The
Cure for Ashlee Simpson? |
Launch reports: The Cure frontman Robert Smith
has teamed up with singer Ashlee Simpson for a collaboration on her new
album. The as-yet-untitled album is the follow up to 2005's I Am Me.
Fall Out Boy's Pete Wentz [always looking
for press] denied any involvement in putting the unusual pair together,
even though both of them are his personal friends. He said: "I doubt I
had anything to do with it, 'cause they were friends since she was performing
in Chicago. But I definitely only have good things to say about Ash--I
think the collaboration could be great."[see full story for more. Maybe
Robert will sing and Ashlee will just lip synch to it?]-

Vasectomies Needed in US |
Reuters reports: Despite the No. 20 debut
on the U.S. album charts by Insane Clown Posse's new disc, the principal
player in the Detroit-based rock/rap hybrid knows what is about to happen.
"We do our best sales in our first two weeks, and then we fall off," Violent
J says.
"The Tempest," self-released on the act's
own Psychopathic Records, sold 33,000 units in the United States in its
first week on the tally… And even though first-week sales of "The Tempest"
-- the act's 11th charting album -- are significantly lower than the 73,000
units sold by the act's last full-length, 2004's "Hell's Pit," Violent
J isn't worried. That's because ICP has an entire industry to fall back
on. [see full story for how that fan bilking works]- Click

Let
It Be Free (of DRM) |
Idolator.com reports: EMI announced today
that its catalog would be available in DRM-free format. A quick and dirty
primer: Every EMI track that is available digitally will be made available
without DRM as well. (No Beatles ... yet. See full story for more on that)
- All sites that sell EMI music digitally
will have the option of selling DRM-free downloads in AAC, WMA, or MP3
format.
- EMI's DRM-free catalog is being referred
to as "premium downloads"; on iTunes, the files will be in unprotected
AAC format and twice the sound quality of currently available AACs, and
they'll cost $1.29/song.
- The price on full DRM-free albums will
be the same as their DRMed-up counterparts.
- Protected AACs from the EMI catalog will
still be available for 99 cents/song on iTunes.
- EMI's music videos on iTunes will also
be available without DRM.
- EMI will continue to use DRM "as appropriate,"
i.e. when it's locked into it by a retailer/distribution partner.
[See the full story link for a look at
what this all means, plus a bit on the Beatles coming to iTunes. ]

Brother Goes After iTunes |
Reuters reports: The European Commission has
sent formal charges to major record companies and Apple Inc., alleging
they are restricting music sales in Europe, a Commission spokesman said
on Monday.
European Commission spokesman said agreements
between Apple and the record companies violate the European Union's rules
that prohibit restrictive business practices.
"Consumers can only buy music from the
iTunes online stores in their country of residence and are therefore restricted
in their choice of where to buy music, and consequently what music is available
and at what price," said Jonathan Todd, European Commission spokesman.[see
