Drew Barrymore Whip It Sounds
Rhino reports: Drew Barrymore makes her directorial debut with Fox Searchlight Pictures' Whip It, a coming-of-age-on-wheels comedy set in the wild world of all-girl roller derby. Premiering October 2 in theaters nationwide, the film stars Academy Award nominee Ellen Page, Academy Award winner Marcia Gay Harden, Kristen Wiig, Academy Award nominee Juliette Lewis and Barrymore. WHIP IT – MUSIC FROM THE MOTION PICTURE will be available from Rhino Records September 29 at all retail outlets, including www.rhino.com, for a suggested list price of $13.98 (physical) and $11.99 (digital). Later this fall, the soundtrack will also be available on a special collectible vinyl.

The girl-power-meets-punk-rock spirit of the music featured in Whip It plays an integral role in telling the story, from setting the film's rebellious tone to celebrating its characters' wild individuality. Barrymore says music was frequently played on the movie set, where a hot-pink boom box was her constant companion. "We spent countless hours listening to as many different songs as possible, always searching for just the right song for just the right moment," she says. "Some of these songs were inspirational to us from very early on in the process, and really set the tone in our minds of the movie we were trying to make."

Conceived as a mix tape, the soundtrack's 19 songs are peppered with talented young artists like Belgian electro-rockers Goose ("Black Gloves"), Mercury Prize nominees The Go! Team ("Doing It Right"), L.A. beat-punks The Ettes ("Crown Of Age"), Rolling Stone Artist to Watch Apollo Sunshine ("Breeze"), Swedish singer-songwriter Jens Lekman, Nebraska indie-pop quintet Tilly And The Wall ("Pot Kettle Black"), and Peaches' raunchy fun ("Boys Wanna Be Her"). - more on this story

Protest The Hero A Little Later Than Planned
BW&BK reports: Guitarist Tim Millar from Protest The Hero has issued an update about a delay for their new DVD:

"After collectively recreating the Footloose dance to subside our anger, Gallop Meets The Earth hasn't met the deadline. With countless hours of editing, tirelessly watching our cheesy and unacceptable stage moves, making sure all the bonus footage wasn't too inappropriate and embarrassing, and Luke himself running to FedEx to mail out the final copy of our upcoming DVD release, I regretfully am here to inform you that there was a manufacturing defect not once, but twice in the process of mass producing this DVD.

"That being said, the release in the States is unaffected by this, but in Canada the new release date is September 29th. Please understand that we did everything on our end to get this DVD done and out on time and this was entirely out of our control. I'm sure it's already on your favorite torrent site as we speak so I guess no one's missing out. So please join us with the rage subsiding Footloose dance, or at least watch that episode of Flight of The Conchords. Maybe we just built up too much bad Karma in the last five years." - more on this story

Swampdawamp Rock This Country
PR reports: Charlotte, North Carolina's Swampdawamp announces the release of their 3rd album, Rock This Country, available now at most major digital retail outlets and in physical form on their official site.

The album title translates perfectly the content and direction of this 12-track disc which, like the band, crosses the border between rock and country genres and clearly defines what has become the norm for this artist and its label, Big Penny Entertainment. Rock This Country was produced by Ken Coomer and Charlie Brocco.

Rock This Country is a true American blue-collar album throughout and the brilliant efforts of a band that defies being branded by New York or Nashville. Together, the songs and playing skills deliver a statement from a band that truly gets what their audience wants and what the new generation of listeners to find and cling to. - more on this story

Madrigal Reissue
MMP reports: Madrigal is one of the most intriguing modern gothic metal bands. Their style brilliantly captures the collaboration of heavy, powerful music with dark, atmospheric and even progressive sounds. The group's debut album – "I Die, You Soar" – brings eight tracks of masterfully crafted melodies, filled with a variety of strong, intensive emotions…

The album, officially released on September 24th, 2001, delivered a heavy dose of down-tempo gothic metal with hints of power metal, as well as progressive and alternative rock. This was backed by a mixture of harsh and melodic vocals, perfectly capturing the unique atmosphere of Madrigal's music. One of the group's most characteristic features was the extensive use of keyboard arrangements, which brought their sound closer to such acts as Katatonia and Amorphis. The highlight of the album included such songs as "Taint of Shame", "Enticed" and "Moulded Pain" (featuring a guest vocal performance by Tobias Martinsson of The Provenance). The album proved to be very successful – critics praised the group's rich style and often compared their music to the likes of In Flames, Dark Tranquility and Lacuna Coil.

Metal Mind Productions will re-issue "I Die, You Soar" on 5th October in Europe and 1st December in USA (via MVD). New digipak edition is limited to 2000 copies. Digitally remastered using 24-Bit process on a golden disc.

Drink Up Buttercup Ink New Deal
PR reports: Drink Up Buttercup have signed with Yep Roc Records and to celebrate are giving away the single 'Even Think', a fast-paced fist-pumper, driven by frenzied organ arpeggios and swelling vocal harmonies reminiscent of the sound of Brian Wilson re-imagining The Velvet Underground's White Light/White Heat – all recorded and mixed in less than 24 hours as a lo-fi gift for their fans sonically unique from their other recorded material.

If this is the kind of studio magic that is conjured in less than one day you won't believe your ears when you get to hear the full length coming in early 2010 recorded by Philly's veritable go-to guy, Bill Moriarty (Dr. Dog, Man Man) and mixed by Rusty Santos, the man responsible for the sound that graced Panda Bear's Person Pitch.

The single will be backed by an all new alternate version of the live performance fan favorite "Heavy Hand," and this digital 45 can be downloaded for FREE at Yep Roc's site . And for all the vinyl junkies out there the 7" only version will feature a cover of the Buzzcocks classic "Why Can't I Touch It." Expect two amazing reworks of the single courtesy of electro-pop meastro Cale Parks and renowned party-starter Andrew WK. - more on this story
