Weeks Top 5
I normally pick humorous subjects for
the Top 5, but with the dawn of the second century of Rock I have had some
grave reflections concerning the direction music seems to be heading in.
Therefore, I thought it incumbent that I layout my biggest fear for Rock
and suggest five ways that it might be stopped.
I fear that if Rock continues
on the road that it is on, it will be dead as we know it before too long.
As record companies take less chances and only sign artist who are "sure
things" the creativity of rock may dry up. I certainly don't want to see
this happen so here are my Top 5 suggestions of how to stop Rock from becoming
extinct.
Top
5 ways to save Rock from extinction
5. Turn off MTV. Once a vehicle for exploring
up and coming artist and their music, MTV has turned into the poster child
for commercialism gone haywire. Besides they hardly show any music these
days.
4. Don't listen to Top 40 radio. One of
the biggest scams in the music industry is Top 40 Radio. The big record
companies pay indy promoters to get songs added to Top 40 play list. He
with the most money gets the biggest hits.
3. Discover new bands online. Five of my
10 favorite bands I discovered on the net. You won't find them on MTV or
on top 40 radio, but their music is a lot better than most you will find
in the mainstream.
2. Think for yourselves. Don't let trends
dictate what music you listen to or what CD's you buy. Listen to what you
enjoy, not what your friends or the media think is "cool". Rip the wheels
off the band wagon!
1.
Support Indy artist and Labels. It is the Independents that are giving
us the best new music these days. While the big labels are busy filling
the airwaves with the "latest thing" packaged as 20 different bands. Independent
labels are releasing albums from all kinds of artist. No matter what kind
of music you are into some of the best new bands can be found on Indy labels.
Ok that's it. I will return
the normal humorous nature of the Top 5 next time. Happy New Year everyone!
