Duke Robillard and Sunny Crownover - Tales from the Tiki Lounge
.
It doesn't take long to realize that Tales from the Tiki Lounge is about pure sounds. From the beginning of "Bye Bye Blues," Duke Robillard produces some of the cleanest guitar sounds you can hear on his Les Paul. Pair that with the pure vocals of Sunny Crownover, and what you have is a winning combination.Sunny Crownover easily moves from Mae West's "Occidental Woman" to "Crazy" by Willie Nelson. And along the way, she gives incredible renditions of "Besame Mucho" and "Sway." It's easy to imagine some of these songs ("Tico Tico" and "Kiss of Fire") as part of a burlesque routine in some dark room with a background of velvet curtains. Really, there isn't a whole lot to be said about this album. It is safe to say that you won't hear many albums like this in the near future. Writing the review for this album is easy because the formula is pretty simple. Take a remarkable guitarist, add a remarkable vocalist and a list of jazzy, loungy tunes dedicated to the memory of Les Paul, and what you've got is an album that you'll want to listen to repeatedly.
