antiMusic reports: This week we celebrate
the DIY spirit of Brad Skistimas, better known as Five Times August, who
not only turned down major label deals to stay indie but does everything
on his own resulting in over 100,000 in sales at online digital stores
like iTunes, placed nine songs from his album on television shows like
MTV's "Laguna Beach," the CW's "One Tree Hill," etc. And he has become
the very first unsigned artist to have a CD carried by retail giant Wal-Mart.
This week we asked Brad to pick five of favorite songs from the "Independent"
album and tell us a little bit about them.
Here is Brad to tell us about "Perfectly":
The girl I wrote this for has helped me write some of my favorite songs,
this being one of them. The reason it's one of my favorites is because
it's one of the very few songs that took little effort lyrically for me
to write.
Not that I didn't try hard, but that they
came to me easily because it was exactly what I wanted to say. I've done
that with few songs. It's weird to read over lyrics like these and know
that I am sharing such a personal moment in my life with other people.
Reading over the verse "How you leaned on me and how you'd sing to me..."
was such a cloud nine moment, I'll never forget it. Sentimental, I know,
but it really happened.
Have a listen for yourself and if you like

antiMusic reports: Has K-Fed turned Britney
Spears off to men all together? Perhaps if photos of the pop star topless

This is the second time that Spears has reportedly been seen in recently
weeks getting intimate with another woman.
The new photos in The Sun and OK! Magazine
show Britney and her former assistant in what the Sun describes in a "red
hot girl on girl session". The assisant, Shannon Funk, reported got friendly
with Spears in a L.A. hotel pool and the action was captured by photographers.
The new pictures surface as Federline has

antiMusic reports: The web was on fire this
week with news that Metallica was suing game makers for copyright infringement.
Dailygaming posted what is now claimed by many to have been meant as a
satirical article about Metallica suing Harmonix and Activision over placement
of their song "One" in "Guitar Hero 3" and "Rock Band".
The Metallica camp quickly denied the claims.
It is unclear whether the original article was originally posted on the
sites message board and then picked up as a news item. Attempts to pull
it up now result in a system error message. However, the article quickly
spread across the web and the text is as follows: Attorneys for the Grammy
award winning heavy metal band Metallica filed a lawsuit yesterday against
Harmonix and Activision (who recently acquired Red Octane) for copyright
infringement. The suit accuses the three gaming companies of illegally
distributing copies of Metallica songs in the upcoming and highly anticipated
games Guitar Hero III and Rock Band, both due out in late 2007.
The suit alleges that both companies planned
to package and distribute Metallica music through their video games in
what lawyers characterized as a "licensed music to player" system, or LM2P
network. Metallica is fearful that album sales could decline if their fans
were able to simply walk into any Gamestop or Best Buy and purchase an
$80 video game that contained one of their songs. - more

30th). Brown reportedly got into an argument with her 25-year-old next
door neighbor and ended with Brown smashing the woman's face with her BlackBerry
phone. The woman was treated at nearby hospital for a swollen lip, loose
teeth, and a bruised right eye. - more

antiMusic reports: Rap may have had declining
sales over the past few years but the music form is still popular enough
to place two release at the top of the Billboard charts. Houston rap duo
UGK made a triumphant return after a five year absence when their new album
"Underground Kingz" moved 160,000 copies last week, landing them at No.
1 on the Billboard 200. Their highest debut ever.
Plies made an even more impressive chart
debut when you consider that "Real Testament" is a debut album. The fact
that the single "Shawty (Feat. T-Pain)" is now ranking at No. 1 with-a-bullet
at Urban radio outlets nationwide, exceeding 10,000 spins, helped earn
Plies a No. 2 debut on the charts with sales of 96,000 units.
Korn didn't do so well in their second
week on the charts. They debuted at No. 2 last week but their new "untitled"
effort took a 64% nose dive to No. 10 with sales of 39,000, according to
Billboard. Other reports place them at No. 11 Korn with 41,000 in sales.

antiMusic reports: As if news of David Lee
Roth joining his former Van Halen bandmates Eddie and Alex for a reunion
tour wasn't enough, the band says that a new album may be on the way soon
as well.
But first don't call it a reunion tour.
David Lee Roth considers this incarnation of Van Halen, sans original bassist
Michael Anthony, a brand new band. "This is not a reunion. This is a new
band," Roth said during Monday's press conference. "Usually when a band
comes back like us it's rockers with walkers, and this is everything but.
Meet us in the future, not the past."
Looking to the future Roth said that they
are "plotting and planning" a new album. "Saving the world is (U2 singer)
Bono's job. We just want to save a hundred cities," Roth said. "Then we
want to save Europe, then we want to save Japan, Australia and ... Hong
Kong. Then we make an album. Lots of big dreams here, lots of ambition."

antiMusic reports: If you are going to put
together a soundtrack made up of cover tunes for a Bob Dylan inspired film,
you better be inspired with who you put on the album. It looks like the
producers of the "I'm Not There" may have pulled off the impossible with
assembling an impressive line-up of credible artists to tribute the legendary
Dylan on the two-disc album.
Sonic Youth, Sufjan Stevens, Eddie Vedder,
Jeff Tweedy and John Doe are just some of the notables that have contributed
tracks to the 30-track album which is set to hit stores on October 30th
from Columbia Records. The film will hit theatres almost a month later
on November 21st.
What about the man himself? Yes, a rare
from Dylan recording from The Basement Tapes era, is also set to appear.
In fact, this rarity acts as the title track to the film.-

antiMusic reports: Would you sell your child
out to a tabloid? Georgette Civil apparently did. The mother-in-law-dearest
to Amy Winehouse has told a tabloid that her son and daughter-in-law are
heroin and cocaine addicts.
Winehouse has made headlines lately after
a series of concert cancellations and a trip to the hospital, which fueled
speculation that she has a serious drug problem and that the hospital trip
wasn't for exhaustion but for an overdose. Now her mother-in-law tells
a tabloid that Winehouse admitted a few weeks ago that she's using heavy
narcotics.
Georgette Civil told the Daily Mirror that
she had a heart to heart a few weeks ago with Winehouse, who is married
to her son Blake Fielder-Civil. "It's the hardest thing in the world for
me to say in public that my son and his wife have a drug problem," she
told the British magazine. "I know my son had a drug problem ever since
he was 20 and moved to London. I needed to know about Amy's problems and
we had a chat – just the two of us. She told me she was addicted to heroin
and cocaine."

PR reports: DOWN, consisting of Philip Anselmo,
Rex Brown, Pepper Keenan, Kirk Windstein and Jimmy Bower are set to release
DOWN III-OVER THE UNDER on Sept. 25th through ILG/Warner Music Group. After
releasing two records mainly as a side project, the band got together in
the months before Hurricane Katrina to start working on new material.
After the tragedy of the Hurricane in which
the members were displaced and separated for many months, the band reconvened.
It was obvious at the onset that this was no longer a side project. With
everyone having honored their previous commitments with other bands, the
New Orleans natives were focused on DOWN and DOWN alone, having found new
life and a new bond through the common tragedies they all endured separately
and collectively culminating in their most definitive record of their career.
To chronicle the past five years leading
up to the release of DOWN III-OVER THE UNDER, Philip Anselmo will be placing
periodic installments to be released over the course of the next month
on the band's websites leading up to the release of the record. This is
Philip's personal communication to the band's loyal fan base and gives
a 1st hand account the tragedy, isolation, rebirth and ultimate triumph
of one of the most important band's of our time. The 1st installment appears
on August 17th on www.down-nola.com and - www.myspace.com/downnola

antiMusic reports: Sad news in the Seether
camp. Frontman Shaun Morgan's brother Eugene passed away and as a result
the band has cancelled two upcoming concerts in Idaho Springs and Southaven,
MS.
The band broke the tragic news on their
Myspace page. Here is what they had to say: I'm sure many of you have been
hearing some rumors about Eugene. Unfortunately these rumors are true.
Eugene passed away early Monday morning the 13th of August. As you might
have seen we have cancelled a few shows to allow Shaun and the rest of
us to come to terms with this tragic loss. Genie was an awesome human being,
the type of person you want to be around. He never failed to put a smile
on the face of all who he met and left a lasting impression on all who's
lives he touched. I know I speak for everyone who knew Eugene when I say
that he will be sorely missed. We all love you bro. Rest in peace Dale"

antiMusic reports: Are the narrow play-lists
on classic rock radio stations hurting classic rock bands? Deep Purple's
Ian Gillan seems to think so. In a new interview with Michael Senft of
The Arizona Republic, Gillan says that fans aren't offered the chance to
hear classic rocker's new material because radio stations focus on one
or two past hits.
"You have this thing called classic rock
radio over here," Ian Gillan told Senft. "It's been a death sentence for
all sorts of older bands. They don't play anything of ours other than Smoke
on the Water and Highway Star."
This frustration even inspired the song
"MTV" on their latest album, "Rapture of the Deep". "I heard (Purple bassist)
Roger Glover doing a radio interview, trying desperately to talk about
a record we did in 2003 called Bananas," Gillan said. "I was listening
to it and my jaw just dropped, as this deejay ranted on about 1973. She
wasn't the slightest bit interested in what he had to say, or anything
that had happened in the last 30 years." - Read

PR reports: +44 disappointed fans last week
when they pulled the plans for their European tour in favor of hitting
the studio to record their sophomore album. The disappoint went further
when they added that they had no plans to reschedule the cancelled dates.
"We want to start writing new songs and
we are really excited about the direction we have planned," the band said
in a statement at the time. "So we're going into the studio instead of
playing these few dates. We hope that our fans will forgive us for the
cancellation; in the end, this will make for an even better live show when
we come back."
Now the band has gone further to explain
the sudden cancellation: "Canceling the tour was not an easy decision,
not something we wanted to do, and not something that we take lightly,"
the band said according to Punkbands.- more
