Greg Koons and the Misbegotten - Welcome to the Nowhere Motel

.
My first impression of Greg Koons is that he reminds me of an Indiana singer-songwriter named Pat Anderson. The simple honesty of "Nowhere to Them, Somewhere to Me" reminds me a lot of "Wide Open Lonely" by Pat Anderson. Koons is all about simple, melodic, and rootsy songs.

He also shows that he can sing about some gritty themes, like Tom Waits and Bruce Springsteen. The best example of this is "By the Light of a Truck Stop Moon," in which Koons sings about a woman who used to be a hooker (and who suffered various abuses) but isn't anymore.

Koons has some very good stories in his songs, like "A Picture of My Pa before He Died in Vietnam" and "The Only Girl in Austin." The latter is a song filled with heartache because the narrator found the only girl in Austin who reminds him of an ex.

My favorite song on the album is "Los Angeles Looks Prettier on TV." Truer words have never been spoken. Television shows always make LA look better than it does in real life.

Koons is a talented songwriter who delivers is tunes in a really simple melodic style. If you like rootsy songs with familiar themes, Koons is an artist you should check out.
