Paper Route - Are We All Forgotten
by Dan MacIntosh
.
The cover of Paper Route's Are We All Forgotten EP is either the brightest sunrise ever witnessed by human eye, or a fireball about to leave a poor farm town in ashes. And like these blinding images, the pretty, synth-pop inspired sounds contained within are like a beautiful wedding photo – albeit, one (perhaps) about to be dropped in the fireplace. Title track, "Are We All Forgotten", features the desperate chorus of: "Don't break my heart/Again." These aren't silly love song lyrics, either. Instead, it's is a sincere plea for one partner to be good. Later, with "You Kill Me", unfortunately, the listener is left feeling like this relationship has not been fixed peacefully. The disc then ends with "Waiting for the Final Leaf to fall", which is a dirge suggesting bells tolling on this fading pairing, probably for the last time. There is a little (tiny?) beauty mixed into this mess, exemplified by the lovely synth washes of "American Clouds". But it's a brief moment of bliss on an otherwise tragic soap opera of a CD. Paper Route is such an innocent name; one that conjures up visions of red-headed, freckle-faced boys joyously delivering local newspapers. But the only thing brought to your doorstep by this brief edition, is pain.
