release by his new band, SuperHeavy, featuring such (super-)heavy hitters as Joss Stone, Dave Stewart from Eurythmics, Damian Marley and—oh, yeah—Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger. Gibson India caught up with Rahman during his Hollywood Bowl rehearsals.

Can you tell us what's going on with SuperHeavy? The biggest thing now is our band SuperHeavy's single "Miracle Worker" is coming out on [July] 7th, and in India we also want to release one more song, called "Satyameva Jayate," that the band, all of us, have done together. And I'm very excited about it, too.

Can you tell us a bit about your upcoming performance at the Hollywood Bowl? This is a very special concert for us because, normally, when I do concerts and tours, we do all the movie songs and extravaganza kind of stuff. But the concept for this is all my theme music and all my instrumental music and to play it with [the] L.A. Philharmonic. So, a lot of people wanted this in a concert for a long time back in India, too, and we now are doing this here at the Hollywood Bowl. more on this story

Video of Sonisphere Tribute To Slipknot's Paul Gray
(RockAAA) Rock and metal fans fell into respectful silence at Sonisphere this weekend as festival organisers and Slipknot honored late bassist Paul Gray ahead of the band's first UK appearance since his death.

Thousands gathered at the Saturn stage at the appointed time and the entire festival site fell silent. Gray's bass, red jump suit and mask took centre stage and Corey Taylor and Shawn Crahan stood to the side together throughout.

The PA boomed out Slipknot's 'Vermilion Part 2' ahead of the remembrance. In a previous interview Corey Taylor explained the poignant idea behind the song, "The differences (between the two tracks) are subtle — 'Vermilion, Pt. 1′ is about the enrapturing, the buildup, the anticipation and the neurosis," says Taylor. "'Part 2′ is the aftermath, the pieces that have to be picked up later, and maybe the guilt of having lived through it." Watch video here

Elvis Guitarist James Burton Getting Hall of Fame Induction
(Gibson) Guitar legend James Burton, best known for his years backing Elvis Presley, will be inducted into the Delta Music Hall of Fame on Saturday, September 10. The Delta Music Hall of Fame honors rock 'n' roll and blues musicians from the Mississippi River Delta area.

Burton, who devotes much of this time to his foundation, is also working on an autobiography. He talked to boomercity.com about the project. "I'm doing a book – my life story. There's so many things that I could write about. I could do a whole book on Elvis and a whole book on Ricky [Nelson]. But I'm going to get my story out there and I think everyone is going to enjoy it."

Burton also talked about his longstanding friendship with Rolling Stone Keith Richards: "Yeah, Keith and I go back to 1964 – Shindig! I had a group called the Shindogs. Keith and The Rolling Stones came and they brought a singer that was on the show – Howlin' Wolf – and I was nominated to play guitar for Howlin' Wolf on the show. It was great."

"Keith and I have been friends forever," he continued. "He has been wonderful and has helped us with the foundation in all kinds of ways – like making donations. He's a very busy person; one of his goals and one of my goals is to play together on my show – the show we do here, the guitar festival. Of course, Keith and I have worked together on the Gram Parsons taping that we did up in Santa Barbara and in Universal City in California there.
