antiMusic reports: This week we have a real
treat for you. One of the best songwriting bands of this generation, Collective
Soul, is releasing their new album 'Afterwords' this week and we asked
lead guitarist Joel Kosche to select his five favorite tracks from the
CD and tell us a little bit about each one. (Ed checks in on a few tracks
too!). Today Joel tells us about the song "Bearing Witness":
I remember Ed writing this song a few years
ago for a TV show that never made it to air. After watching the pilot episode
I remember thinking that the song was actually better than the show. I
love the lyric ".... but stars have only so many wishes though".
You can pick up 'Afterwords' at Target
stores and iTunes now , plus see them on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno
on Friday (August 31). You can preview the entire CD

antiMusic reports: Jay-Z used one of the oldest
rap cliche's in the world to convince Rihanna to sign to his record label.
The rapper turned label head gave the young singer the life or death choice
of signing on the dotted line or hoping she could miraculously fly.
We've all heard the stories of hip-hop
thugs and moguls hanging people out of windows or off of balconies 20 stories
of the ground as a bargaining tactic. Rihanna says that Jay-Z used that
cliche to convince her to sign a contract.
After a successful audition for Jay-Z and
other Def Jam execs, the then 14 year-old R&B singer says that Jay-Z
gave her the ultimatum. "The audition definitely went well. They (Def Jam)
locked me into the office till 3am," she said according to Contact Music.
"And Jay Z said, 'There's only two ways out. Out the door after you sign
this deal. Or through this window...' and we were on the 29th floor."-

antiMusic reports: The always outspoken Nine
Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor took a little time out this weekend before
his band played the Leeds festival to slam some of the other artists on
the bill including The Smashing Pumpkins and Fall Out Boy.
Reznor spoke with UK's answer to Rolling
Stone, NME, before his band's gig and had some not so kind words for other
bands he was sharing the stage with. His biggest target was Billy Corgan's
latest incarnation of the Smashing Pumpkins featuring only two original
members. "I was never a big Smashing Pumpkins fan back when they were the
Pumpkins, not to sh*t on Billy or anything but I don't hear anything that
would make me want to care. I think trying to resurrect the name Smashing
Pumpkins... it's all a bit corporate for me."
He also took a dig at this year's lineup
for the famed UK music festival- more

antiMusic reports: American Idol want to extend
their cheesy music empire to include bands and Fox readily agreed so on
October 19th the network will premier 'The Next Great American Band' which
will be similar to the Idol's karaoke flagship except they'll have actual
bands compete to the top prize.
It wouldn't be an Idol project without
their "judges" and for some reason producers of the program think that
people two decades past their last hit make good judges for future stars.
With that in mind, the new Paula Abdul role will be filed by Prince protege
Sheila E, who last had a hit before most Idol contestants were born. They
actually managed to snag a lot higher profile musician this time around.
Instead of the one time Journey bassplayer hardly anyone had heard of before,
Goo Goo Dolls Johnny Rzeznik will fill the Randy Jackson slot with the
record mogul judge spot popularized by Simon Cowell going to Aussie record
man Ian "Dicko" Dickson. Let's hope he lives up to his nickname and slams
emo bands that try out.
The good news in all of this is that Ryan
Seacrest will not be hosting- more

antiMusic reports: Could it be true? Are the
pioneers of shoegaze finally regrouping? Word has it that the band is in
talks to reform to appear at next year's Coachella Valley Music and Arts
Festival and will follow it up with a world tour.
The band is reportedly close to inking
a deal to headline Coachella next year according to The Daily Swarm citing
"sources" in the US and UK. Of course, this isn't the first time the band
has been tipped for a reunion and they always fizzle out but The Daily
Swarm seems confident it will happen this time and come April of 2008 fans
will see them headline the California desert festival followed by a world
tour later in the year.
The band helped spark the shoegaze crazy
with their short-lived career together that produced only two studio albums
but a legion of diehard fans that have hoped against hope they would be
able to see their heroes again. Maybe this time they will get their wish.

antiMusic reports: Just as the Phil Spector
murder trial is getting close to wrapping up, the music producer has lost
his lead council. How much effect this will have on the trial is unknown
as the attorney missed most of the trail choosing instead to appear on
a syndicated television program.
Spector's lawyer, Bruce Cutler, made the
announcement on Monday that he and the music producer are parting ways.
He attributed the split to "a difference of opinion between Mr. Spector
and me on strategy."- more

artist/producer Danger Mouse - half of the no 1-selling mega-duo Gnarls
Barkley, half of the way-out cartoon-based collaboration Dangerdoom, and
sonic architect for the Rapture, Gorillaz, and Sparklehorse - is keeping

antiMusic reports: Bad Brains have announced
a string of West Coast dates in support of their latest effort "Build A
Nation," Produced by long time fan, Adam Yauch of the Beastie Boys. The
album has been billed as a return to form for the band that helped define
American Punk and Hardcore music. The four date tour kicks off on Sept

Hudson.
The Bad Brains first video off of Build
A Nation has been finished by director and System Of A Down member, Shavo.
Shot at Sasquatch Festival and also Portland Oregon by famed cinematographer
