(HeadbangerNYC.com) A Manhattan federal judge ruled Thursday (February 25) that Ozzy Osbourne can proceed with his lawsuit against guitarist Tony Iommi over use of the Black Sabbath name.Ozzy filed a lawsuit against Iommi in May 2009, claiming that Iommi illegally took sole ownership of the band's name in a filing with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. Osbourne is suing Iommi for a 50 percent interest in the "Black Sabbath" trademark, along with a portion of Iommi's profits from use of the name. The Manhattan federal court suit also charges that Osbourne's "signature lead vocals" are largely responsible for the band's "extraordinary success," noting that its popularity plummeted during his absence from 1980 through 1996. [They seemed to do pretty well with Dio and continue to do so with him fronting Heaven and Hell]

Mudvayne are the latest band to drum-up publicity by producing a controversial video that was guaranteed to be banned by major video outlets. Here is the official announcement about the ban: Mudvayne continues to push the envelope with the video for their second single "Beautiful and Strange" off their self-titled album Mudvayne. "Beautiful and Strange" is directed by Frankie Nasso and is the latest installment of three conceptually linked videos that were filmed to promote the band's self-titled album. "Scream With Me", the first single off the album saw great success becoming #2 on the Hot Mainstream Rock Chart. With the release of the video for "Beautiful and Strange" came the unwillingness of networks, and media sources to play the video due to its disturbing and thought provoking imagery that is meant for mature audiences. The video contains sexually explicit acts that take place in a graveyard and some scenes that involve acts of sadism that is part of a storyline that is linked to the other two videos. The exact definition of the video is left to interpretation and flows beautifully with the other two videos that complete the concept. It has been banned from every outlet except for one; the only place where this video can be seen is on the social networking site vampirefreaks.com. Mudvayne has been praised for changing the landscape of metal music through their songwriting and now they continue to broaden that landscape with their provocative new video for "Beautiful and Strange". The song is extremely dynamic and is an example of the bands technical abilities as musicians. The release of the third and final video "Heard It All Before" is set to premiere next month.

Dovecote Records is elated to announce that they will be releasing the Cast Spells Bright Works and Baton EP on clear vinyl come May 4, 2010. Cast Spells is David Davison, lead singer of Maps & Atlases. This is the first time the EP will be available on wax and has been re-sequenced to include an extra track called "All Brass" which appeared on a split 7" with Good Old War. The vinyl pressing of Bright Works and Baton is limited to 500. Bright Works and Baton is available digitally and on CD via Cast Spells' record label, Sargent House. Driven by sonic experimentation, the avant-pop delivery of Cast Spells' debut EP, Bright Works and Baton points to the influence of artists such as Brian Eno, Bill Callahan and Cat Stevens but breathes quickly into the lungs of a new lyrical body. Davison and producer Jason Cupp charged the recording process with an ambitious immediacy. In seven days and with one microphone, 28 songs were born in the basement of Davison's childhood home. Pounding the notes of any instruments within reach, Davison and Cupp performed nearly the entire album themselves, often using the first take.

Tee Pee Records is very proud to announce the vinyl reissues of "Wild Wonderful Purgatory" and "Almost Heathen" from legendary stoner rock pioneers Karma To Burn. Both albums will be released on April 6th 2010 and will coincide with Karma To Burn's April 2010 UK / European Tour."Wild Wonderful Purgatory" and "Almost Heathen" will each come with a 10" vinyl of bonus material including demos from the first album, newly recorded versions of 20 and 30 and all new artwork by Alex Von Wielding. Karma to Burn's "Wild Wonderful Purgatory" can perhaps be seen more accurately as a modern take on the power trio approach of such groups as the Jimi Hendrix Experience, Cream, and Rush. With the spacy, almost psychedelic and experimental nature present, perhaps the first two fit better. However, the hard-edged metallic fury calls to mind more closely Rush's debut. These guys have such a great skill at creating dynamic melodies that you never really seem to notice that they have opted to forego the vocals altogether on this second release. This one is a great time, whether you are stoned or not.

UK label Tin Angel Records announces an April 27 U.S. release date for California, the new CD from singer/songwriter/guitarist Paul Curreri. Already released overseas, California has been generating rave reviews. California is Paul Curreri's first album in three years, the result of having to take off over 15 months when major throat surgery took him off the road and out of the recording studio. Prior to his surgery, Curreri had released four studio CDs and one live album in a span of five years. A noted producer, he's also helmed a number of albums in the last few years, including wife Devon Sproule's new CD, Don't Hurry for Heaven. At 13 tracks, California covers a lot of sonic ground. From the opening track's pounding piano drive, to the near uncomfortable honesty and simplicity of "I Can Never Return," Curreri fastballs a lot of sticky ideas at the wall. There's a fully improvised, fully belted, and fully unintelligible blues bash. Another number, "Off the Street, Onto The Road," opens with a phone conversation between Scott Joplin and Joseph Lamb. On the only track to feature a guest, Devon Sproule shows up for a gorgeous duet take on Michael Hurley's "Wildegeeses." Curreri even throat-sings at the tail of "I Can Hear The Future Calling." It's a damn blast, and as life-affirming as a Bob Marley album.

Codeine Velvet Club, the new musical project composed of The Fratellis' Jon Lawler and singer/songwriter Lou Hickey, will play their first-ever US shows this March. They are slated for five performances at this year's upcoming South By Southwest Music Conference in Austin, TX. Dates are below. Directly following their appearances at SXSW, the band will embark on a west coast tour in support of Canadian indie-pop band Metric. The tour kicks off March 21st in Seattle, WA and continues through March 26th in Los Angeles, CA. The collaboration began when Lawler, taking a break from whirlwind touring and recording with The Fratellis, teamed up with Hickey to work on a track - the jazzy, big-band duet titled "Vanity Kills" - for her record. The song inspired the duo to embark on a full-fledged project together. The resulting album features an elegant orchestral score written by Mick Cooke of Belle & Sebastian, backing vocals by the Gospel Truth Choir and strings parts recorded by renowned classical musicians, including legendary trumpeter Derek Watkins.
