Silversun Pickups - Swoon

by J. Simpson

.
Swoon is the name of the sophomore release by L.A.'s own Silversun Pickups. The disc was released on April 14th by the same indie label that released their first album, Dangerbird Records.

The disc picks right up where Caranavas left off. It consists of 10 original tracks produced by Dave Cooley and mixed by Tony Hoffer with the band getting credit for writing all the songs. The sound of the disc in whole has a lot of the same characteristics as the previous release, with the static like guitar driven riffs, and a spaced out Smashing Pumpkins vibe. Yes you can't help but compare the Pickups to the Pumpkins mainly due to the vocal styles of the 2 singers but as I listened to them both while reviewing this disc, I find Corigan's vocals much more nasal and Brian Aubert's more feminine sounding. Not that's there's anything wrong with that, it's just what caught my ear while comparing the two. My favorite tracks off the disc happen to be the 3 hardest tunes, "The Royal We," "Sort Of" and "Panic Switch" which is already getting plenty of radio play. All the slower and mid tempo songs seem to get lost and blend together. Nothing to grab a hold of that makes you remember them.

Bottom line is, I'm not sure if the Pickups progressed from their first disc or are just treading water. I see no big changes in song structure, song writing or sound in general. No real experimentation. In the end I think the Pickups could put all of the songs from their first & second albums together and it could just be a 21 track disc. At least that's the conclusion I personally came to.
