Elvis fans always have a reason to party. All of 2010 was spent celebrating the 75th anniversary of Presley's birth and now, on the 35th anniversary of his August 16, 1977 death, this week has been proclaimed Elvis Week and a special time to remember The King. To that end, here are a few new ways to celebrate Presley's life and legacy: A new compilation CD, a book and an interesting Elvis opportunity for travelers. I Am an Elvis Fan Were you one of the people who helped pick the tracks for this 21-song collection? A quarter of a million votes were cast on line and those votes determined what cuts made it onto this first-ever U.S. fan-voted Elvis album. So it's the real popular stuff that you'll find here: rockers like "All Shook Up," Don't Be Cruel" and "Jailhouse Rock," mellow numbers like "I Can't Help Falling in Love" and "Always on My Mind" and gospel faves like "(There'll Be) Peace in the Valley (For Me)" and "How Great Thou Art." The fans picked a few live tracks for inclusion too including "Burning Love" and a take on (the already included as a studio cut) "Suspicious Minds."
This book relates the story of Presley's life in Memphis from the time he moved there in 1949 through to his death in 1977 and is indispensable for those who intend to make an Elvis pilgrimage to the city. Everybody knows about Graceland but Bernardo gives the addresses of eight prior Presley homes and one of them still stands. Other still extant Elvis venues include Sun Records Studios where the King cut his early sides, the Peabody Hotel where his high school prom was held, Ellis Auditorium, the site of his first show and the Master Kang Rhee Institute where Elvis trained in the martial arts. In all Bernardo maps out about 50 Elvis-related Memphis sites as he retells the Presley story.
