On this day in 1974, John Lennon was at #1 in the U.S. singles chart with "Whatever Gets You Through The Night." Elton John played on the session and made a deal with Lennon that if the song reached #1, Lennon would have to appear on stage live with Elton. Lennon kept his side of the deal and appeared live with Elton. They played three songs together: "I Saw Her Standing There," "Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds" and "Whatever Gets You Through the Night." Backstage after the concert, Lennon got back with Yoko Ono after a temporary split. And on this day in 1987, Former Clash drummer Topper Headon was jailed for 15 months at Maidstone Crown Court, England for supplying heroin to a man who later died. Linkin Park Tour
Linkin Park have announced the dates for their North American tour, which kicks off on January 20th in Sunrise, Florida.

Supporting Linkin Park on various dates on the cross continent trek are The Prodigy, Pendulum and Does It Offend You, Yeah?

The tour's set list combines the biggest hits of the band's career, as well as material from the new album, which has been described as a psychedelic journey that explores the conflict between technology and humanity. Lead vocalist Chester Bennington says, "The new songs work really well alongside the older stuff. Plus, there's a strong, powerful message to A Thousand Suns, and we've transferred that into the show. Our aim was that we're not just putting on a live performance, but something that's visually spectacular as well." - more on this story

Randy Rhoads Live Footage Unearthed
The Metal Den has unearthed and posted the holy grail for Randy Rhoads fans: Never Before Seen Live Footage!

Before he rocked the world with Ozzy Osbourne, late guitar great Randy Rhoads blazed it up with Quiet Riot. "Blizzard of Ozz" would ultimately be released on September 20, 1980 in the UK and on March 27, 1981 in the United States. "Blizzard of Ozz", considered one of heavy metal's greatest albums, has sold over 6,000,000 copies worldwide. - Check it out here

Steve Perry Retired, Not Looking for Journey Reunion
(Rock AAA) Rumors about singer Steve Perry rejoining Journey are untrue, RockAAA can confirm – and in fact, Perry has retired from performing.

The false story is believed to have surfaced after the Daily Star misused a quote from guitarist Neal Schon, who recently said: "He's no longer the lead singer – he walked out."

By adding speculation to the quote, the Star suggested Perry had asked to rejoin the band. But RockAAA has established that event did not take place. A spokesman for the singer says: "It's just not true. The story came from London, the home of tabloids – they make up stories every day. Steve is enjoying his retirement." - more on this story

Surprise Bruce Springsteen Bar Jam
(hennemusic) It's a Thursday night. You're enjoying a beverage in your local tavern, listening to a local band doin' their thing. Nothing special, right? Time and place. That's what it's all about, sometimes.

Ask the folks at Woody's Roadside Tavern in Farmingdale, New Jersey, and they'll tell ya how quickly things can change. Local band Timepiece are working through their set at Woody's last Thursday when the one, and only, Bruce Springsteen pops up on stage and joins them for the Wilson Pickett classic, "Mustang Sally."

It's actually no coincidence this happened – there is a connection here: Springsteen's brother-in-law, Mike Scialfa, is a member of Timepiece. - More including video here!

My Chemical Romance World Contamination Tour
(Gibson) My Chemical Romance have announced the itinerary for their spring tour, in support of their new album, according to Spin.com. Titled the World Contamination Tour, the journey begins April 1 in Portland, Oregon and ends May 24 in Phoenix, Arizona.

The new album comes a little bit sooner. Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys hits stores and online retailers next week.

Guitarist Ray Toro gave Spin a preview of what fans could expect from the new tour – including lots of color, in contrast to the band's darker aesthetics for The Black Parade tours. "It's going to be a celebration of color," Toro said. "The costumes for Black Parade were a restrictive military look. But what's cool about the Killjoys [the main characters of the new album] is that there's a lot more freedom and life, even in the way we dress. It looks cobbled together from different styles and it's really open and free." - more on this story

Motorhead Idol: What if Lemmy Was An X-Factor Judge?
(Rock AAA) Motorhead legend Lemmy would love to become a judge on TV gameshow The X-Factor – and he knows exactly what he'd tell contestants.

Big names have disagreed over Aerosmith singer Steven Tyler taking a similar role on US show American Idol. Slash and Kid Rock have both stated they think it's a bad move, while Kiss motormouth Gene Simmons is all in favor.

But Lemmy is clear on how he'd approach the job. He tells the Sun: "I'd do that alright. I'd tell the contestants to sing what they want. Some of them sing songs that are way out of their depth. They haven't got the range for them." - more on this story

Radiohead's New Album Plan Is To Have No Plan
(Gibson) Disputing rumors and reports that their new album is completed, Radiohead released a statement on the band's official blog, Dead Air Space.

Guitarist Jonny Greenwood responded to an article in a recent issue of Italy's Rolling Stone magazine. That article quoted the guitarist as saying the album includes 10 songs and that Radiohead will be touring soon.

In his post, Greenwood wrote, "I think this Italian writer has, either through over-enthusiasm, or frustration at all my non-committal answers, mistranslated me a little. In fact we haven't quite finished the album – in the studio at the moment – nor have we yet considered any touring. The plan is to have no plan until the record is finished... hope that's a little clearer!" -

Slash's Wife Suggested Fergie Bondage Video
(Rock AAA) Video scenes in which Black Eyes Peas singer Fergie drugs Slash, ties him to a bed then teases him with a knife were suggested by the guitar icon's wife.

The promo film for Beautiful Dangerous, taken from Slash's solo album, was ruled too explicit for standard release – but you can see it at the full story link.

And the ex-Guns n'Roses axeman says spouse Perla came up with most of it. Slash tells NME: "My wife told Fergie, 'You should tie him up and do all this stuff'. So she took my wife's word, and the next thing you know I'm tied to the bed." - more on this story

Deep Purple Legends Tribute Late Manager Tony Edwards
(Gibson) One time manager of Deep Purple, Tony Edwards, has died at the age of 78. Edwards managed the rock legends in the early days, from 1967 to 1976, and is credited with changing their name to Deep Purple from Roundabout.

Guitarist Ritchie Blackmore, who quit Deep Purple in 1975, said on his website Blackmoresnight.com: "With deepest respect - and with great sorrow - we honor Tony Edwards. Tony was the man behind the scenes for Deep Purple. He was instrumental to the existence and sustenance of the band and it's music from its inception to present day. Tony's insight and intuitiveness were unparalleled in the music business. He will be thought of often and missed greatly. Without Tony Edwards there would be no Deep Purple."
Similarly, Jon Lord, Deep Purple's keyboard player, said on his website, jonlord.org: "A few days ago – fittingly, on Remembrance Day – I lost a friend. He was my manager from 1968 to 1976, my daughter Sara's Godfather, and the man who was instrumental in helping me to realize, in 1969, the dream which defined my musical life – that of a 'Concerto for Group and Orchestra.'

Singled Out: Opensight
Today Ivan David from acclaimed Columbian hard-prog rockers Opensight tells us about "Deleted Scene" from their brand new EP "The Voice Of Nothing". Here is the story: Opensight's music always comes from unusual places, I always come up with songs trying to emulate something I've heard or seen in a movie soundtrack, a videogame or music outside of the rock/metal genre. Something sophisticated, with a dramatic vibe.

"Deleted Scene" is the most complex song on "The Voice of Nothing" and is a great example of it. I was listening to an old videogame soundtrack and laid down the verse riff which sounded heavy, so I came up with a clean version of the riff to place before the verse, in order to build anticipation and to get a violent contrast as soon as the verse started.

The intro of the song was inspired by movie soundtracks, the James Bond soundtracks in particular which use a lot of chromatic sequences that give a cool dramatic effect. The little clean guitar solo on top sounds a bit jazzy and it fits very well. I demoed it and realized I wanted an Ennio Morricone kind of guitar sound for the chords, since I'm a huge fan of the ambience created by those western soundtracks. When we were mixing the song in the studio I showed Nancy Sinatra's "Bang Bang" to Engineer/Producer Daniel Gongora and told him I wanted that kind of sound for the section (Not a very rock/metal kind of choice, hehe). I heard that song on the movie "Kill Bill" and always found Tarantino's approach very inspiring. I identify very much with his passion and his respect for influences.

The midsection of the song is an odd tempo riff that sounds massive thanks to the keyboards and the kind of chords I chose. It makes me think of something out of a war film, like theme song of the movie "Where Eagles Dare". Iron Maiden wrote a song about the movie and used the theme song to open their concerts way back (on the "World Piece Tour" I think). "Deleted Scene" has lyrics that deal with the bad times in your life that you want to forget about, so the name points to it right away and also serves as a reference to movies in general, which are a huge inspiration on the song and on Opensight's music overall.

So there's an Opensight song. Movie soundtracks, contrasts, a couple of high pitched riffs, some heaviness, introspective lyrics, clean passages here and there and some drama, but still catchy! At the end it doesn't sound like all the stuff I mentioned, I tried to emulate something and got a different result, and I love that!

Jackson Browne, Patti Smith, Taj Mahal, Keb' Mo' and More Tribute John Lennon
(Gibson) There have been numerous tributes to the life and work of John Lennon this year, in honor of what would have been his 70th birthday, but one of the largest and most musically ambitious took place recently at the Beacon Theater in New York, when the Theater Within organization hosted their 30th annual John Lennon Tribute Concert. The show brought together an estimable list of performers, including Jackson Browne, Patti Smith, Taj Mahal, Keb' Mo', Shelby Lynne, Martin Sexton, Aimee Mann, Joan Osborne and Cyndi Lauper.

Perhaps wisely, the performers generally avoided trying to perfectly replicate Lennon's unique style, instead adding their own spirited twists to the songs they covered. Taj Mahal turned "Come Together" into a gritty, blues shout-out, Smith performed "Strawberry Fields Forever" as elegiac poetry, and Browne played an acoustic, sweetly melodic version of "Revolution."

Smith added a particularly moving moment to the night, explaining that she and her late husband, MC5 guitarist Fred "Sonic" Smith, grieved together for Lennon when he was killed in 1980. When Fred Smith died in 1994, Patti Smith said she drew strength and inspiration from Yoko Ono's example. Smith then led the crowd in an energetic sing-along version of "Oh Yoko." - more on this story

The Action's Reg King Dead at 65
(Gibson) Reg King, the frontman for the influential '60s band The Action died of cancer last week, according to The Independent. He was 65.

King and his mod group have been praised by musicians including Paul Weller and Phil Collins. The Action based their sound off of American R&B, and formed in 1963, when they were known as The Boys. They won acclaim for their first single, "It Ain't Fair," in 1964 and also got the attention of Beatles producer George Martin. He signed the band (which also included Roger Powell, Alan "Bam" King, Mike "Ace" Evans and Peter Watson) to Parlophone records in 1965.

The Action had a number of hits with R&B covers in the mid-'60s, including "Land of a Thousand Dances" and "Baby You've Got It." The Queers Unleash New Album and Tour
The Queers have hit the road to support their brand new studio album titled Back to the Basement.

Recorded in Atlanta, this release offers up thirteen tracks of blistering punk rock. Joe Queer says, "Ben Weasel sequenced it, HogLog Rehab was on drums, Dangerous Dave on bass, and I was on guitar and mean vocals. We recorded it in about 23 hours from start to finish. That included writing a few songs in the vocal booth when we took a coffee break."

Joe says: "Back to the Basement is the best album we've done since I was on speedballs many years ago. It has songs about titf**king and knowing GG Allin. It's an instant classic, plus it's kind of catchy in places. We broke out Black Flag Damaged and listened to that and TV Party and wrote this album. The cd version includes White Minority by Black Flag actually. Stuff that in your pipe and smoke it you hipster punks." - more on this story

The Low Anthem Set New Album Release
Nonesuch have set a February 22nd release date for The Low Anthem's new self-produced album Smart Flesh.

The majority of Smart Flesh's eleven tracks were recorded in a cavernous, vacant pasta sauce factory in Central Falls, RI. Additional tracking was done in a Providence garage, dubbed the "gator pit." Mike Mogis (Bright Eyes, Monsters of Folk) mixed the record in Omaha with additional mixing by engineer Jesse Lauter (Elvis Perkins) in New York. The Low Anthem is four multi-instrumentalists - Ben Knox Miller, Jeff Prystowsky, Jocie Adams, and newest member Mat Davidson.

The band surveyed dozens of spaces for their portable recording studio. "We knew right away when we stepped into the factory. The space was really the main instrument for the whole record. The resonance was chilling," says Miller. "We were able to experiment with new recording techniques to capture the sound at different distances. Mics 100, even 200 feet away caught the sound barreling across the room." - more on this story

Viral Brian Eno
(Gibson) Even with all the labels Brian Eno has managed to accumulate over his long, praiseworthy career – musician, composer, arranger, producer, visual artist, ambient music pioneer – it still seems a little strange to find him in the roll of YouTube sensation. But a strong element of Eno's ethos has always been to confound expectations, and he seems to have done that with an interview video released online as part of a publicity campaign for his new album, Small Craft on a Milk Sea.

In the video, a relaxed though slightly bemused Eno is seen in his studio, where he is being questioned by a reporter from Pork magazine. Flash explains to Eno that the producer is the next "mega-star" to be interviewed in the mag's weekly "Talk to Pork" series. Flash presumably wants to talk up Eno's new album, but after bungling the title as "Milk Crate on a Small Sea" and talking over Eno's attempt to correct him, Flash asks rambling, wildly digressive questions that barely leave the increasingly agitated Eno time to respond.

The catch is that if one stares at the reporter hard enough, pictures him without his hipster glasses and neo-mop top wig, and takes into account the fact that Eno and Flash are never seen fully in frame together, one begins to suspect that Mr. Flash is actually an ex-synth player for Roxy Music – Mr. Eno himself. Eno, as Eno, proves to be a master of the comic deadpan when Flash hits him with such questions as "Is music really different now from when you got started in the 1930s?" - Check it out here

Richard Thompson Taps Harry Shearer for Cabaret of Souls
(Gibson) As a songwriter, master guitarist Richard Thompson has always seemed to take particular inspiration from the dark, the disquieting and the depressing. Now, in a new theater piece conceived and created by Thompson, he asks the audience to join him on an exploration of the land of the dead. In Cabaret of Souls, theatergoers are essentially witnesses to a musical reception held for the benefit of newly deceased souls.

The "Keeper of the Underworld" serves as an emcee, pulling sometimes reluctant, older souls from the darkness to entertain the new arrivals, and then adds his own musical critiques on the weakness and absurdity of humans. The piece gets its west coast premiere this Friday, November 19, in Los Angeles at UCLA's Royce Hall.

Of course, Thompson has often spiced his morbid musical themes with a dose of black humor, and humor's very much a part of Cabaret of Souls as well. That's made clear by the on-stage narrator of the show's events, Spinal Tap/Simpsons veteran Harry Shearer. Thompson will provide vocals and guitar-work, leading a group that includes vocalist Judith Owen, bassist David Piltch, percussionist Debra Dobkin, and multi-instrumentalist Pete Zorn. Thompson also composed orchestral backing for the piece, which will be performed by the Idyllwild Arts Academy Orchestra. - more on this story
