Thinking Aloud - Trash to Treasure Review
by Patrick Muldowney
.
Thinking Aloud can write a great song and support it with a solid album. This is pretty much the same formula that has helped Bad Religion's career span decades. The great song is "Romance", which has the makeup of a rock anthem. Like "Everlong", the immediate draw is the guitar tone, which is inviting, yet murky and opaque. Rock is not supposed to be innocent, but it is supposed to lure the ear, which "Romance" achieves well. "Bad decisions they feel good" is the best line on the album, perfectly capturing how the greatest magnetism is often found in the gutters and alleys of life. Trash to Treasure is not only similar to Bad Religion in structure, but also in sound. Mark Lira (other than "Romance") often sounds like Greg Graffin in tone and delivery, although he tends toward strain more often, which results in a stronger approach to Rock. "This is Done" is even an Armenian accent away from evoking comparisons to SOAD, though the bass breakdown is pure Krist Novoselic. Thinking Aloud, given the right opportunity, could attain national recognition because their tunes can be appreciated by Rock, Punk, and possibly even Metal crowds. Tracks added to iPod: Romance, All In Your Head, This is Done
