Recap of top stories for the week of 9/10/07
Top Stories This Week Plus a Quick Van Halen Update
antiMusic reports: It was pretty eventful week in music. The biggest story by far was the Led Zeppelin reunion. Yes we were skeptical all the way (as we are with most rumors of this type) but we're happy to see that it is happening after all. Now the rumor mill is churning at full speed with speculation that it may turn into a full scale reunion tour. We'll wait and see.

A very sad story was a second most read of the week. It was about the passing of Hughie Thomasson (Outlaws/Lynyrd Skynyrd). The world lost an important voice in music on Sunday. It's really sad that on the same day that we got to witness just how much quality has disappeared from popular music with the MTV VMA awards someone like Thomasson, who should have outsold every "artist" on that stage, lost his life without much media attention. But in the end he dedicated his life to the music he loved and we still have that gift from him and the people that matter the most, his fans, recognized what a loss was suffered. RIP Hughie you will be missed.

The third most read individual Day in Rock story this week wasn't a story at all, it was a bit of a rant we ran on Friday called "We Are Not For Sale" about selling editorial coverage. The response was overwhelming. We got hundreds of emails of support and only three negative ones. (2 from people that run sites that engage in the practice of selling editorial content with their lame excuses.) We'll address some of those emails in a mailbag segment next week but a quick thanks for all the support from everyone. You are why we keep doing this. It really is all about the music stupid. Even the stupid music we make fun of here. And also an FYI that the CEO of the PR company that sent the email that started this mess did issue an retraction and apology on Friday. It appears it was sent by mistake by someone that's pretty new there that didn't understand what they were doing. That wasn't spelled out in the retraction but that's what we read between the lines and we will take the apology in good faith it appears to have been sent with. We'll repost that rather long rant at the very end of this recap instead of the top 3 for those that missed it. In a perfect world the strong feelings expressed by us and a handful of other publications behind the scenes about this would convince labels and PR companies from working with sites that trade coverage for money but this isn't a perfect world and the music business is anything but perfect. Nevertheless, we'll keep on doing it for the right reasons and be able to look ourselves in the mirror.

The fourth biggest story was Kid Rock punching Tommy Lee. It's pretty self explanatory. Surprisingly, even though they no longer sell many albums the couple of articles about Motley Crue and Tommy leaving the band came in high as well. To be fair the do a great business with their tours. We won't go into all that.

Interestingly, some of the least read stories were probably about the two artists getting the most media attention this week (aside from Led Zeppelin.) Do we even need to tell you? Yes, Kanye West and 50 Cent who both released hyped up albums this week. We'll include one story in the round up simply because it shows Pocket Change getting beat and despite him being beat by an equally worthless "artist" it's still good news.

Before we continue with the other big stories from this week we have a quick update about a story we've been following. A FYI for Van Halen fans. Two additional shows go on sale this Saturday (9/15) at 10am local time. The shows are 10.28 in St. Louis, MO and 11.25 in San Diego. good luck!

Top 3 stories for this week
Motley Thru? - A Top Story for the week of 9/10/07
antiMusic reports: Is Tommy Lee Motley Thru or not? His bandmates won't return his calls but he says he is still a member of the band. The news that Lee was out of Motley Crue broke this week when the press got their hands on the amended lawsuit the band filed against former manager Carl Stubner, which said that Lee "recently informed [bassist Nikki] Sixx and [guitarist Mick] Mars, the shareholders of MCI [Motley Crue, Inc.], that he was resigning from the band and his resignation was accepted."

Now Lee has reportedly issued a statement contradicting that. It reads, "I am a founding member of Motley Crue. Based on internal band issues aired publicly, my future with the band is uncertain. I have tried to meet with my bandmates repeatedly without success but have informed them that I'm not walking away from my band of 25 years.

"It troubles me that the current legal issues which were filed by the corporations against my personal manager are separating us and causing more dysfunction. I hope we can work this out amongst ourselves."

The original lawsuit accuses Stubner's of mismanagement of Lee when he advised him to star in two failed reality shows that made him look "incoherent, lazy and incompetent," which not only provided some reality for reality TV- more on this story

Outlaws / Skynyrd Legend Dies - A Top Story for the week of 9/10/07
antiMusic reports: Outlaws founder and one time Lynyrd Skynyrd guitarist Hughie Thomasson passed away Sunday night at his home in Brooksville, Fla. "He went out to dinner with his wife Mary on Sunday (Sept. 9), went home, got comfortable in his favorite chair to watch football and then passed away from a heart attack during a nap," according to CMT.

Lynyrd Skynyrd issued a statement on their website "With our deepest sympathy we have lost another one of our brothers to the rock and roll heaven. We had many a good time writing and playing with Hughie and spent many miles on the road together. God bless his family and all the fans that love Hughie for his playing and singing. Out hearts and prayers go out to his family. He will be truly missed. Fly on Free Bird."

Thomasson was a founder of the legendary southern rock band The Outlaws and stayed with the band through several lineup changes, breakups and reformations. During their career they produced 13 albums and amassed a loyal following. Following one of their breakups, Thomasson joined Lynyrd Skynyrd in 1996 and stay with them up until the 2005 reunion of the Outlaws.- more on this story

Zeppelin Reunite - A Top Story for the week of 9/10/07
antiMusic reports: It's official. Led Zeppelin announced on Wednesday that they will play their first concert together in at least two decades at a tribute concert to Ahmet Ertegun the late founder of Atlantic Records, the man that gave them their shot almost 40 years ago. John Bonham's son Jason will take the place of his late father in the band.

The event will take place at the O2 Arena in London on November 26 and aside from Led Zeppelin, The Who's Pete Townshend, Bill Wyman and the Rhythm Kings, Foreigner and Paolo Nutini have all signed on to perform and promoter Harvey Goldsmith hinted during the press conference that the show may see another reunion, this one with Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger and former Stones member Bill Wyman.

In all the hoopla surrounding this event, organizers and the band aimed to keep the focus on why it is taking place- Ahmet Ertegun. Profits from the event will go the Ahmet Ertegun Education Fund. And his widow Mica gave the event her seal of approval, "He would be very proud that Led Zeppelin have chosen to re-unite and headline a benefit concert in his name featuring so many of his friends."

Britney Bombs - A Top Story for the week of 9/10/07
antiMusic reports: Britney Spears had hoped for a comeback. The poptart opened Sunday's night's MTV Video Music Awards with a lip-synced "performance" of her new single "Gimme More". But unlike the famous Madonna and Britney kiss from a few years ago everyone that actually tuned in will be talking about this "performance" for a very different reason. Britney sucked!

We here at the Day in Rock didn't tune in since what they try to pass off as music there seldom lives up to the name unless you are a fan of autotune, over production and insipid lyrics, so we can't give you a first hand account but a reporter from AP was able to stomach the show and reports that Britney was in bottom form and "looked bleary and unprepared.'

The AP roast goes further than that. Here is a little taste, "She lazily walked through her dance moves with little enthusiasm. It appeared she had forgotten the entire art of lip-synching; and, perhaps most unforgivable given her once taut frame, she looked embarrassingly out of shape." - more on this story

Radiohead Finish CD - A Top Story for the week of 9/10/07
antiMusic reports: Radiohead may not have a record deal but they do have a new record. This according to their guitarist who told a magazine last week that the famed band has finally completed recording their new studio album.

Radiohead guitarist Jonny Greenwood says that the band is considering their options at the moment so no firm release date or guess at one is available at the moment. They finished their contract with EMI with the release of 'Hail To The Thief' in 2003 and opted not to renew their deal with the music giant.

"We just had a meeting about that today," Greenwood told Paste Magazine last week.- more on this story

Disney OK's Nude Photos - A Top Story for the week of 9/10/07
antiMusic reports: Does Sex Sell? That may be why High School Musical nude photos are ok with studio bosses. Things sure have changed at Disney since Walt passed away. Even a few years ago if nude photos of one of their stars surfaced, said star would get the boot. Now all the star has to do is issue an apology. Keep in mind that this is the same Disney that is censoring metal bands at the House of Blues at Disneyland.

Rumors flew over the weekend that Disney had fired High School Musical actress Vanessa Hudgens after nude photos of the 18-year-old starlet surfaced online. She supposedly snapped the photos for her boyfriend and co-star Zac Efron but someone got their hands on them and posted them online, according to Contact Music.

She of course issued a statement. "I want to apologize to my fans, whose support and trust means the world to me," Hudgens said in the statement. "I am embarrassed over this situation and regret having ever taken these photos. I am thankful for the support of my family and friends."- the Goofy reaction from the company

Osbourne Blames Courtney Love For Son's Drug Addiction - A Top Story for the week of 9/10/07
antiMusic reports: Mother of the Year Sharon Osbourne is trying to place the blame for her son's drug addiction on the shoulders of Courtney Love. Of course, any sane mother wouldn't let their children near someone like Love but Sharon is clearing pointing the finger outwards towards Love, claiming she got her son Jack hooked on hillbilly heroin.

Sharon apparently believes that Courtney Love encouraged her then 15 year-old son Jack to take Oxycotin. This begs the question of what sane parent would let their kids hang around a known junkie? (both Love and Jack have since cleaned up).

"I will never have time for Courtney Love. There's not a shadow of a doubt about that. My dislike for her is very personal," Sharon said according to Gigwise. "I'm not saying Jack wouldn't have taken it if she hadn't given it to him, but I'm appalled that an adult mother would give that to a 15-year-old boy. How could she do that to someone else's child?"

Kid Rock Beats Up Tommy Lee - A Top Story for the week of 9/10/07
antiMusic reports: Something exciting actually came out of the snoozefest better known as the MTV Video Music Awards. Seems Kid Rock gave Tommy Lee a beatdown during the ceremony. Rock first bitch slapping Lee then punching him after Lee antagonized him according to a witness. Now Kid Rock is facing jail for doing what so many have wanted to do.

Hecklerspray details the fight. "At some point during last night's MTV VMA show, Pamela Anderson's ex-husbands Tommy Lee and Kid Rock got embroiled in some kind of schoolgirl slap-fight that ended when Kid Rock punched Tommy Lee, who was then dragged off by security."

"It looked like Tommy Lee initiated it because Kid Rock was ignoring him," rap producer Rich Nice, who was two tables away told AP "And Tommy Lee kind of antagonized him. And then when Tommy Lee stood up, it looked a little weird, like 'Yo, what?' When Tommy stands up is when Kid hit him the first time with a backhand. And then Tommy Lee looked like he was trying to get at him to aggressively retaliate and then Kid Rock hits Tommy Lee again - bong. And then security grabs Tommy Lee in a headlock and pulls him off."

Of course, Tommy sees the whole thing in a different light than the witnesses.- more on this story

Boyband Parody "Dick in a Box" Wins Emmy - A Top Story for the week of 9/10/07
antiMusic reports: The SNL boyband spoof "Dick in a Box" took away a Creative Arts Emmy for best original music and lyrics. The Andy Samberg and Justin Timberlake song became an internet hit when the uncensored video appeared online. YouTube has logged over 26 million views to date.
The Christmas time spoof included such not ready for prime time lyrics as "You know it's Christmas and my heart is open wide / Gonna give you something so you know what's on my mind / A gift real special, so take off the top / Take a look inside / it's my dick in a box".

Timberlake was not on hand to accept the honor but his co-star in the video, Andy Samberg, was. "I think it's safe to say that when we first set out to make this song, we were all thinking 'Emmy'," he said. "The other thing we were thinking was 'hey; here's this young up and comer, Justin Timberlake, who is clearly very talented and could clearly use a break."

Coldplay To Shortchange Fans on New CD - A Top Story for the week of 9/10/07
antiMusic reports: Prospekt has struck again. For non-Coldplay fans, Prospekt is the signature being used on the band's online journals. This time Prospekt offers up some details on the band's upcoming album including some likely song titles, and more importantly that fans will only get nine songs and album under 45 minutes in length.

The blog was dated last week but the official Myspace didn't make mention of it until Monday. It says that the band have returned to the studio to resume work on the new album but also says "The plan has always been to make a short record. No more than 42 minutes. 9 songs (give or take)."

That doesn't mean that they are only recording nine songs. The journals says that the band will release at least two songs independant of the album.- more on this story

PR reports: Disappointing news today as Kaiser Chiefs cancel their upcoming US tour, citing the need to focus on new material. The band will still perform shows in Austin and New York, but the rest of the dates are now cancelled. Kaisers drummer Nick Hodgson issued the following statement:

"We'd like to apologize to fans in America and Canada, especially those who have already bought tickets, but something had to give. We've been extremely busy all year and had no time to focus on the future, we plan to have new material out as soon as possible and we've wanted to record all summer. - more on this story

Trick Daddy Arrested - A Top Story for the week of 9/10/07
antiMusic reports: Say what you will about rapper Trick Daddy, but he does live his lyrics. He was arrested at a Miami strip club on Tuesday morning and charged with disorderly intoxication and resisting arrest following a fight at the club.

Maybe he was just "f**kin' around" like in his famed song where he raps "slap that bitch on the third / Nigga done caught wit a slurr / Cant see sh*t but a blurr" but police were called out to Tootsie's Cabaret shortly after 1 a.m. Tuesday. When police arrived they report that the rapper, real name Maurice Young, smelled of alcohol and they found him cursing and "threatening staff at the club," according to the police report.

Police asked the rapper to leave the building, he refused and according tot he police report when the police asked him "to put his hands behind his back, he refused and started moving his arms around not to be handcuffed", thus the resisting arrest charge.

Mastodon Injury at VMAs - A Top Story for the week of 9/10/07
antiMusic reports: Video nearly killed the Mastodon star. The acclaimed metal band's guitarist Brent Hinds sustained mysterious injuries following an appearance at the MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday night. He is currently in a Las Vegas hospital being treated for what his publicist described to MTV as a "severe" head injury.

The band's camp is keeping a tight lip about what actually went down. MTV spoke with their manger Nick John who wouldn't provide many details about how Hinds was injured but did tell them that he also suffered a broken nose and two black eyes during the mysterious incident that took place around 3 a.m. Monday morning after the band performed with the Josh Homme at the VMAs.

We can probably discount rumors that Britney sat on him.- more on this story

Anxiety Kills White Stripes Tour - A Top Story for the week of 9/10/07
antiMusic reports: We've heard a lot of excuses for canceling tours in the past but this one is a new one. Acute Anxiety. That's the reason being given for The White Stripes pulling the plug on their US Tour which was supposed to kick off today (Thursday).

The band issued a simple and to the point statement about the last minute cancellation, "Meg White is suffering from acute anxiety and is unable to travel at this time. The White Stripes sincerely apologize to their fans. 'We hate to let people down and are very sorry.' Fans can obtain refunds for their tickets at point of purchase."

The band was supposed to tour behind their latest effort, the much hyped "Icky Thump" which dropped seven spots this week on the Billboard charts to No 51 after 11 weeks on the chart. This is just a couple spots ahead of Kelly Clarkson who was forced to cancel a tour earlier this year due to lack of interest. - more on this story

50 Cent Heading for Retirement - A Top Story for the week of 9/10/07
antiMusic reports: The first day sales are showing that 50 Cent is heading for retirement. Half a buck promised to retire if Kanye West outsold him this week and looking at the first day sales from SoundScan it shows that Kanye West is headed towards victory outselling Fiddy by over 125,000 copies on Tuesday.

We used to have wait a week to see how new releases are selling but no more with SoundScan's recent launch of "Building Charts" which charts sales from some of the leading retailers. Billboard.com says that "The Building Charts offer an indication of how races shape up each week for SoundScan's final charts, which post projected national sales each Wednesday morning, extrapolated from a panel of merchants that represents more than 90% of the U.S. music market."

So how did each one do on the first day? Kanye logged 437,000 sales for his new one "Graduation," and Fiddy's "Curtis" sold 310,000 copies. If the trend continues West will easily top the Billboard chart next week. - some credits

Axl Vs Security Guard - A Top Story for the week of 9/10/07
antiMusic reports: A Staff Pro security guard has filed a lawsuit against Axl Rose claiming that the Guns N' Roses frontman kicked him in the head during a concert. Axl must have kicked him hard because the lawsuit alleges that the kicking took place ten years before the actual concert.

The guard, Gary Armijo, filed suit in the Los Angeles Superior Court on August 29 and claims that during a concert at the Gibson Amphitheater in Los Angeles in December of 1996, Axl "intentionally kicked [him] in the head proximately causing severe physical injuries." We were at the show in question (it was December of last year) and did not witness such a headkicking, but there was a spot where someone tossed a drink on stage and that set Axl off a little, so it may have happened then.

Of course, Axl says this lawsuit and allegations are BS. At least his attorney does and says they have video to prove it. Howard Weitzman, Axl's attorney spoke with TMZ shortly after they ran a story about the lawsuit and said, "The allegations in this lawsuit are frivolous. There is video of this incident which contradicts the allegations against Axl. Axl vehemently denies he did anything wrong which will be proven via witnesses and the video. Unfortunately anyone can file a lawsuit whether it has merit or not. In my opinion this is a pathetic attempt to get money from Axl." - read the lawsuit here

Eminem Recording New CD - A Top Story for the week of 9/10/07
antiMusic reports: While 50 Cent is heading into a promised retirement after Kanye West outsells him this week, it looks like Eminem is coming out of his rumored retirement. And Eminem made the announcement during a Fiddy radio interview. How's that for upstaging? Of course, Half a Buck is now backtracking on his promise.

New York radio station Hot 97 DJ Angie Martinez had quite the show on Wednesday as Fiddy trashed his record label and Eminem made a surprise call in to the station during the interview to announce he is working on a new CD.

"It feels good right now, the energy of the label. For a while, I didn't want to go back to the studio," Eminem said. "I went through some personal things. I'm coming out of those personal things."

Meanwhile, Fiddy blames his record label for his inability to outsell Kanye West and broke his retirement pledge in the next breath.

Terrorist Wants to Behead That "Whore" Britney Spears - A Top Story for the week of 9/10/07
antiMusic reports: Talk about getting a bad review! Remember the SNL skit the week after Ashlee Simpson got caught lipsyncing on the show? You remember, the one with the terrorist singling out the "lipsynching popstars" as a reason to hate the West? Seems it wasn't a joke after all as a terrorist has called for the two "whores" Britney Spears and Madonna to be beheaded for spreading "their satanic culture against Islam". Of course if they convert to Islam all will be forgiven.

Muhammad Abdel-Al, the senior leader of the Palestinian terror group The Popular Resistance Committees took special aim at the pop stars in an interview featured in the new book 'Schmoozing with Terrorists: From Hollywood to the Holy Land Jihadists Reveal their Global Plans - to a Jew!' by Aaron Klein which reportedly asked Islamic extremists what would happen to the U.S. under Islamic Sharia law. And it's not good for MTV.

"If I meet these whores I will have the honour - I repeat, I will have the honour - to be the first one to cut the heads off Madonna and Britney Spears if they will keep spreading their satanic culture against Islam," pronounced Abdel-Al.

But he gives the two pop stars hope of saving their heads in the event that the US ever comes under Islamic Fascist rule, "If these two prostitutes keep doing what they are doing, we of course will punish them.- he's not done! He's just about to get medieval on their asses

We Are Not For Sale - A Top Story for the week of 9/10/07
antiMusic reports: We felt the need to address an important issue to us here at antiMusic. There are a small number of publications, labels and PR firms out there that engage in a practice of trading advertising dollars for editorial coverage. The publications are pretty easy to spot as they are covered with record company ads and curiously also carry glowing reviews for the same CDs. We were approached today by a PR company we have worked with for a while that asked us point blank to SELL them coverage and that by doing so it would get us in good with the label. To say that email created some anger is an understatement. We contacted the label these artists were on, since we have been working with them for years and reiterated what we told the PR company. WE DO NOT SELL COVERAGE!!! The label was as shocked as us and they were also contacted by half a dozen other editors that have a conscience that also couldn't believe they were sent such an email.

I felt it was important to address this with you, our readers, and state clearly that in the nine and half years we have been online we have never once engaged in this. In fact, we stopped working with a couple of labels that engage in this practice and you will not see any coverage for the artists we were approached about today (in fact, we also cancelled an interview with an artist we have been trying to interview for over a year because the same PR firm was working his latest project.*). No need to name names, as the label and band's had no idea this was being done in their name (but if we see some ads for them cropping up in the coming weeks on some sites we may have to let the cat out of the bag so you will know who is for sale and who isn't.) We do very little direct advertising here as we are too busy developing articles to concentrate on being salesmen or women. And yes, we do lose money almost every month because that is our focus and that is fine. If faced with the choice of selling out or shutting down, we will shutdown in good conscience.

Music critics get a lot of criticism themselves, which is totally understandable given the subjective nature of the medium and most honest critics wouldn't have it any other way. But I have to reiterate that we here at antiMusic got into this out of a love for music. Plain and as simple as that. So be assured that when you read a review or editorial on antiMusic you are getting the writer's honest opinion. Our editorial policy has always been that we let the writers have the freedom to write what they are inspired to write (with only politics being frowned on). Our review policy is simple. We get over a hundred CDs submitted to us each month and our writers then select the ones they wish to review. It really is as simple as that and that's why you will find some major releases right next to a unsigned band (and won't find some bigger releases reviewed here).

Also the stories in the Day in Rock are included because we feel they will be of interest to you, our readers, and we do try to mix it up to offer as broad of coverage as possible in all areas. We have always had an open policy with coverage, when readers ask us to cover certain artists we do. As long as we are online that will never change and as long as I am the editor you will never once see any article on antiMusic that was paid for. It may not seem important to you, but it is at the utmost importance to us. With the record biz being tainted enough in other areas you do not need to be exposed to bogus reviews that were purchased with the aim to trick you into buying a CD with your hard earned money. This not only hurts the fans, but the bands and all legitimate artists as well. We may not see another ten years online because we resist this practice but we'll happily go into bankruptcy with our integrity intact. - Keavin Wiggins / Editor antiMusic Network- more on this story
