The Behind the Player DVD series features exclusive interviews, jam sessions and lessons with some of the most popular and celebrated guitarists in rock and roll. This recent volume features iconic KISS guitarist Ace Frehley. Ace sits down for an interview about his time with KISS through his solo albums, all the way up to his latest, Anomaly. In the past, he may have taken the opportunity to stick it to the other guys in KISS, but Ace keeps it respectful. The DVD isn't about dishing the dirt; it's about guitars – gear, songwriting, technique and style.
In that respect, this is definitely a guitar player's DVD. Ace covers his setup extensively, giving tips and demonstrations on his signature sound. He goes into great depth with lessons on Cold Gin and Shock Me. The lessons are not for beginners. Ace runs through the songs quickly. The DVD comes with video tablature – similar to Guitar Hero, but not a stupid video game.
Frehley jams the two songs with guests John 5, Matt Sorum, Tommy Clufetos, George Lynch, Scot Coogan and Chris Wyse. That cast of characters also takes turns talking about how Frehley influenced them and their bands.
A few special features include Frehley talking about Anomaly, a performance of Pain in the Neck and a trio of vintage, live Ace solos.
Other DVDs in the series include John 5, Tim Skold, Duff McKagan, Blasko, Stephen Perkins and more.
