Final Gravity - Final Gravity

This L.A.-based group loves beer so much that they named their band after a term used in brewing. So much that they compare their four members to the four ingredients in beer---drummer John Chominsky is water, guitarist Mike Clark is hops, bassist Charles Mumford is malt and singer Bill Moore is the yeast that makes it all happen. This of course is all in good fun and of little consequence unless you're sharing a brew with the boys. It does give an indication of what type of music the band plays though; not sloppy drinking tunes but the genre's loftier cousin, stoner rock. To be more specific Final Gravity has a deep respect for classic rock and especially for prog-rockers Rush. You can go right down the set list and call off the influences; in "Parallel Lives" you'll hear Metallica, "Line 'em Up" gives a nod to Kiss and "Bottle of Love" recalls the Cult. But it always comes back to Rush in one way or another. Some songs pay homage to the Canadian power trio subtly---if you're familiar with how Death Cab for Cutie has patterned songs like "Meet Me on the Equinox" after the Rush prototype then you know what I mean. Think of that but with a bit of a heavier bottom end and you have the thread that runs through all of Final Gravity. And some songs, like "Lab Rats," are flat-out cops of the Rush style. A few listeners might cry "rip-off" over this band's style but the fact is that their mash-up sounds great. After a few microbrews you can even say it sounds refreshing.
