All Smiles For Grandaddy Guitarist
PR reports: Let’s get it out there early: Jim Fairchild was the guitarist in Grandaddy. Once that band imploded, he formed something altogether more delicate and personal named All Smiles. After recording snippets of songs in borrowed spaces up and down the West Coast, an album started to come together.

"It was a no-budget record," says Jim. "There wasn't any backing yet. I just set up whatever gear I had in the kitchen of our borrowed house in Portland, and our living room in Los Angeles. It sounds like the places it was recorded in. You can hear the walls, and the floors, and the ceilings, and you can hear the cars, and the trees, and the guys selling drugs outside." Surrounding himself with talented musicians such as Janet Weiss (Sleater Kinney, Quasi), Joe Plummer (Modest Mouse, Black Heart Procession), Danny Seim (Menomena), and Solon Bixler (Great Northern), Fairchild has put together an album of lo-fi pop gems, sketching songs and stories with his spidery acoustic guitar lines. Ten Readings Of A Warning will be released on April 24th via Dangerbird Records. [grab an mp3 at the full story link]- Click Here for the Full Story

Winehouse Rehab
PR reports: Hailed by Newsweek Magazine as a cross between Billie Holiday and Lauryn Hill, British soul singer Amy Winehouse’s U.S. debut, Back To Black (Universal Republic Records) hits stores this Tuesday, March 13, amid a flurry of accolades, radio and TV buzz unprecedented in recent years for a young siren. Back to Black has already reached #1 in England and garnered the 23 year old Winehouse a Brit Award for Best British Female Solo Artist.

Her brassy mix of emotive vocals tinged with 60’s girl-group stylings, sly funk, and anguished jazz, sparked the New York Daily News to crown Back To Black a “marvelous debut that would do Etta James proud” while New Yorker Magazine called her “a fierce English performer whose voice combines the smoky depths of a jazz chanteuse with the heated passion of a soul singer,” and Spin Magazine affirming “there’s never been A British star quite like her.” R&B and Modern Rock radio have already embraced songs “Rehab” and “You Know I’m No Good” while Winehouse videos are quickly becoming a mainstay at VH1 and MTV. The Ice Man Cometh Again
conqueroo reports: Jerry Butler was accorded the nickname “The Ice Man” by a Philadelphia DJ who once called Butler’s show “the coolest thing I ever saw.” That was in the early ‘60s after Butler had left the Impressions, with whom he’d scored the doo-wop hit “For Your Precious Love.” More than 40 years later, he’s still the Ice Man, but you can call him “Commissioner Ice Man,” as he is Cook County Board Commissioner in his native Chicago. On April 24, Collectors’ Choice Music will reissue two of Butler’s seminal solo albums on one CD — The Ice Man Cometh and Ice on Ice, both produced by the multi-platinum Philadelphia writing and production team of Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff.

Pop historian Gene Sculatti wrote notes on the reissue, which includes an interview with Butler.[see full story for more]- Click Here for the Full Story

Today's Reviews
....Dustin Kensrue(Thrice) - Please Come Home
Dustin Kensrue of Thrice fame has yet to do wrong in my eyes. On Please Come Home he doesn't even go anywhere near a typical Thrice song. Instead he channels Johnny Cash, Ryan Adams, Pete Yorn, and some good old blues. (5 stars) - Read the full Dustin Kensrue - Please Come Home review

....We Are the Fury – Venus
Originally lumped in with the slew of post-hardcore, emo bands that have cropped up in the early part of this decade, We are the Fury have made a wise decision to distance themselves and have since become a quite credible and entertaining rock and roll band. (4 stars) - Read the full We Are the Fury – Venus review

....Zandelle - Vengeance Rising
Vengeance Rising is the invigorating follow-up to Twilight on Humanity, which made a splash in 2002. Zandelle puts so much passion and oomph into their performances, and you may feel your fist rising to the air without your consent.- Read the full Zandelle - Vengeance Rising review

....HHH: Winternacht - Lands of Ice and Snow
The debut release from Malphas (otherwise of Nargul), Lands of Ice and Snow is an attempt to recreate Winter via music. Lands of Ice and Snow is an interesting journey through an entire season, one typically associated with the greatest beauty and the starkest death.- Read the full Winternacht - Lands of Ice and Snow review

....Ari Hest - The Green Room Sessions
The EP is a teaser of sorts for a full length album that is scheduled to be released later this year. Hest's voice is slightly raspy and draws you in so that you forget about everything else; a voice you can get lost in. (4 stars) - Read the full Ari Hest - The Green Room Sessions review
