exclaim.ca reports: The Get Up Kids are back together and celebrating the tenth anniversary of their disc Something to Write Home About with some touring. But as one of the originators of emo, the band are not happy with what that word has come to represent. So much so, in fact, that they're apologizing for their part in the whole mess.No one old enough to remember bands like Boys Life, Cerberus Shoal or Texas Is the Reason likes to hear the word "emo" anymore; Jim Suptic, Get Up Kids guitarist, understands and is now saying he's sorry for the scene his band unwittingly helped create. In an interview with Drowned in Sound, Suptic had some less-than-kind words for today's emo bands. "Honestly, I don't often think about the state of 'emo,'" Suptic said. "The punk scene we came out of and the punk scene now are completely different. It's like glam rock now."

Reuters reports: Get ready to hear a softer side of Avril Lavigne. The Canadian pop singer tells Billboard.com that she's taking a more serious, stripped-down approach to her fourth studio album, tentatively slated for a November release on RCA."A lot of the songs are mainly the acoustic and my vocal," says Lavigne of the as-yet-untitled project. "It's a lot different from anything I've done before. It's not a pop-rock record. This is more about emotion and feeling." Lavigne's husband (and Sum 41 frontman) Deryck Whibley produced eight of the album's projected 12 tracks, half of which she wrote by her herself. For the other half, she's been working with former bandmate Evan Taubenfield and songwriter/producer Butch Walker, who co-penned her 2004 single "My Happy Ending."

Band Statement reports: On July 27, 1979, AC/DC released Highway To Hell, a timeless rock n' roll classic that ultimately marked both a triumphant beginning, and a tragic end for the young band from Down Under. Thirty years later, and after going platinum seven times over in the USA alone, it remains an undeniable classic of the genre, and has served as a musical touchstone for countless acts in the years since.By the time the band began recording Highway To Hell, their follow-up to 1978's Powerage, AC/DC had earned their reputation as a jaw-dropping live act, so much so that few bands would agree to let AC/DC open for them, for fear of being upstaged by the electric young Aussies. Despite their live reputation, their previous two albums, Let There Be Rock and Powerage, hadn't achieved widespread commerci al success, topping out in the twenties on the Australian charts, and in the mid-hundreds in the USA. Stepping into 1979, it was time for AC/DC to make the album that undisputedly captured their massive sound in its full glory. It took three months of recording, and the end result not only catapulted AC/DC to superstardom, but also served as a sonic blueprint for a generation of hard rock acts to come. The full impact of Highway To Hell would come into focus as the band grew (and grew and grew) over the coming decades. Still, Highway To Hell stands today as a testament to the fact that in any era, on any continent, there will always be a place for cranked-up, dialed-in, earth-quaking, hip-shaking, head-banging rock & roll.

HER reports: Last October, one of Slayer's brand new songs, "Psychopathy Red," leaked online, and since then the song has been streamed more than a half-million times. Nine months is a long stretch to go without a new Slayer track, so the band is making available another morsel from their upcoming album, World Painted Blood, due out later this year. The limited-edition single, a Kerry King composition, is titled "Hate Worldwide," and will be available exclusively as a CD-single at Hot Topic stores beginning tomorrow, Tuesday, July 28."It's a really cool track, and Tom's voice sounds incredible on it," said King. "The last line in the song's chorus is '..spread a little hate worldwide,' and that's what we've been doing for 25 years." As World Painted Blood is a Slayer album, it deals with topics such as death and destruction, war, serial killers, and the Apocalypse. The album was recorded in Los Angeles over two time periods, during October 2008 and then between late January and March 2009. World Painted Blood was produced by Greg Fidelman, who's spent time in the studio with Metallica, the Gossip, the (International) Noise Conspiracy, Slipknot and others, and executive produced by long-time Slayer colleague, Rick Rubin, who suggested Fidelman for the project.

LA Times reports: What do William Shakespeare and heavy-metal rock have in common? Why, a lot more than you might think, according to Jason Simms, a musician with the Portland, Ore.-based band called the Metal Shakespeare Company."There's sort of an element of exaggeration to both," Simms told Culture Monster. "'Romeo and Juliet' is really hard to fathom in our day and age — two teenagers declaring their love after knowing each other for 15 minutes? Also, a lot of metal lyrics from Manowar and Iron Maiden are about going into battle, and so they work well with the historical dramas like 'Henry V'." He added: "And both have a lot to do with gender bending and costumes — I mean, Iron Maiden wore tights, had long the hair and put on makeup." [we won't fact check the last part of that claim]

Columbia Records reports: Aware/Columbia Records recording artist Five For Fighting, aka John Ondrasik, will release the new studio album Slice on October 13, 2009. The album is led by the first single, "Chances," which is available now on iTunes. The Grammy nominated Ondrasik, who recorded the new album in Los Angeles and New York, reunited with his producing partner Greg Wattenberg ("Superman," "100 Years") for three of the album's tracks including "Chances," while producing the remaining songs himself. Written with the perspective of one man's views on his life and the experiences and surrounding world that have shaped it, SLICE harkens back to the golden age of American songwriting in the 1970's, an era that greatly influenced Ondrasik's own introspective style. Comments Ondrasik, "It's great to be back with new songs from old places."
