Reuters reports: Nobody's more surprised that Jason Newsted will be playing again with Metallica this weekend than ... Jason Newsted. Newsted said he had modest expectations for his role in the group's Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction on Saturday in Cleveland. "I just planned on going, looking good in my suit, hanging out with my family, going up and getting the award, making a nice speech...," he said. Then, last Thursday, he got a call from drummer Lars Ulrich that changed things. "He said, 'We want you to rock with us,'" Newsted said. Ulrich told him that Robert Trujillo, Metallica's current bassist "'is not gonna play at all. We want you to play.' And my first question was, 'How's Robert with that? How does he feel about that? I don't want to create any kind of negative anything. I want this all to be proper.'

SleazeRoxx reports: Some Panhandle residents looking forward to the new variety show hosted by Ozzy Osbourne and his family might be out of luck. Panama City Fox affiliate WPGX has decided not to air "Osbournes: Reloaded," which premieres Tuesday night after "American Idol." General Manager David Cavileer says the show does not fit with "community standards." Instead, the station will air an episode of "The Simpsons." Cavileer says he would have been willing to air the show after 10 p.m., but the 8:20 p.m. scheduled start time was too early.

PR reports: Thomson, worldwide leader of services to the content creators, today introduces mp3HD, the latest addition to the mp3 family. The new mp3HD format allows mathematically lossless compression of audio material while preserving backward compatibility to the mp3 standard. Content creators, the music industry and end users are now able to enjoy the ultimate audio quality experience with the same ease of use as the mp3 format. Users and content owners can organize their music library with the simplicity that they are used to with mp3 files. With the mp3HD format, the music industry can engage in user-friendly distribution of lossless music and audio files. The added file size required for lossless compression no longer being a limiting factor thanks to the continuous increase in Internet bandwidth capacity and file storage size. "Over the past years, most of the music download services have adopted mp3 as their format of choice. By introducing this new mp3HD format, Thomson enables users and content providers to enjoy ultimate audio quality while preserving the convenience of the mp3 format," said Rocky Caldwell, General Manager, mp3 and Audio Licensing for Thomson.

Jam! reports: The childhood home where rock guitarist and singer Jimi Hendrix is said to have first discovered music has been dismantled after eight years of preservation efforts failed. BW&BK reports: God Forbid has officially stated that longtime guitarist Dallas Coyle has left the band and Kris Norris (ex-Darkest Hour) will join the group for the Lamb of God tour, which kicks off Thursday. Doc Coyle further comments: "There have been a barrage of rumors and questions on whether or not Dallas has left God Forbid. It's true that Dallas has left the band. It's taken us a few days to confirm this definitely, and figure out what we were going to do considering the fact that we are starting a very important tour with LAMB OF GOD this week. I don't want to go into the hairy details, but all I can say is that there was a mutual disagreement between Dallas and I, and the disagreement became angry on both sides, and he decided to sit out the tour the day we were supposed to leave. We later learned he did not want to tour anymore at all.

PR reports: John "J.D." DeServio's career as a bassist can be defined only as formidable and impressive. His time spent with Black Label Society has taken him around the world and made him a sought after bassist for clinics from Japan to South America and back. But long before he began globetrotting, J.D. started out like most accomplished musicians, in the garage with a band and a bottle of Captain Morgan. Twenty-five years later, that same band has emerged as Cycle of Pain with an intense and diverse self titled hard rock album. The album will be released on April 21st, 2009, by Reform Records/Rock Ridge Music, and Cycle Of Pain will begin its tour that same day opening for Black Label Society.

AP reports: Miley Cyrus plans to be back on the big screen, and soon. Hannah Montana? Not likely. So says the 16-year-old whose alter ego brings her secret double life as a pop star to U.S. theaters on April 10 with "Hannah Montana: The Movie.""We got really lucky with having the material to make one movie," Cyrus said in an interview Monday. The film reveals Hannah Montana's identity to the world in a way Cyrus says is "very clever" and diminishes the chances of a sequel — but doesn't dampen the future of the popular Disney TV show. "I don't know if I would do another (Hannah Montana) film, but I would love to do another season," said Cyrus

conqueroo reports: The South Memphis String Band, a trio composed of Luther Dickinson (North Mississippi Allstars), Alvin "Youngblood" Hart (Grammy-winning bluesman) and Jimbo Mathus (Squirrel Nut Zippers), launches its first tour on April 23, 2009 in Dallas, Texas, targeting the East and South. The three friends, bound by Memphis and North Mississippi roots, will tour ahead of recording their debut album later this year. So far only two songs have been unveiled, both at the trio's MySpace page myspace.com/southmemphisstringband. So the April and May dates will be an opportunity for fans to get in on the ground floor. Although they'd known each other for years, the trio's musical spirit gelled last year when they recorded a yet-unreleased album with Luther's father, legendary producer Jim Dickinson, called New Moon Jellyroll Freedom Rockers.
