Crazy Lixx - New Religion

by J. Simpson

.
April 6th marked the U.S. release date of the sophomore album from Sweden's own rockers Crazy Lixx. The disc, titled New Religion was released in March throughout Europe and has been getting fairly high praise for the contribution the music has made to a movement in the Swedish music scene of hairband style sleeze rock.

New Religion consists of 10 glam rock tunes, the essential power ballad and a very short acoustic instrumental. There's no use in picking out which songs are weaker than the others because all the songs on the disc are well written and produced with no real fillers or duds(except maybe that acoustic thingy I spoke of). The tunes showcase good catchy guitar riffs and vocals that seem to emit Americas 80's/early 90's rock scene. Think Skid Row, Motley Crue or Bon Jovi when comparing to Crazy Lixx. The groups current lineup includes Danny Rexon on vocals, Andy Dawson handles the guitar work, Luke Rivano has bass and Joey Cirera with drums.

All in all this a very tight album and it sounds like it's doing pretty well in Europe BUT(yea the dreaded but) as I stated before, from the production to the music itself, it was all done before over 20 years ago and having lived through that era the music doesn't do anything for me, I've left that music in the past. Now that I've got that off my chest, I have to give the guys in Crazy Lixx some credit because they have made a good, maybe even great album depending on which decade and part of the world you're coming from. I'll go out on a limb and predict the disc does much better overseas than here in the States just because America has already burnt through this type of music many years back. BUT(yes another but) some people say eventually everything comes around full circle so maybe Crazy Lixx is exactly in the right place at exactly the right time. We shall see, I wish them all the luck.
