The Dead Weather - Horehound

In the beginning of rock, all-star musicians have always collaborated outside of their established bands. Labeled as supergroups – more as a marketing ploy than anything else – these bands might stick around for an album or two. Ego eventually busts them up. The best supergroups form organically, the worst might as well be cooked up in a marketing meeting. The Dead Weather is our newest supergroup. A combination of the talents of vocalist Alison Mosshart (The Kills), bassist Jack Lawrence (The Raconteurs), guitarist Dean Fertita (Queens of the Stone Age) and a drummer/producer in Jack White. The band and this record came together in a few, short months. White produces the record with the same anti-technology commitment that influences his other bands. The lo-tech, rock band playing in a room approach is not going to get old. At least when done right. Doing it right depends on the songs and the performances. Tracks like "Cut Like a Buffalo" and "Treat Me Like Your Mother" are blasts of rock and roll with a texture you can feel through the speakers. Like being hit with a hammer wrapped in sandpaper. It feels so good.
