I've got nothing against stage names in concept, some can be pretty clever, but there are others that borderline on being out and out stupid. Rap artists seem the most likely to use stupid stage names, but there are plenty others out there to choose from. Below are my top 5 picks, I'm sure you have a few of your own to add to the list. (some of you might take a shot at my penn name too and that's ok, have at it)

5) Prince in his "Artist formerly known as" era aka the unpronounceable symbol.

4) Blackie Lawless (W.A.S.P.) Even though the name fits him, it is still pretty cheesy.

3) Kid Rock - So it's rock for little kids?

2) Shifty Shellshok (Crazy Town) - Maybe if this name was used by someone we could take seriously, it might work.

To the ones earlier who obviously have no education in this department i would like to clear a few things. Firstly Eminem isnt symbolising he is black on the inside however the initials of his birth name M&M (Marshall Mathers), Marilyn Manson chose his out of respect for Marilyn Monroe and detest for Charlie Manson, Snow was actually Snow man and to anyone laughing at white rappers in general, u just jelous, what they have a talent so what? u dont obviously the fact that eminem is the highest selling rap artist of our time. remember that. he gets more airplay then N'SYNC and all your metal bands.

Mercury: you did a good job retorting to NSync Forever's arguement about MTV the station. But you left out a retort on the music on MTV. The reason I don't like MTV is because it has nothing to do with music anymore. You're damn right that metal was just as popular as boy bands are today. BUT THEY WERE MUSICIANS!! They played instruments and performed live at concerts. They were original, both in comparing them to other bands and in the sounds of their songs. Forever does make a good point about us complaining about our bands selling out. See my comments elsewhere. I think it's funny that it's impossible for boy bands to sell out though. Why? Cuz they have nothing to sell out. No integrity. No originality. No musicality. No meaning. No intelligence. Anyone can sing about teenage girls falling in "love". "Tears in Heaven" is about Eric Clapton's dead daughter. "Aqualung" examines the difference between God and Religion. "The Trees" is a beautiful and deep social commentary. Granted, these weren't on MTV, (Clapton maybe, Tull and Rush were too early) but IT'S INTELLIGENT MUSIC WITH SOMETHING TO SAY. You said that a TV station that requires "No thinking" is a good thing. OH MY GOD!! Some of us have graduated high school and college and realize that what is popular is not always right. The heroes in society are those who challenge the status quo, who realize that things aren't right and try to make them better instead of just going with everyone else. I'm begging you to please open your mind NSync Forever. We don't "watch MTV while we complain". Just because all the people you associate with do watch it doesn't mean that everyone does. Nor are we the extremist, black clothes wearing, zit faced, kid shooting, high schoolers you seem to take us for. Open your eyes. There's more to the world than MTV shows you. What it is the expectations of quality entertainment has gone right down the preverbial drain. Nobody expects to find anything worthwhile on MTV anymore, so anything that comes even close is viewed as good. Same with the music biz....which is why bands like N'Sync are so popular today.

Ok, Limp, I think you're confused about the difference between stage names and BAND NAMES. If you have a band, you generally have to name it SOMETHING. I guess didn't want to be very original, you could name it after yourself, like Dave Matthews Band or something(no offense against them, I needed an example)but bands genenerally have a name. A stage name's totally different. A stage name is what a single person, usually rappers, call themselves. They COULD just used their regular name, but they don't. It's different from naming your band. I don't know, I guess they think it's cool or something, I really could care less, that's their deal. Just thought I'd state the difference. And as for Tool, the meaning of their name has nothing to do with dicks.

You are all a bunch of idiots, you sit and complain about MTV 24/7 but you all know its awesome. You bitch and cry about how MTV never plays the bands that you like, because you know about a secret underground band that no one else knows about. But then, one day, if they do get on MTV, you scream and cry about how they sold out, and how you liked them when they were cool, and how you hate them now because they are popular. Then you say how mtv used to be good when it first started and how its so much different now. Let me clear something up, MTV is just as good if not better than it used to be. In the 80s, mtv played lots of metal and had things like headbangers ball right? but that's because that stuff was as popular as the boy bands of today, its not like back then they liked more underground stuff, twisted sister and Motley Crüe graced just as many t-shirts and probably more trading cards and posters than each Backstreet Boy combined but we like to pretend that they were underground then and MTV used to play that stuff cause they were cooler. Also, MTV had just as many filler shows give or take back then, MTV never really played straight videos without chatter because chatter=endorsements=ads. You cant make money by just playing videos. On the topic of money, if you are wondering why you aren't seeing your favorite local band on TRL and all over MTV it is because they lack the necessary funds. They would most likely rather spend the money it would cost to make a video and launch an add campaign on gas money to drive to the shows which they entertain you with. I know how easy it is to complain about something like MTV, but you are most likely watching it while you complain, and you owe them because if there is a channel that you can turn on at any time of the day and just waste a few hours with, its MTV. No thinking, nothing boring, even the commercials are filled with pop stars. Lets face it, MTV is a good thing, maybe its not just what you want, but how many of us get a channel crafted specifically for what we want to see and only what we want to see? The closest TV has come to that with is the playboy channel but even that only comes in after 10:00. Oh well, that's life.

Just when we all thought Puff Daddy couldn't get any stupider - he did. P Diddy? When I first heard this I even said to myself "why doesn't he just keep calling himself Puff Daddy since that's not too bad of a name?" Then I stopped and thought "did I just say to myself that Puff Daddy wasn't too bad of a name?" Damn, maybe there's some radiation in the air where I live that causes brain tumors which no one has found out about yet.

I actually kind of get a kick out of Will Smith......but his original incarnation "DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince" was pretty wicked lame. Also, once again, I enjoy Ice-T but how did somebody who once referred to himself as the O.G. (Original Gangster) get away with naming himself after a refreshing, sweet drink? Strange. How about 'The Edge' from U2? Really irritating. But even MORE irritating in that band is a lead singer with, at first, a suspect voice caling himself Bono Vox, which translates to Good Voice. Nothing like a little humbleness, eh? Doesn't Slipsuck go by numbers instead of names or something, too. Damn, won't they just go away?!
