When I first heard the name The Waylons, my interest was piqued. The band members admit that they needed a name for their first gig and thought calling the band after a person's name would be a good idea. Waylon just happens to be my son's name. That being said, when I heard the name The Waylons, I expected a band with a heavy dose of twang, maybe an alt-country band. That is not the case. In fact, on the band's website, Sean Leadem, who had been playing drums in a country band, explains that he wanted to return to playing guitar and get away from playing country. Out of Love opens with a song called "Lying in the Sun."
The vocals, the harmonies, in fact the whole orchestration of the song reminds me of Creeper Lagoon. It's a richly textured song and it is a good indicator of what is to come on the album. "Endless Supplies" if anything is more richly textured with layers of guitar, strings, and vocals, particularly at the end of the song. Something about this band (I'd say mostly the bass and vocals in "Rachel") reminds me of Preston Furman from Columbus, Ohio.
Each song on this EP is very well-crafted and well-executed. The harmony vocals are the perfect compliment to the lead and the instrumentation is complex without being avant-garde. If you are one of those people who feels that it is hard to find good indie rock bands, perhaps you are just not looking in the right place. The Waylons is a band with a refreshing sound. This 7-song EP is a good introduction to a very solid band.
