Laurie Morvan Band - Fire It Up
.
You don't even have to hear the CD to know what Laurie Morvan is all about. She has one song titled "Nothin' but the Blues" and another one called "I Speak the Blues." So, yes, you will get a healthy dose of blues rock on Fire It Up! And make no mistake, Laurie Morvan knows what to do with the axe in her hands. Even on slow jams like "Lay Your Hands," she lets you know just what she can do with a guitar solo. On this CD, Laurie Morvan makes the point more than once that she is unusual. Not that she is strange or anything like that. But there aren't too many female blues guitar players. In "Livin' in a Man's World," Morvan preaches that some people don't want her to play. But that doesn't matter because she loves her life as a guitar-playing girl. She also says she's been treated in ways a man could never dream of. All I can say to these people who don't want to let her play is, "Have you heard her play?" This woman plays some hot blues rock, and if you doubt her prowess at all, just listen to this tune.Another way that she is unusual is that she is a "skinny chick." That in itself is not unusual, but Morvan makes the point that blues men love to sing about big-legged women. While she has no beef with the full-figured gals, she just doesn't want the guys to forget about the skinny chicks. This album is not only a good introduction to the musical talents of Laurie Morvan, but also good evidence of why she was chosen to play the Long Beach Blues Festival earlier this year. She has incredible chops with a guitar and a soulful voice. If you're tempted to say "She's pretty good...for a chick," let me stop you. She's pretty good. Period. If you are looking for some good blues licks, check out Fire It Up!
