Black Artists Take On Jewish Songs for Black Sabbath
The new Black Sabbath CD is not the latest offering from the godfathers of heavy metal, it is the first compilation of black artists covering Jewish songs.

Focusing on the 1930s through the 1960s, it uses popular music to shed light on the historical, political, spiritual, economic, and cultural connections between African Americans and Jewish Americans.

Featuring Aretha Franklin, Lena Horne, Cab Calloway, and many others, Black Sabbath explores the myriad ways that Jews and African-Americans have coalesced and clashed, struggled against each other and struggled alongside each other. This is the soundtrack to a rarely told American story. The CD, produced by the Idelsohn Society for Musical Preservation, is set for September 14, 2010 release. - more on this story

David Dondero Releases New Song, Kicking off Summer Tour
David Dondero has released the first single from his forthcoming album, #Zero with a Bullet which is set to hit stores on August 3rd. David will also kick off a summer long tour this weekend with an appearance at AthFest.

"Wherever You Go" is pure, distilled Dondero at his most potent. An easy-shuffling drum beat anchors syncopated guitar picking andwistfully rambling banjo as David takes us through a colorfultravelogue of people, places, and things.

Full of rich detail and clever wordplay, Dondero creates a story of life on the move, hopping from city to city, taking in as much as you can, and moving on. Always moving on. - more on this story

Unicycle Loves You Going Soph
Unicycle Loves You will release their sophomore album, Mirror, Mirror, on September 7, 2010 through Highwheel Records.

The album sees this former quintet stripped down to its core trio and removed from the glossy studio setting. Jim Carroll, whose solo home-recordings inspired the band's initial formation, took on the roles of songwriter, recording engineer and producer in order to orchestrate a truly hand-crafted record.

Heavily influenced by cult horror films and science fiction, Mirror, Mirror manages to retain the playful energy the band is known for while pulling the listener into some darker territory. From the moments of the introduction, the sound of scraping metal and a ghostly chorus hint at the mischievous world that hides behind the looking glass. Things are never quite as they seem, however, and in an instant, the band plunges into "Quagga" glistening pop tune lead by bassist Nicole Vitale, who takes the reins on several tracks, including the single and title track "Mirror, Mirror" this time around. - more on this story

DJ Rob Swift Mixes Metermaids' new Mixtape
Swell and Sentence, aka Metermaids, have released their DJ Rob Swift mixed mixtape, HELLO. Moving into the fall, fans can also look forward to Metermaids EP, Rooftop Shake, produced entirely by Grammy Award-winning producer, 9th Wonder.

Having already released two singles to praise, including the Grizzly Bear-sampling "Yellow Tape" that peaked at #4 on The Hype Machine charts, the concept of the highly anticipated mixtape differs from the common fare of the mixtape world; taking a host of popular indie rock songs of 2009 and remixing each, Metermaids pull loops and chops from the indie tracks to create new canvases for the duo's original concepts and songs. Fans will still recognize the melodies of the original, but they'll nevertheless love the new lyrics, title and twist with each new track.

Perhaps, one of the most notable songs to be remixed is Metric's "Help, I'm Alive", into their own, "A Star Is Born." Taking Metric's recognizable opening line and applying it as their own opening line, they were able to mesh it seamlessly into their song's lyrics. Although no lyrics were used, they also remixed The White Stripes', "Icky Thump". Using only the guitar melody, Metermaids, proven over the years as one of the more genre-crossing hip-hop acts around, turn the riff, again, into something new and exciting. Mixes that work so effortlessly together are difficult to achieve, but Metermaids and DJ Rob Swift have managed not only to make it work but have made it so they all feel like originals. "We called it HELLO because we felt like we were re-introducing ourselves to the world, and to ourselves at the same time," says Swell. "Hello, we are Metermaids, and we like to have fun and make music together."

Harper Simon Teams With Blair Witch Project's Joshua Leonard For New Video
Harper Simon has released the first video from his debut album, the video for "Wishes and Stars", was directed by actor/director Joshua Leonard (The Blair Witch Project, Humpday and Hung) and can now be viewed online.

Marked by an accessible intelligence and impressive musical range, "Wishes and Stars" is certainly not "simple as a bee/as a melody in C" as the lyric reads. Co-written by acclaimed novelist Ben Okri, the song is a strong statement of Harper's considerable musical ambition. The song's eloquent and evocative chorus "there are more wishes than stars" points to Harper's seriousness of purpose as an emerging songwriter as well as his curiosity about the world.

The "Wishes and Stars" video features an array of captivating special guests, played by notable musicians, actors and artists, including Money Mark (Beastie Boys), lyricist/essayist John Perry Barlow (Grateful Dead), actress Angela Featherstone (The Wedding Singer, The Soloist), Alison Sudol (A Fine Frenzy), producer Laila Nabulsi (Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas), model/writer Jessica Joffee, and LA poet/painter/musician E.E. Johnston.

The Shadows Get Licked
Wanna play like The Shadows? Read on: 2009 saw the 50th anniversary of The Shadows, Britain's most successful instrumental and vocal group with a total of 69 UK hit charted singles. Lick Library have got together with the highly respected guitar tutor Lee Hodgson to produce a collection of three guitar tutorial DVD sets demonstrating how to get that unique sound of Hank Marvin and The Shadows.

Lee Hodgson is a versatile studio musician and vastly experienced stage performer, having played thousands of gigs, including arenas including touring with No. 1 chart act Odyssey. He is a confident and passionate communicator - his attention to detail is legendary!

The Shadows were pioneers of the four-member rock-group format (consisting of lead guitar, rhythm guitar, bass guitar and drums) in the UK. Their playing had a rhythmic bite and variety of tone which is distinctly their own. Hank Marvin has an individual guitar sound and appearance, primarily using a clean sound with very distinctive echo and vibrato giving a dreamy effect. His expressive use of the tremolo arm has made him one of the most distinctive guitarists ever - more on this story

Chilly Gonzales Announces New Album Release
Chilly Gonzales has set a September 14th release date for his new album, Ivory Tower, which was produced by German producer Boys Noize.

The album is a musical companion to a new feature film of the same name, written and produced by Gonzales, starring Tiga, Peaches and Gonzo himself. The film, which centers around two champion chess-playing brothers (Gonzales and Tiga) who share a love for the same girl (Peaches), confirms Gonzales as the musical genius and legendary all-round entertainer he's always claimed to be.

Chilly spent most of the past year wooing audiences with his now infamous Piano Talk Shows, which included several sold-out shows in New York (and two @ SXSW 2010) featuring high-profile guest collaborators and instigators such as Andrew WK, Sia, A-Track, and Princess Superstar creating beauty and mayhem on stage. But the main attraction, as always, was Chilly G, aka "Gonzo", who delivered his trademark wry, semi-autobiographical rap lyrics over original piano works, with additional storytelling in between songs. - more on this story
