Day in Rock Report for 08/16/2010
The Day in Rock Digest for 8/16/10: Boston.com has this tidbit (based on the word on an unnamed source, so read with a pound of salt): Curious why Aerosmith and J. Geils didn't do a tune together at Fenway? It might have to do with a last-minute feud between the bands' famously demanding frontmen Steven Tyler and Peter Wolf. We're told Tyler didn't want Wolf to use the ramp that extended into the audience and told him so the night before the show. Axl Rose has apparently canceled all upcoming Guns N' Roses tour dates after a technical glitch caused another controversial late start gig this past weekend. Guns N' Roses played what was billed as their only North American tour date of the year on Friday but the crowd was upset after the band took to the stage after a two hour delay. Then on Sunday a post on Axl Rose's official Twitter account announced that the plug has been pulled on all future dates. The Twitter post from Sunday evening simply read, "All upcoming Guns N' Roses dates are officially cancelled. Please contact your place of purchase for any refunds." This would include the Reading and Leeds festival, Australian, UK and European dates.

Evergreen Terrace have issued a lengthy statement to give their side of the story about a fight that broke out at their show last Thursday (August 12th) in the Pittsburgh suburb of Cheswick where online claims had the band arrested for "beating up a girl". Here is the band's side of things: Because of the amount of attention that the 'ET fight' rumor has caused, we want to answer your questions and clear up what happened at our show on 8/12 in Cheswick, PA. We attempted to let these ridiculous comments pass and not to take part in the absurdity, but because the rumors continue-even if by only a small group of people - we think our fans deserve the truth. Craig and Jake, a crew member of the tour, (NOT Andrew) were sitting by a red car (not on it).A girl approached them and told them to get off her boyfriend's car. They told the girl they weren't on the car and to chill out. Craig asked where her boyfriend was. The boyfriend walked up and both parties began s*** talking. The girl dumped a beer on Craig and Jake and threw the beer can at them. Craig stood up. He and the boyfriend lunged at each other. The boyfriend tackled Craig to the ground causing Craig to land on his back. The boyfriend hit Craig 3 times, and the girl jumped in swinging. Craig was on his back, his arms up to block. Jake and witnesses pulled the boyfriend and the girl off. There was a large crowd of people by this time. The boyfriend sustained his injuries from someone else (not in the band) after being pulled off Craig. When Craig got up, the girl ran toward him again. Craig shoved her away and walked off. She did not fall on the ground from this action. Later Craig went back to the area to get his phone. The boyfriend apologized to Craig, said the whole thing was stupid and that the girl was drunk. Thirty minutes after the incident, Andrew (who was not at the fight by the car) approached the boyfriend, took his cigarette, and asked why he was starting s***. They exchanged words. Andrew blew smoke in the boyfriend's face, handed back the cigarette, and the boyfriend punched Andrew in the face, causing a cigarette burn on Andrew's cheek. Cops who were in plain view ran over and arrested the boyfriend for assault on Andrew. Ten minutes after the boyfriend's arrest, Andrew told the cops that he wasn't pressing charges on the boyfriend because he felt he had instigated the punch by blowing smoke in his face. The cops let the boyfriend go.

Will Aerosmith's Steven Tyler be hired as a new judge on American Idol? Apparently, he doesn't even know despite his bandmate Joe Perry saying, "We're told it's a done deal."When asked by an online tabloid if he would be appearing on American Idol, he responded, "You know
I don't know
they haven't called me yet. They've got to lay out the bread for me baby!" more. Tyler has previously only confirmed that an offer was made, but appeared to be leaning towards taking the gig, "I'm probably going to be a judge on 'American Idol.' I'm doing it. What do you think? I'm doing it." But the lack of contact from American Idol's producers doesn't necessarily mean he doesn't have the gig as one of the show's other judges who is largely rumored to be getting the axe hasn't been told of her fate yet.

Our friends over at the1stfive.com confirm everyone's worst fears about Jugalos: This past weekend the pop culture train wrecks of Tila Tequila and ICP's Juggalo fan base met head first and the results got ugly. According to a statement released by Tequila describing the event, "I went onstage and immediately, before I even got on stage, dudes were throwing huge stone rocks in my face, beer bottles that slit my eye open, almost burnt my hair
cuz they threw firecrackers on stage." She says the fans then grabbed literal sh*t from the porta potties to throw at her. CNN reports that Tequila was then chased by the crowd back to her trailer where the mob broke her trailer windows and the windows of her SUV before she was finally able to escape. However CNN has a comment from a performer at the fest, who wishes to remain anonymous in fear of "Juggalo retaliation", who says Tequila was taunting the crowd from the moment she got on stage.

The marriage of sweeping orchestral harmonies with rock 'n' roll's electricity led to global album sales in excess of 50 million, making ELO one of the biggest selling bands of the seventies and eighties. MGMT have gone public about the rumored collaboration with Paul McCartney. Gibson reports: It all started a few weeks ago, when Sir Paul McCartney mentioned that he was a massive fan of MGMT and said that he would love to work with the Brooklyn-based band. Since that time, the indie heroes have fielded questions as to the when's and where's of this titillating team-up. Singer Andrew VanWyngarden has now put those rumors to rest. Speaking to Spinner at Lollapalooza, VanWyngarden said, "We did play a show with him (McCartney) last summer at Fenway Park, which was really cool, but nothing has really come of the collaboration part of it. We still would really like to do that. We like Paul McCartney's songwriting abilities, his musical sensibilities. His bass playing is unreal. He is definitely my favorite bass player."

Welcome to Singled Out! where we ask artists to tell us the inside story of their latest single. Today Julia from Me Talk Pretty tells us about "Wake Up!" and "Brokenhearted" from their new EP "We Are Strangers". We now turn it over to Julia for the story:"Wake Up!" is the first single off our debut album We Are Strangers and is probably the song that has the most meaning to me and the band as a whole. "Wake Up!" was first introduced to the world as part of the soundtrack to EA Sports' NHL10. The song, which never passes unnoticed in any circumstances, was one of the most loved tracks on the game and we continue to get inundated with letters from fans asking for us to post the lyrics up on our website, or the story behind. "Wake up!" was written during some of the most difficult moments of my life and pays homage to the person I loved the most, the person who brought me to the United States to offer me a better life, but, unfortunately, never got to see me perform or even more, never got the chance to watch me reach the places that, she herself, never would have dreamed of. The person I speak of here would be my mother. She passed away unexpectedly 2 years ago and I was helpless. She never got the chance to be happy for or proud of me as I always imagined she would. The lyrics are a journey into our relationship, the struggles that we had together coming to a new country for a better/new life, and the moment when it all ended and the memories took over. In the beginning, I wasn't very open about what the song talks about as it was very fresh and hard to put it out there. However, over time, since it reached so many hearts, I felt like it would be OK to let people know the story behind it. In the video we've shot for "Wake Up!" I'm playing my mom's role as well as myself. I made her look glam, but she really was a simple woman with a huge heart. The video is in rotation on MTVU right now. The second song with a great story behind it is "Brokenhearted". Besides being the most challenging song to sing live, it was also written during challenging moments. It talks about jumping into a relationship before you're ready and not over the previous one. Not necessarily still in love, but more likely still confused. And so now you're into a new relationship and I'm assuming we're good to start it. I'm not aware of the hurt feelings and all of this baggage he's coming in with. Obviously he's not ready to truly fall in love. It happens so often that people get involved in a relationship just so that they can get over things that happened in the past one and they can't really commit to you in their heart. I find that somehow selfish. The main question in the song is: now that we kinda are together, could we make it work? Hearing is believing. Now that you know the story behind the songs, listen for yourself, check out the "Wake Up!" video and learn more about the EP

The Chicago native said that he's been looking for "clarity" in his music and cited some inspirations."I've been listening a lot to mid-'70s rock, like UFO, Rainbow and Queen, and from a production point of view, there's actually not a lot going on," he said. Hennemusic reports: Deep Purple's 1976 break-up gets the documentary treatment with "Gettin' Tighter: The Story Of Deep Purple Mark 4," set for release in early 2011. In '75, the revolving door that is/was Purple continued to spin EXIT: Ritchie Blackmore, who went on to form Rainbow - ENTER: hired gun Tommy Bolin, who had just left The James Gang and signed a solo deal. DPMK4 featured Bolin, David Coverdale, Glenn Hughes, Jon Lord and Ian Paice; the lineup was intact for just one album, 1975's "Come Taste The Band" - the band broke up following their 6-month tour to support the record amid a haze of drugs, death and despair. Decapitated's guitarist Vogg revealed to MetalSucks in a new interview that they are working on a new album. Here is that part of the exchange: Have you started writing the new album at all? I'm starting to write some riffs. I have some ideas. After this tour, I will start to write new material for real, for serious. There are too many shows and we don't have much time to write any new songs. I think in January we go to the studio and have four months of preproduction for the new material. I have a lot of ideas right now, I just have to take all these ideas together and [turn them into] a new record. It should be ready next year for sure. The new record should be ready in 2011. You're a band that's evolved its sound as time has gone on
I know that this band will always change. Every album we did was different than the one we did before. We are always looking for something new or something else. We don't want to be a band that wants to play the same all the time. We don't have to. For real artists [laughs], it should be like you're looking for something fresh all the time to not be boring and not stay in the same place all the time. I expect more changes for the new album and the recording.

Former Dismember/Carnage drummer Fred Estby has released some details for the forthcoming Necronaut self-titled full-length album including guest stars and tracklisting. But first some background info on the project: After more than 20 active years within the death metal scene, Estby needed to express his passion for different kinds of extreme music; a passion he's bore since his youth. In 2008, Estby started writing/recording material with the intention of utilizing one unique vocalist for each song. Dubbed Necronaut, the project would become a reality just one year later when the drummer began contacting the many talented metal musicians he had in mind. Necronaut's self-titled full-length is slated for release later this year via Regain Records. The cover was created by Chet Zar , known for his makeup effects for movies such as The Ring, Planet of the Apes and Darkman . NECRONAUT's approach is crude and dead simple a la early Bathory and Venom fused with Black Sabbath and Iron Maiden, but with an unorthodox, bass-heavy production that allows the album to stand out amongst its peers. The goal was primitive brute force, but because of the manner in which Estby chose to achieve it, he also managed to create an aura of pure malevolence that, prior to this album's creation, was likely difficult to imagine. This Wednesday Jets Overhead will premiere the video for their new single, "I Should Be Born," on Much More Music (http://muchmore.ca) in Canada and AOL's Spinner (http://www.spinner.com) in the U.S. Directed by Jeremy Lutter and Jets Overhead vocalist Antonia Freybe-Smith, much of the new video finds the singer immersed in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of British Columbia. Antonia vividly recalls shooting the video that early April day, "It was a gorgeous evening and I love being in the water. I have some very strong memories (both as a kid and now as an adult) of sitting up to my chest in the ocean and contemplating things. But the water that day was freeeeeeeeeeezing! You could see the Olympic Mountains in the distance which were still covered in snow!" The world premiere of "I Should Be Born" will happen the day before a special show sponsored by world-famous KROQ radio as a part of their Locals-Only series at The Roxy in Hollywood and will mark the band's first L.A. appearance since performing at this year's Coachella Music and Arts Festival.
