Booker T - Potato Hole

by Gary Schwind

.
When I heard that Booker T had recorded an album with Drive-By Truckers, I couldn't wait to hear it. It didn't take long for me to realize that my anticipation was warranted.

From the first notes of "Pound it Out", you are immersed in the trademark organ sound of Booker T. And accompanying that is the three-axe attack of DBT. Now, even though I am fans of both artists, I probably wouldn't have thought to put the two of them together. That being said, it is a flawless blend, and it's a shame no one thought of it earlier.

The combination itself isn't the only unexpected thing about the album. Try this on for size. On this album Booker T and DBT have recorded an instrumental version of "Hey Ya." Yes, that's right. Booker T, who has played with giants of music like Steve Cropper and Donald "Duck" Dunn recorded a version of a Black Eyed Peas song. Bet you didn't see that one coming. Neither did I.

But wait! There's more! This collaboration also performs a version of Tom Waits's "Get Behind the Mule." That's range: covering BEP and Tom Waits on the same album. And you know something? Both of these covers are awesome! But then, you might have been able to guess that.

Potato Hole is fully Booker T. It is full of the groovy organ sounds on which he has built a splendid career. I would say that it is fully DBT at the same time, but that is a little misleading, simply because there are no vocals. However, the guitar sound is unmistakably DBT, particularly in "Pound it Out and "Warped Sister."

So if you are a fan of either of these tremendous artists, you will not be disappointed with this album. It is everything that is great about both of them. Oh, and do yourself a favor. When you play this album, crank the volume...and just groove.
