Abbey
Road RIP? |
Information Week reports: EMI, the Beatles'
British record company, is the subject of rumors relating to a possible
multi-billion dollar takeover.
That kind of talk has Beatle expert Tim
Riley worried. He's concerned that a takeover of EMI by a (presumably heartless)
equity firm could put the famed Abbey Road studios at risk. Abbey Road,
of course, was made famous by the Beatles album of the same name. It's
also where Revolver, Sgt. Pepper, the White Album, and other irreplaceable
milestones of modern music were recorded. [Ironically, the Beatles reportedly
hated Abbey Road and the photo on the cover shows them walking away from
it. More on this can be found at the full story link which also includes
a link to Riley's article about the Wall Street types trying to screw up
the music biz even more and make all acts the equivalent to an American
Idol pop tart. E.g. a mass consumer product. (As if the suits running things
now aren't doing a good enough job of that)]- Click

Stalker |
Idolator.com reports: The latest issue of
Wired has a lengthy, utterly creeptastic story about Linkin Park frontman
Chester Bennington, who was cyberstalked by an employee of Sandia National
Laboratories--a federal nuclear-research facility--for more than a year,
and how the woman who did it--changing passwords and sending out spoofed
e-mails all along--found out how to access his personal information:
The stalking started after she saw Chester's
email address inadvertently CC'd in a mass mailing to promote a tattoo
parlor he owned in Tempe. Using Chester's birthday and zip code to access
his Mac.com account, she started guessing passwords until she found the
right one: his middle name, Charlie. [see full story for more and yes Wired

Amazon Vs iTunes With a Little Help From The Beatles |
tinfoil.music reports: Amazon dropped the
bomb today by announcing its DRM-free music store. The previously-rumored
store will be launched sometime "later this year" and offer unprotected
MP3 files for purchase. The Amazon music store, which does not appear to
have a name yet, will offer "millions" of songs from over 12,000 record
labels.
"Our MP3-only strategy means all the music
that customers buy on Amazon is always DRM-free and plays on any device,"
said Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos in a statement. "Were excited to have EMI joining
us in this effort and look forward to offering our customers MP3s from
amazing artists like Coldplay, Norah Jones and Joss Stone." [Rolling stone
reports that the deal includes EMI's entire catalog, yes that means the
Beatles. See the full story for more. [see full story for more]-

No 4,327,451,942 Why R Kelly is an idiot |
Gigwise reports: R Kelly has had his ups and
downs, but despite the low points he still has an inflated opinion of himself.
The 'I Believe I Can Fly' warbler said:
"My greatest competition is, well, me . . . I'm the Ali of today. I'm the
Marvin Gaye of today. I'm the Bob Marley of today.
"I'm the Martin Luther King, or all the
other greats that have come before us. And a lot of people are starting
to realize that now," reports Hip-Hop Soul Magazine. [here we thought he

Bono
Smoked Out |
Jam! reports: Bono is grappling with a new
version of the unforgettable fire, and it has nothing to do with his band's
1984 album. The rocker-activist is embroiled in a flap over fireplaces
at his Manhattan apartment building, a newspaper reported Wednesday.
The U2 frontman has told co-op board members
at the stately San Remo that smoke from other residents' fireplaces is
wafting into the penthouse duplex he shares with his family, The New York
Times reported.
