the bird and the bee Take On Hall and Oates
the bird and the bee, the duo of singer Inara George and multi-instrumental/producer Greg Kurstin, are set to release Guiltless Pleasures Volume 1: A Tribute To Daryl Hall And John Oates, on EMI's Blue Note Records on March 23. Following up 2009's Ray Guns Are Not Just The Future, the acclaimed band's third full-length album is a love letter to famed "rock and soul" duo Hall & Oates that features eight classic covers along with one new original song "Heard It On The Radio."

As the no-nonsense album title implies, the bird and the bee's feelings about Hall & Oates aren't framed with a wink or a cocked eyebrow. Their love for this music is genuine. "There's definitely no irony," insists Kurstin. "They're great songwriters and these are great songs." Getting inside the songs only heightened their appreciation for the original recordings. "It was exciting to discover what an amazing singer Daryl Hall is," says George.

Kurstin is currently nominated for Producer of the Year at the 52nd Annual Grammy Awards for his work with the bird and the bee and Lily Allen's album It's Not You, It's Me. The awards will take place this Sunday, January 31 in Los Angeles.

Flatfoot 56 Set St. Paddy's Day Release
As Flatfoot 56 marks their 10th year as Chicago's most celebrated Celtic-punk rock outfit, the band has set this St. Patrick's Day—March 17, 2010—for the release of their new full-length album Black Thorn. Produced by Street Dogs' Johnny Rioux, Black Thorn will arrive from Flatfoot 56's new label home Old Shoe Records.

Led by spirited front man Tobin Bawinkel (Vocals/Guitar), along with brothers Justin (Drums) and Kyle (Bass), with multi-instrumentalist Eric McMahon (Bagpipes/Mandolin), FLATFOOT 56 is fueled by a sense of camaraderie that directly translates to their die-hard fans through passionate music and highly energetic live performances.

The forthcoming new album, Black Thorn, tightly packs the quartet's eclectic and driving musical charge into thirteen tracks that celebrate the pride of the working class and their Chicago roots. A collection of songs that delves into weighty thematic content, Tobin explains that the cohesive theme of Black Thorn is a fundamentally universal one. "Everyone goes through hardships, but you aren't alone. Punk rock is about community and brotherhood. This record is our contribution to that." As cathartic as it is ambitious, Black Thorn is an emphatic assault that remains vintage Flatfoot in its effortless combination of Celtic instrumentation and street corner punk rock. Bagpipes and mandolins remain just as vital as drums and guitars in defining Flatfoot's sound.

David Bowie's Live Reality Revisited
The most recent original full-length entries in the David Bowie catalog are his Reality studio album (released September 2003), and subsequent live DVD, A Reality Tour (October 2004), which presented his world tour of October 2003 through June 2004. A Reality Tour was the highest-grossing global tour of 2004 and one of the most critically acclaimed tours of Bowie's career. It was hailed as "Best Tour: #2" in the "Critics' Picks" section of Rolling Stone's "Music Awards 2003" poll (after Radiohead), and the magazine raved, "Bowie keeps finding new ways to seduce a crowd and make fans come back for more."

Now Bowie fans can rejoice over the news that A Reality Tour has finally been remastered as a double-CD. Sweetening the package are three bonus tracks performed on the tour but not included on the original DVD: "China Girl," "Breaking Glass" and "Fall Dog Bombs The Moon." The 33-song configuration will be available at all physical and digital retail outlets starting January 26, 2010 through ISO RECORDS and Columbia/Legacy, a division of Sony Music Entertainment.

To celebrate the CD release, the accompanying "A Reality Tour" concert film makes its Fuse broadcast premiere on January 26th (check local listings).

Living Sacrifice Week: Love Forgives
Metal legends Living Sacrifice return this week with, 'The Infinite Order,' their first album since regrouping in 2008. To celebrate the release singer / guitarist Bruce Fitzhugh will give us the inside story to five songs from the album. We conclude today with "Love Forgives". Here is Bruce with the story:

This tune is very different from most of the record. It is very straight forward with a driving, single kick beat. There is no double bass at all until the end of the song. Lance came up with the main music theme which is very melodic and has several guitar harmonies. I had the verse riff that is very driving and down picked.

Arthur, our bassist, wrote the lyrics and I edited them and worked out the phrasing. The lyrics were inspired by the restoration and healing that came after Arthur and his first wife divorced.

I Shalt Become Plan Next Album
A long-legendary name in black metal, I Shalt Become are currently working on a new studio album for Moribund Records, with the band slated to enter the studio next month.

As yet untitled, I Shalt Become's new album for Moribund will be their second full-length for the label (the band's cult Wanderings demo was reissued by the label in 2006, with 2008's Requiem the band's first post-retirement recording) and also the first to feature real, live drums.

Mainman S. Holliman reports, "Honestly, I'm not sure what I can say about it as it's genuinely unlike anything else I've heard," while drummer A. Scherer offers that it's "atmospheric, orchestral plague metal for those whom ride gallant on black steed from the foul, gaping maw of Hell itself to wage War on ignorant mortals" or just "really fking good." - more on this story

Katzenjammer Set U.S. Release
Norwegian all-female foursome Katzenjammer are set to release their debut album Le Pop in North America on May 4, 2010, with their new single "Tea With Cinnamon" out March 2.

Le Pop, which was produced by Kεre Westrheim and Mike Hartung (known for their work with notable Norwegian artists Marit Larsen and Superfamily), showcases the ladies eclectic blend of genres, which one Norwegian reviewer described as "a mix between Eastern European folk music, B-52s, the sisters Kate & Anna McGarrigle, seasick bluegrass, country blues and a carnival orchestra on the run." Le Pop not only earned Katzenjammer a nomination for "Newcomer of the Year" at the Norwegian Grammy Awards, but also the distinct honor of opening the show with their hit single "A Bar In Amsterdam."

The quartet first stormed the States with their circus of a live show in Austin at SXSW last year, where they commanded the attention of industry types and music lovers alike with their raucous set consisting of the rotation of up to 29 instruments on which that the four women are self-taught, including the tuba, the balalaika bass, drums, harmonica, piano, banjo, accordion, mandolin, guitar, melodica and trumpet. They also caught the attention of David Byrne, who invited them to play his artist-curated stage at 2009's Bonnaroo, alongside Santigold, the Dirty Projectors and Dave Byrne and Brian Eno, and ended their US run with a stop by Summerfest where they opened for Elvis Costello. -
