Hetty Green Award Goes To Greedtallica!

Hetty Green is my favorite historical character. She epitomizes an attitude so out of step with common people, that her life's story is truly unique. I am delighted to hand over this prestigious designation to a very deserving band: Metallica.

Before you applaud and start throwing flowers at your computer screen, let me tell you what this award stands for, by telling you about the important role in history Hetty played. I'm sure that after you compare the two characters, Hetty & Metallica, you will see how the two are really cosmic soulmates, separated by only time.

Hetty Green's worth in today's dollars would be in the billions. She lived in the late 1800's, and when she died she left the staggering sum of $100 million dollars. She parlayed an inheritance of 1 million into the fortune she couldn't carry to the grave with her, through the brave new world of stocks and bonds. Such financial savvy isn't why I know her name, and it isn't why Metallica is being given this award. What Hetty is most famous for is her stingy ways. You can do an internet search and come up with many amusing & charming stories about her parsimony that space limits me from getting into. Primarily I want to analyze Hetty's treatment of the people who loved & looked up to her: her children, and Metallica's treatment of those who love & look up to them: the Raven's Heart Foundation.

Hetty hoarded vast sums of wealth at the time in history of the country's first Great Depression, which pushed prices to outrageous new heights. A brand new car cost between $500-$2000 ($115,000-$460,000 at today's pricing), a bar of soap cost $.05 bar ($11.50), beef cost $.13/ pound ($30/#). It was indignities such as these that forced the wealthy Mrs. Green to do whatever she could to save pennies. This included, most memorably, refusing to take her 14 year old son to the hospital when he injured his leg, preferring to treat it at home. Her nursing expertise meant that he had to have it amputated. She ate the same meal every morning, oatmeal that she cooked on her house's heating system. She shunned luxuries such as baths and laundry services, preferring to have laundered only the bottom edges of her garments, "The only part that's actually dirty" once or twice a year. She'd wear a dress until it hung on her like rags and she always dressed in black, earning her the loving nickname, 'The Witch of Wall Street'. Clearly she is hero for some to emulate.

So out of all of the deserving people, corporations and entities, why Metallica? Is it their lengthy history of suing their own fans? No, although Hetty was known to sue even her relatives in her quest to keep all of her money to herself. Is it their attempt to pander to the lowest common denominator music fan, who slobbers over Linkin Park, their wannabes and any such bubblegum- alt lite music? Nope, although I'm sure Hetty sold out (certain stocks & bonds, I mean,) many times over to get to her status as the wealthiest woman in history. Is it their attempt to turn every mention of them or use of their music by private individuals into revenue? That's getting pretty close to the types of Hettyisms I look for in my quest to award this coveted prize.

A recent news story featuring an interview with James Hetfield secured the lead for them in this year's running.  It seems the army has now included as standard equipment on some of their tanks, massive speakers designed to pummel the enemy with loud, American rock & roll. Whatever CDs the enlisted men have with them, that's what the army would use, be it Brittney, Run DMC, or our award winner's. When a magazine contacted James, his reaction to the news that his now lame music was being used against the Iraqi soldiers to demoralize them (which probably takes milliseconds: that's how long it takes me to dissolve in deep, grieved tears whenever I hear any given HettyGreenallica song since their black album. To hear such promise going to waste is incredibly depressing!) Anyway, the very first sentence out of James' mouth wasn't, "Cool, though we're cozy & safe here in our mansions, we are doing what little we can to help end this war so our boys can come home." It wasn't, "Wow! People actually still like us enough to buy our latest CD, '"Craptallica- A Fresh Load of Droppings for You!' & bring it to war with them!?" It was something along the lines of, "Well, since the army hasn't paid us for the use of our music, we didn't know a thing about it." I presume a lawsuit against the U.S. government will soon be announced from the Hettytallica's legal team. Oh, joy! They'll soon be rich enough they won't need to keep playing music to sustain their fortune!! (But they no doubt will continue, as the Hetty Green drive for more runs deep in their veins!) What cemented their victory was their steadfast refusal to lift a finger to aid someone who looked to them for help- The Raven's Heart Foundation.

It's disappointing, but not surprising that HGtallica would ignore a fundraiser that asks them to donate either themselves to the concert, or stuff they own to the fundraising auction, free of charge. This is of course, not the first time this band has turned their backallicas on their fans in need. Just ask Henry Rollins, organizer of the fundraiser and album for the West Memphis Three, which was an attempt to raise money for the legal defense & retrial of 3 metal head teens that were charged, tried & condemned, 1 to death & 2 to life imprisonments for a crime the evidence shows they didn't commit. There is in fact, some evidence that a relative of one of the victims probably is the guilty murderer. Yet when you're young, broke & railroaded, justice is nonexistent. Although Greedallica allowed HBO to include one of their songs on the documentary on the subject, Henry was unable to convince them to join this collaboration. Performing even one song on the benefit album would have done more for these kids than an incendiary documentary that just encourages helpless rage at the country's present joke of a justice system. I don't know how much cash those doomed kids spent on Miserallica merchandise before their witch hunt- like trial & incarceration. But I know their spending benefited Can'tbebotheredica as does the spending of every other sucker who continues to support the Nolongermetallica juggernaut.

Interestingly, James recently contributed a chapter to the fund raising book, "Last Pentacle of the Sun: Writings in Support of the West Memphis Three", which nearly put them in danger of losing this year's award. But, due to my kind nature, I kept them as the only candidates in the running. However, in honor of James actually making a contribution to something other than his own bank account, I bestowed James with a unique honor: I revised this article & took out every instance of substituting a dollar sign for the s in his name. Congrats, J! Don't lose hope Lar$, maybe sometime in the future you'll be able to regain your honor, if you ever had any, helping some other greedy, demanding, time wasting 'fan'!

I apologize for spending this entire article pointing out the putridly ugly omissions at this festival rather than focusing on the wonderful greatness this event encouraged & attracted. Please don't hold that against me; when roses grow on top of the septic tank, sometimes the stench of the septic tank is a little overwhelming even as you notice the pretty flowers. Time to smell the roses. On January 20 there was a massive, over 18 show of the best bands in metal- they are the best bands because they are setting aside their time, their greed, their legitimate money making opportunities elsewhere to help out a dying baby that none of them are related to, for no reason other than it's a benevolent thing to do. Raven's metal head parents sent out an internet call to the metal community, and though this is largely was ignored by the mainstream media, the who's who of metal responded to the call. One month almost to the day after helplessly watching his brother get murdered before his eyes, Vinnie Paul was on hand to show support, as was Charlie Benante & Scott Ian of Anthrax. Disturbed bought their own plane tickets from Chicago to play for this gig, and actions like those should be what this article was all about. Be sure to check out the Raven's heart site for the lengthy, impressive list of the many fine men of metal who turned out in droves to lend their talent to this worthy cause.

Now let's plunge back into the sewage. What makes this story so sad is that in spite of this couple's devotion to metal, their getting married & giving birth to their kids as Metallica tunes played, their naming two of their kids after Lar$ & James, in spite of them being arguably two of the reason for the Suetallica & Greedallica direction of the band in recent years, what's notable about the bands that played is the absence of you guessed it, the Hetty Greens of the music world! I assume they were way too busy that day to get away. Maybe that was their once a year laundry day, maybe they were too tied up with home health care of their kids to bother with someone else's problem. Maybe everything they own is so roach infested & filthy that they just couldn't, in good conscience, donate anything to anyone but their garbage collectors. All I know for sure is that Lar$ had a gay ol' time hanging out at Sundance movie fest with his significant other, the model. I think they were in hot pursuit of whatever it is that catches the fancy of teenagers these days. The pursuit of hedonism is a far more interesting one than doing some good deed for free for some baby that's too little to support them by buying their t- shirts, posters, tickets, CDs, and the like.

Enjoy your award! You guys earned it like no one else! Keep on in this fine tradition, and you might just win Hetty Green of the century!

Yeah, yeah, yeah, I know. Soon your lawyers will be in touch. I'll sit by my phone & wait for the call.  (Wow! What a great new thing to try out! Instead of alienating fans by suing them, you'll be suing alienated former fans! That's how to keep your
fortune growing!)

So right. Thanx for the additional info, ka-ching. I totally neglected to mention all the bands who donated stuff! Sorry, there was many more who couldn't be at the concert, yet donated really cool, personal stuff to be sold at the auction for Raven.

How does someone lose touch with what made them a success in the first place? If not for the tape trading back in the day, maybe Metallica doesn't make it as huge...yet they had no problem suing Napster for doing basically the same thing they previously advocated! I have no problem with thier celebrity, hell we gave it to them, served it up on a silver platter! I guess we all just figured that the guys would stay the same, and not be corrupted by the money, fame and power...yes POWER and you know what they say about how power corrupts. To not even allow themselves to be bothered with something like this is just mind blowing....and I know that they can't possibly be directly involved with every cause that makes its way to thier attention, but to have been personally contacted by organizers and to blatantly ignore it is just beyond comprehension to me. Hopefully all of thier money can keep them company and help to buy them an extension to thier 15 minutes when the time comes!

I happen to know the organizer of the benefit that was held for Raven. I also know, for a fact, he (Harry) had made dozens of attempts to get Metallica to contribute something. He contacted thier agent in New York, he called the management company (and, didn't even get a response), He spoke with one of Metallica's personal assistants (whom he'd known for many years, and grew up with)....? Mind you, maybe Harry just didn't give the band enough time to respond? HE TRIED FOR 2 MONTHS!? Not a word from them, a rep, NOTHING. Lars and Kirk were BOTH handed a PERSONAL email printed for them both to read...and they did read it. The email even explained that 2 of Raven's brothers were named after James and Lars. (That right there would have made me pick up the damn phone and THANK THE PARENTS). Anyway....A MEGA METAL BAND like IRON MAIDEN even stepped in. Harry called Nicko McBrain, Nicko's response was..."Mate, I'm comin' there, and we are going to raise money for this baby!". Iron Maiden guitarist Dave Murray, whom wasn't even contacted to participate, emailed Harry and said he was sorry he was commited on the day of the benefit....BUT, HE SENT AN AUTOGRAPHED GUITAR. Dave did this without even being asked for help. There were so many Rock Stars at the actual benefit, that they all didn't even get to get up and jam. BUT...THEY SHOWED UP, took photos with fans, signed autographs, spent thier own money at the bar, wrote checks to the foundation, and gave hope while Metallica sat there and did NOTHING. LAME, LAME, LAME! Sh1t? I know they have friends in L.A.. Why not mail a friend a check (they could write off on thier taxes), and have a buddy make an announcement at the benefit saying..."The guys in Metallica are sorry they couldn't attend because they are lazy....BUT, here is a check from them!!" How about this everyone....From now on, every time you see Metallica on TV, turn the channel. From now on, every time you have an option to purchase something they proffit from...DON'T BUY IT. From now on, IGNORE Metallica, the same way the IGNORED this baby girl who wouldn't need a benefit if her family didn't spend SO MUCH money on them before Raven was even born. The have been OFFICIALLY REMOVED from my wallet, and my life....starting....NOW.

Posted by cool guy:
That is a good idea but I am sure Lars would creep his way to the entrance and start charging to get in.

People should get Metallica to distribute more of their wealth, just not through the government, but rather private means. What we should all do is stand around in a circle around James Hetfield's mansion and sing together "We Are The World You Ungrateful Bastards!"

In my quest to see and read everything that there is about poop I came across a web page where you could actually send a box of poop to someone through the mail anonymously. They even had many different kinds of turds to chose from. Cat, dog, wet, or dry its all there for the sending.

I have 3 huge dogs & 5 cats, want me to start saving their special contributions?? (Ooops, sorry! The road just ate cat # 5, I'll send him along too, though his guts squished out through his ears. Maybe he'd like a trip west?)

I don't know if future Hettys will be bands. Anything might qualify, I'm following the AntiNews closesly. Greenie, I was thnking we could send them an empty envelope with, "Hetty Award inside!!" to demo that you get whatchu give, though a set mousetrap or powdered sugar in the envelope would be funnier. Too bad those are probably illegal.

im not saying i want more goverment involvment,as i know exactly what happens when goverment contracts are handed out,for instance,my father works for a construction company as mason(the fellow actually placing the blocks on top of each other)and the company charges something like 1 and half times what a job normally would cost if it werent on goverment property(of course the little people like my dad still get paid the same)i dont know about you,but i wouldnt feel comfortable with such goverment morons running my possible lifesaving decisons...then again maybe i would since they like spending like drunken sailors.but like ag has said, this needs to be taken to the boards.the real villans here arent the drug companies its metallica's aloofness.

Posted by aG:
it's obvious, they sue people so it costs money. To keep it short and sweet since this kind of discussion should really be on the politics board. 1) They raise the cost of insurance for doctors which gets passed over to clients. 2) Doctors and insurance companies are reluctant to perform certain procedures in fear of getting sued, thus cost for other health care measures rise to compensate. A) There are many cases where people are rushed to the emergency room and do not get the care they need right away because doctors are reluctant to take the risk, so far less experience interns or residents have to do the job. 38 percent of Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association doctors surveyed in the AMA 'liability crisis' States have refused to see emergency room patients. B) Doctors won't perform a lifesaving procedure in fear of liability if it doesn't work. According to the BCBS survey, 56% of doctors in those states are refusing some high-risk procedures due to litigation fears. This hits home because it happened to a family member who could have lived with the operation. 3) Lifesaving drugs are slow to market, even when they are working in other parts of the world because of reluctance to release them in the "sue happy" US market. Factor in liability set asides into your drug costs, the drug companies do. 4) Doctors are driven out of certain areas of medicine due to sue happy lawyers. Try to find a good obstetrics doctor in North Carolina. 31% of doctors surveyed in AMA crisis States are moving out of those States. Doctors are being forced to practice defensive medicine. 5) Again liability insurance. When lawyers go after another party, say an anesthesiologist, who had nothing to do with the actual medical mistake, it helps drive the price up for everyone. 6) Lawyers use bogus "junk science" experts at trials to sway jurors that do not know better. Oh yeah, the cost of malpractice in 2002 was $24 billion alone and rates for liability insurance rose on average between 15% to 20% between 2000 and 2002. Sure there should be some liability but lawyers are making millions with suits that should not be filed and abusing the system and driving the prices up for everyone. I'd be happy to continue this discussion on the politics board if that isn't enough for you. I'm interested to see how you think lawyers have nothing to do with it. It's just the greedy drug and insurance companies

Please explain, with concrete detail, how lawyers contribute to the rising costs of health care. And please don't just say "it's obvious, they sue people so it costs money." I want to see who can put their knowledge where their opinions are.

Each new drug on the market comes out after an estimated average of $800 million worth of research goes into it. That is the reason for expensive drugs. And since we're on the topic.... "Woed to yo' mutha!".

Posted by dolly d.:
Greenie, I did tell you Culture Crap was no good, but it hurt your feelings. I won't do that twice! aG, many excellent points, I forgot about trial lawyers! Some southern state, maybe one of the Carolinas? has no brain surgeons because they've been sued out of existence. Yup, big sugar daddy Unca Sam fo' sho' is also at the root of this. Why on earth anyone wants govt funded health care & prescrips just doesn't make sense to me, given the history of prices skyrocketing when they become involved. This important discussion has elevated this fluffy 'Metallica Sux' article into something actually useful & educational, I appreciate it!

Posted by Herr aG:
aG's quick take on the problems with US healthcare. 1) lawyers. Want one of the biggest contributors to the rising cost of healthcare? It's trial lawyers. 2) It started with the government. Before the government got involved as a provider of health care it wasn't ruinously expensive. See the free market (what the market will handle) works great when you don't have an entity involved that can handle higher costs. Once the government started paying the bills, the prices climbed. We have all heard about the $300 hammer. Same principle here. Hey we can charge $500 for this test and the government will pay it! With the government involved, the costs climbed and then other people that didn't qualify for assistance needed access to higher cost health care, enter the insurance companies. Same principle. They would pay the higher cost. It wasn't like the old days where the docs couldn't charge and arm and leg to fix your arm and your leg because people had to pay for this stuff out of pocket. Before the government and insurance companies got involved Docs used to live nice middleclass lifestyles, not megarich. Of course the trial lawyers are taking care of that problem. Finally, if you want another example of why healthcare and drugs cost so much in the US (aside from the insurance and government destroying the "what the market can handle" principal) just watch late night TV and watch for one of those wonderful Lawyer commercials. Did you ever take Drug XYZ, we're here to sue the ass off the company that made it. Go research this stuff, plenty of info online. Compare the cost of healthcare in the 50s then the 60s (when the government started getting heavily involved) to today. As for tort reform, plenty of info out there. Ask John Edwards. For a fun read, check out the fictional story "The King of Torts", not factual but a good insight into the problem with trial lawyers. Finally, let's get back to what this is all about, Baby Raven. I for one can't believe that Metallica couldn't be bothered to at least send a signed guitar or something. I mean James is always touting his endorsement deals, it would have only cost him postage. Guess Sundance was too much on their minds.

Ehhhh... I don't know, Greenie. I realize that I'm believed to be a card-carrying member of the VRWC--- but I think EVERYBODY can agree to the following: "government regulation" might as well mean the same thing as "increase in price, increase in paperwork, decrease in quality". As soon as the private sector hears "government contract"--- you know damn well what follows. For the same reasons that Dolly Doppleganger must be kept seperate from her other half, so must goverment and industry be kept as mutually exclusive as reason will allow.

Posted by GREENMUSE:
you are correct in it being the drug execs decisions, but when those same execs are in bed with the goverment prices are kept high, with consequences be damned.and it aint the extensive fda processing fees to keep us safe that justifies these prices.you can disagree with my healthcare veiws, but boy george's coolness is undeniable. lets let boy george be the unifing factor between the right and left in the usa, cmon listen to"do you really want to hurt me"and tell me that crap isnt good.

Posted by dolly d.:
High drug prices the gvt's fault, not the 'price it as high as the market will bear' drug co exec. decisions? I don't know, Greenie. Sorry about the Boy George slam, had no idea you loved him so. Sorry too, DS, I'll buy you both their "greatest hits" CDs when they come out.

Posted by GREENMUSE:
dont lump culture club in with that crap!boy george rocks.i used to like dolly before she went all conservative on me.i just cant get on well with "those"people.though in all seriousness, the goverment does dabble in healthcare, why are drug prices so high?

You are close to being right on your other two amusing points, as well, nice try! Do I suggest they share their wealth? No, that would be your liberal position, quick to vote for a 50% tax rate. I merely gave them an award for doing absolutely nothing. They didn't make an appearance, they didn't donate any of the swag given to them for free, I could go on & on about all they refused to do, but I've already done that, see above.

I'm still trying to figure out what Censorcism is. I think that the band should be required to sit in a room for 72 hours listening to their first four albums before being allowed to record again. And Bob Rock should not be allowed anywhere near them. Cliff would spit on this crap they are trying to call Metallica. It's sad to see what happened to this once great band. MTV corrupts.

5vs.1, rest assured that if the gov't ever meddles in health care, we'll enjoy being taxed at 50% just like Canada. Good job spouting liberal, 'tow the line' cliches, though. There's not quite enough of that going around these days.
