Although you can purchase this sampler for a few bucks its primary purpose is not to make money. Mohawk Bomb puts these compilations out pretty much as a service to the (mostly) unsigned and unheralded bands that contribute to them and many of the CDs that are produced go straight to the music press. There is no theme, no rhyme or reason behind the fourteen cuts contained on Vol. 2; you could come up with the same variety and the same quality of music simply by checking out bands at random on their MySpace pages. The hope is that the relatively small amount of exposure garnered by each participating act will propel them to bigger and better things and that maybe one or two acts will go on to much bigger things. Will it be 900 Pound Gorilla with their speedy, NOFX-like take on "Big Fat Limo" or Keira Verlee and Ellie Rose, otherwise known as VerleeRose, with their thoughtful acoustic music? Ska fans might like to root for Offshore Riot who skank it up with "Wanton Soup" while emo lovers may go nuts for "Barfly" by Drew Street Mary; the band's singer sounds oddly enough like he could be related to Jackson Browne. It's actually the ladies that put in the best performances here; Tish Meeks puts her gravelly voice to good use on the psychobilly romp "American Breakdown" by 3 Kisses, Trisha Hanudel tunes into old school punk on Bull Lee's "Fairfax Ave." and Jacqueline of Black Diamond Love brings a female touch to the Hendrix sound on "Teacher Preacher." It's tough to rave about this type of "anything goes" sampler as a whole but the persevering listener should find at least a few tunes to get behind.
